Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How old was Maria Anna of Bavaria when she was betrothed to Louis le Grand Dauphin of France?

Answer: Eight years

At the age of eight Maria Anna became betrothed to Louis who was seven years of age. Maria Anna was then carefully educated for her future role as Dauphine of France.
2. Who chose Philip V's wife for him?

Answer: Louis XIV of France

In November 1701 the almost 18 year old Philip married 13-year-old Maria Luisa of Savoy, as chosen by his grandfather Louis XIV. They had four sons, two of whom were King Louis I and King Ferdinand VI.
3. Where did Elisabeth consider impossible as a country of nationality for Charles III's bride?

Answer: Austria

It was impossible due to the homeland of the bride to be for the King. Elisabeth Farnese, mother of Charles III, considered it impossible to choose a bride from Austria so she chose a bride from Poland.
4. How closely related were Charles IV and Maria Louisa?

Answer: First cousins

Charles IV of Spain and his first cousin Maria Louisa of Parma were related via Louis the Grand Dauphin.
5. How many times was Ferdinand VII married?

Answer: Three

In 1802 Ferdinand married his first wife Maria Antonietta of the Two Sicilies and had two children, one whom died after a few months and a stillborn, which resulted in Maria Antonietta's death. His second wife Maria Josepha of Saxony never gave him any children.
His third and final wife Maria Christina of the Two Sicilies gave him two daughters, one of whom later became Isabella II and the other was posthumously born when Ferdinand VII died.
6. Who else got married on the same day as Isabella II?

Answer: Her sister

The marriages of Isabella II and her sister Luisa Fernanda suited France and King Louis Philippe who as a result bitterly quarreled with Britain.
Isabella married Francisco de Asis de Borbon having nine children of whom only five reached adulthood. Due to Isabella's obvious affairs and the rumor of Francisco being a homosexual it is likely that few if any of the children were his.
Luisa married Antoine Duke of Montpensier also having nine children only five of whom reached adulthood. Like her sister, Luisa and her husband were not happy while they were married.
7. How soon did Queen Maria de las Mercedes die after marrying Alfonso XII?

Answer: Six months

Alfonso married his first cousin Maria de las Mercedes, niece of Isabella II, who died six months after the marriage. He later married Maria Christina of Austria who gave him two daughters and a son who was born six months after his father's death.
8. What were the stumbling blocks of Alfonso XIII's wedding to Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg?

Answer: Religion and hemophilia

Of Queen Victoria's children only one, Leopold, was a sufferer of hemophilia and two, Alice and Beatrice, were carriers. So there was a very real possibility of Victoria Eugenie being a carrier. Unfortunately Victoria Eugenie was a carrier with two of their six children being sufferers.

A second stumbling block was her religion as a Queen of Spain had to be Roman Catholic, but she was willing to convert.
9. Where did Infante Juan Count of Barcelona meet his future wife?

Answer: His sister's wedding

He met his future wife Maria de lad Mercedes of Bourbon-Two Sicilies the day before his sister Beatriz' wedding in January 1935. He and Maria were married in November of the same year having four children one of which was the future King Juan Carlos I of Spain.
10. Where did the future Juan Carlos I and Sophia of Greece married?

Answer: Athens

Juan Carlos were married in Athens in 1962 once in a Greek ceremony and one in a Catholic ceremony. They had two daughters and a son who became King Felipe VI of Spain?
