Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines. With consistency a great soul has simply nothing to do.' Who wrote this?

Answer: Emerson

Emerson the Transcendentalist, American to the core. Consistency is not a bad thing, per se, but a 'foolish' consistency certainly is not an attribute to be desired according to the venerable philosopher.
2. 'Greetings, we win.' Who said this before dropping dead?

Answer: Pheidippides

The Athenians courier Pheidippides ran the distance from Marathon to Athens to deliver this information to his commander. It is important to note that this was not his first race...he also had run four times back and forth from Sparta to Athens!
3. What Chinese poet said, 'Long a prisoner in a cage, I am now able to come back to nature'?

Answer: Tao Qian

His cage was bureaucratic duty, which he withdrew from to make more time for drink and poetry. Tao Qian, also called Tao Yuanming, was the most famous Chinese nature poet of all time. He wrote during the five-dynasties period, between the great Han and Tang empires.
4. Who said, 'We are not interested in the possiblilites of defeat; they do not exist'?

Answer: Queen Victoria

19th century English Queen Victoria was confident, we must give her that. She also had a fondness for refering to herself in the first person plural. We approve of that!
5. 'Silence is the virtue of fools.' Who wrote this?

Answer: Francis Bacon

Bacon, a 16th-17th century English bureaucrat and philosopher, was never one to mince words. Grandiloquent to the end, he was also an apparent advocate of the verbose, confounding those who swear by the old adage that 'silence is golden'.
