1. Which famous politician who was not a German speaker said 'Ich bin ein Berliner'?

Answer: John F Kennedy

This was said at the Schoeneberg city hall in Berlin by President John F Kennedy during a visit to Berlin in 1963. It was meant to convey to the Germans and the Soviets that the U.S.A. would give their support to Germany after the erection of the Berlin wall twenty two months earlier by the Soviet Union. Kennedy did not speak German and he used a note "ish bin ein Bearleener" to help with his pronouncation of the phrase. President Kennedy often known as JFK was the thirty fifth president of the United States and was sadly assassinated on 22nd November 1963.
2. Who first coined the phrase 'England expects every man to do his duty'?

Answer: Horatio Nelson

This was a signal sent by Lord Nelson before the Battle of Trafalgar from his flagship 'The Victory'. The battle was a decisive victory for the British but sadly Nelson was killed during the engagement. Horatio Nelson was born in Norfolk and was one of eleven children. At the age of 12 he joined the navy and was 20 when he first became a ship's captain.

Answer: Harold McMillan

After the recovery from the second world war the British people began to enjoy a bit more prosperity, and it was to this that Harold McMillan, who was British prime minister from 1957 to 1963, was referring. He was speaking to conservative colleagues in Bedford in 1957 when he usd the phrase implying that as things were so good under the present ruling party it would be a mistake to vote a different party to power. McMillan served in the Grenadier Guards during the first world war.

He was wounded three times, the last time being in the battle of the Somme when his injury was so bad that he was unable to walk for some time and suffered from some mobility impairment for the rest of his life.

Answer: Mandy Rice Davis

These people were all involved in the Profumo scandal, except for Joanne Whalley who is the actress who played Christine Keeler in the movie 'Scandal' aboout the Profumo affair. Mandy said the phrase in court when she was told that Lord Astor denied sleeping with her.

It was considered very cheeky of her to suggest that such a pillar of the estalishment as Lord Astor might lie. Mandy and Christine were two of the girls in the group who Steven Ward introduced to rich men.

Answer: Henry Ford

Henry Ford founder of the Ford Motor Company first introduced the conception of the assemby line where each worker was responsible for one small stage in the manufacture of a car. This made production cheaper and meant that middle class people could afford cars rather than only the very rich.

He made this remark during an interview conducted by Fay Leone Laurote for an article entitled 'My Philosophy of Industry' in April 1928.

This phrase was used by the Queen in a speach on the occasion of the 40th Anniversary of her accession in 1952. During 1992 the magnificent Windsor Castle was very badly damaged by fire. "Black Wednesday" 16 September saw the suspension of the UK's membership of the European Exchange Rate Mechanism and the same year the Queen's son Prince Andrew and his wife Sarah Ferguson announced that they were to separate.

It is no wonder that the Queen thought of it as a horrible year. Queen Elizabeth II has reigned for longer than any other British monarch.

Answer: George Burns

George Burns lived to be 100, and was an entertainer for over 75 years having started his career in the days of Vaudeville Theatre. For many years he and his wife Gracie Allen had a very successful comedy show at first on radio and later on the television. George made this remark a number of times, sometimes he substituted the word sincerity for honesty.

In his book 'Third Time Around' about his late blooming career he used this phrase.

Noel Coward was born in 1899 and was certainly a multi talented person. He wrote plays including 'Hay Fever', 'Design for Living' and 'Easy Virtue' which was made into a movie starring Colin Firth and Jessica Biel. In his 1941 play 'Blythe Spirit' a character said 'It is discouraging to think how many people are shocked by honesty, and how few by deceit'.

He also wrote songs inclduing 'Mad Dogs and Englishmen' and 'Mad About The Boy'. As well as all this he was an actor and singer. Most of all he had a style and wit which was widely admired and defined the sophisticated manner of the time.

Answer: Princess Diana of Wales

On November 20th 1995 Princess Diana gave an interview on BBC television in which she talked about the affair between her husband Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles, who is now married to Charles and titled the Duchess of Cornwall. When Diana was tragically killed in a Paris car crash on 31st August 1997 there was such an outpour of grief from the public that it was clear that her wish had come true.

Answer: Adolf Hitler

This was said by Adolph Hitler the evil dictator of Germany from 1933 to 1945. He was responsible for World War II, which was triggered by his invasion of Poland. It is estimated that during his tenure as Chancellor he was responsible for the termination of approximately six million Jews, mostly in concentration camps.

The above quote comes from page 289 of his book 'Mein Kampf'. This work is a semi autobiographical explanation of how he became antisemitic and of his future plans for Germany.
