Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Because this person died in the year 269 AD, many details of his life have no doubt become more legendary than historical. However, he was an Italian bishop who, while under arrest, cured a judge's daughter of her blindness. Unfortunately, on February 14, 269 he was clubbed to death and beheaded. What is the Latin form of his name?

Answer: Valentinus

St. Valentine was martyred under the reign of, and at the direction of, Roman Emperor Claudius II, otherwise known as Claudius Gothicus, who only ruled from 268 to 270. Valentine lived at a time when Christianity was still being persecuted in the Roman Empire. Not until Emperor Constantine issued the Edict of Milan in 313 did Christianity become legal.
2. Speaking of Roman emperors, there are several who qualify for this quiz. Let's take the one who closely preceded Claudius Gothicus (who ordered the killing of St. Valentine), with only Gallenius to separate them. Who was the only Roman emperor to die after being captured by a foreign power, in this case, the Persians?

Answer: Valerian

Of the more than 80 Roman emperors from Caesar Augustus to Romulus Augustulus, eight were killed by the Praetorian Guard, and seven died in battle. At least 23 more were assassinated, half a dozen or so are confirmed as committing suicide, and 27 died from natural causes, including two by the plague and another by lightning. That leaves around nine or ten whose cause of death is still not clearly known.
3. Another Val person in the political arena is our next subject. Born in Iran in 1956, she has been a Senior Advisor to the President in the Obama Administration.

Answer: Valerie Jarrett

In 2008 Jarrett was selected as assistant to the president for intergovernmental relations. Before joining the Obama Administration, she had served as Chairman of the Chicago Stock Exchange, as well as being a trustee for the University of Chicago and the Museum of Science and Industry.
4. Our next Val person is another of the younger persons in the quiz, having been born in 1978. She has been called "one of the top 100 inspiring women in the world" by "The Guardian" and the "poster girl for third-wave feminism" by Salon. She founded the "Feministing" blog in 2004 and wrote "Full Frontal Feminism". Who is this American blogger?

Answer: Jessica Valenti

Valenti also authored "Why Have Kids?" and "The Purity Myth". In 2011 she received the Hillman Journalism Prize. The Prize is given by the Sidney Hillman Foundation and is awarded in order to give recognition to journalists and writers, as well as other public persons who "pursue social justice and public policy for the common good."
5. Val people love sports. Do you know which Val person won the High Jump in the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, setting a new Olympic record of 2.18 meters or 7 feet 1 inch? Name this Russian athlete.

Answer: Valeriy Brumel

During his career, Brumel broke the world record for the high jump six times. Valeriev, a Bulgarian, and Valkov, a Russian, are both professional soccer players. Yudashkin is a Russian artist and is called "Russia's most famous fashion designer" by the website Russiapedia.
6. Another athletic Val caused quite a stir in major-league baseball as a 20-year-old rookie pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1981. Who was this 18-year veteran from Mexico whose career included a no-hitter in 1990?

Answer: Fernando Valenzuela

Valenzuela was the first player in major league history to win the Rookie of the Year Award and the Cy Young Award in the same season. He opened his career with eight consecutive wins and added the Silver Slugger Award and a World Series Championship at the end of the season. All of the other choices were also major league players.
7. Val people can be very entertaining. I'm sure everyone knows of the great Italian-born actor and star of "The Sheik", who was known as the "Great Lover". Who was this icon who died at the age of 31 and for whose funeral an estimated 100,000 people lined up for 11 blocks in New York City?

Answer: Rudolph Valentino

Arriving as an 18-year-old in the US, Valentino at first worked as a gardener and as a dishwasher, as well as a dancer in vaudeville before his break on the silent screen in "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" in 1921.
8. There are several Valeries acting in the movies and on TV. Which actress called Valerie became firmly established on the small screen at the age of 15 in the role of Barbara Cooper on "One Day at a Time"?

Answer: Valerie Bertinelli

Bertinelli has made appearances in over 40 different television programs, including lead roles in "One Day at a Time", "Touched by an Angel", and "Hot in Cleveland". She received Golden Globes for Best Supporting Actress in 1981 and 1982.
9. Our next Val person, I'm sure, made an impression on me for his art work on fantasy paperbacks, such as "Tarzan" and "Doc Savage" I used to devour as a kid in the Sixties. Born in Peru, he emigrated to the US in 1964. Do you know who this fantasy artist is?

Answer: Boris Vallejo

In 1979 Vallejo received the British Fantasy Award for best artist. He has a dozen books of his art or his combined with that of his wife, Julie Bell, also a talented fantasy artist.

Valya Boutenko is a film maker, author, chef, and gardener.

Arturo Valo is my invention, but Valeriano Weyler was the Captain-General of Cuba prior to the Spanish-American War.
10. Our last Val person was one of the victims of the "Day the Music Died" plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, in 1959. Only 17 years old, who was the third singer on the plane along with The Big Bopper and Buddy Holly?

Answer: Ritchie Valens

"La Bamba" was Valens' biggest hit. Other big Valens recordings were "Donna" and "Come On, Let's Go".

Prior to the flight, Valens and Tommy Allsup flipped a coin to see who would take the plane and who would ride a bus that had been charted. In another ironic twist, Waylon Jennings gave up his seat of the fatal flight to J.P. Richardson ("The Big Bopper") because the latter was not feeling well.
