Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which actor called Richard was nominated for an Academy Award seven times but never took the trophy home?

Answer: Richard Burton

Richard Burton was born in Pontrhydyfen in Wales in 1925. He was most famous for his two marriages to Elizabeth Taylor. The best of his film work was impressive, but there were some duds - 'The Medusa Touch'. His work on stage was legendary. An alcoholic, he died in 1984 in Switzerland.
2. Which sportsman called Richard was a pioneer in his sport, a thrilling all-round performer who never lost a series as captain of his country's side, and subsequently became a highly regarded commentator?

Answer: Richie Benaud

Richie Benaud (1930-2015) was one of the greatest all-rounders to have ever played cricket. He led the Australians in 28 tests. While he was still playing, he had journalism training with the BBC, studying their great exponents such as Peter O'Sullevan (who also died in 2015) and Dan Maskell.

He became one of the most distinctive and respected commentators in sport - the voice of cricket to many - memorable for his disdain of the infamous underarm delivery by Trevor Chappell and his championing of World Series Cricket, which did so much to shape the modern game.
3. Which composer called Richard had a 'succès de scandale' with his opera 'Salome'?

Answer: Richard Strauss

Richard Strauss (1864-1949) was one of the shapers of early 20th century classical music. Strauss's setting of Oscar Wilde's play 'Salome' was a sensation. Its combination of eroticism and the biblical theme was shocking. Some performers refused to perform the provocative 'Dance of the Seven Veils'.

The Austrian premiere at Graz in 1906, conducted by the composer, was one of the most keenly sought tickets in music. Composers such as Puccini, Mahler and Schoenberg were in attendance. It is said that a teenage Adolf Hitler may have been there too.
4. Which Richard was the author of 'Trout Fishing in America' who inspired the creation of an unusual library?

Answer: Richard Brautigan

Richard Brautigan (1935-1984) was an American author and poet with a distinctive style, whose books included 'A Confederate General from Big Sur' and the wonderful 'The Hawkline Monster: A Gothic Western'.

'The Abortion: An Historical Romance 1966' featured the curator of a library that was always open to receive unpublished books from anyone who wanted to bring them. Titles like: 'My Trike', 'Bacon Death', 'Leather Clothes and the History of Man' and 'Growing Flowers by Candlelight in Hotel Rooms'. Life imitated art, and 'The Brautigan Library' opened in Burlington, Vermont in 1990, to accept unpublished works. It has since moved to Vancouver, Washington.
5. Which scientist called Richard won a Nobel Prize and worked on the investigation into the Challenger Space Shuttle disaster?

Answer: Richard Feynman

Richard Feynman (1918-1988) had an extraordinary career as a theoretical physist. His work on quantum electrodynamics led to the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1965. His books were very influential in popularising and explaining science, including his benchmark series 'The Feynman Lectures on Physics'.

He played a major role on the 1986 'Rogers Commission' which investigated the Challenger disaster.
6. Which architect called Richard was known for his work on the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and the Lloyd's building in London?

Answer: Richard Rogers

Richard Rogers was born in 1933 in Florence, Italy. His family moved to the UK during World War II. He worked on the multi-cultural complex the Pompidou Centre (completed 1977) with Renzo Piano and Gianfranco Franchini. Its 'inside out' design was revolutionary and influential.

He kept to the theme for the Lloyd's building which was completed in 1986, and received Grade I listed status 25 years later.
7. Which Richard was an Irish playwright who created the immortal Mrs Malaprop?

Answer: Richard Brinsley Sheridan

Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751-1816) was born in Dublin and moved to London aged seven. He is best known as the author of plays such as 'The School for Scandal' and 'The Rivals'. The latter features Mrs Malaprop, whose mixing up of similar sounding words has led to the creation of the word 'malapropism'. Examples of her confusions include: 'he is the very pineapple of politeness' and 'illiterate him quite from your memory'.
8. Which Richard was the English king between Edward III and Henry IV?

Answer: Richard II

Richard II (1367-1400) succeeded his grandfather, Edward III in 1377. His father, Edward, the Black Prince had died in 1376 and his elder brother, Edward of Angoulême had died in 1370. His reign was difficult, with a lot of jostling for power between various parties.

The Peasants' Revolt in 1381 was a major challenge for the 14 year old king. Further power struggles eventually meant he was deposed in 1399 by his cousin, Henry of Bolingbroke, whom he had previously exiled. Richard died in captivity the following year.
9. Which Richard used a line from a song a girl sold him in one of his biggest hits?

Answer: Little Richard

Little Richard (born Richard Penniman in 1932) wanted a song to follow up his success with "Tutti Frutti" in 1956. His producer Robert Blackwell was introduced to a girl who said she had a song she wanted to sell to pay for medical treatment for her aunt.

She just had a piece of paper with the words: "Saw Uncle John with Long Tall Sally/They saw Aunt Mary comin'/So they ducked back in the alley." Richard liked the line 'ducked back in the alley' and together with Blackwell they put together the song 'Long Tall Sally' which became one of his biggest hits.

The girl got paid, but she didn't get a songwriting credit. Bizarrely, Enotris Johnson, Richard's adoptive father did get one, although he had nothing to do with the song.
10. Which Richard was a composer who was the first to win the set of awards known as the EGOT: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony?

Answer: Richard Rodgers

Richard Rodgers (1902-1979) was a prolific composer, famous for his partnerships with lyricists Lorenz Hart and Oscar Hammerstein II. As well as the EGOT set he also won the Pulitzer Prize for 'South Pacific'.
