Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At 75 years of age Abram took a chance and left his country and kindred for a land God promised to show him. Which land did he depart from?

Answer: Haran

According to Genesis 12, Abram believed God when he told him that he would make of him a great nation and His blessing would be upon him. Verse 4 tells us that at the age of 75 he departed out of Haran. He took his wife, Sarai, his brother-in-law, Lot, all their substance and the souls that they had obtained in Haran and left to go into Canaan. Quite risky!
2. Which biblical woman made an ark of bulrushes for her baby boy, placed him in it and laid it in the flags by the river brink?

Answer: Jochebed

Pharaoh had given orders for all Hebrew baby boys to be thrown into the river. Jochebed was determined that her son, Moses, should live so she hid him for three months. When she could hide him no longer she placed him in the basket by the river brink and left Miriam, his sister, to watch him. Pharaoh's daughter found him and Miriam offered to get a Hebrew mother to nurse him.

As a result of the chance she took Jochebed was paid wages to nurse her own son. (Exodus 2:1-10)
3. Which Jewish queen said "... if I perish, I perish" when she was called upon by her cousin to take a chance which could save her people from destruction?

Answer: Esther

When Haman plotted the destruction of the Jews, Mordecai, Esther's cousin, sent to ask her to go in to the king and ask him to save her people. Esther knew that to go in to the king in the inner court without being called by him could lead to her death so she sent to tell her cousin that she had not been called by the king for 30 days. Mordecai sent back to let her know that if she did nothing to help the Jews they would be delivered by some other means but she would be destroyed along with her father's house. Esther decided to take the chance and go in to the king even if she perished.

The chance she took paid off and the Jews were delivered. (Esther 4-10)
4. Which prophet took a chance on trying to run away because he didn't want to obey God, and ended up in the belly of a large sea creature?

Answer: Jonah

Jonah was sent by God to cry against the inhabitants of Nineveh. He did not want to obey God so he went down to Joppa to get a ship that was going to Tarshish in a bid to get away from God's presence. The chance he took was unsuccessful. After being regurgitated by the sea creature that swallowed him he went to do God's bidding.

The Ninevites repented and were saved, much to his displeasure. (Jonah 1-4)
5. A young man escaped death after his father took the chance of attempting to offer him up as a burnt offering to God. Who was he?

Answer: Isaac

In Genesis 22 Abraham was told by God to take his only son to Mount Moriah and offer him as a burnt offering. Abraham obeyed God by faith. He prepared the altar and placed Isaac on it. As soon as he took the knife to sacrifice Isaac God stopped him from killing the lad and provided a ram for the offering. What a game of chance to play!
6. Which woman took a risk by casting in her lot with her mother-in-law after the death of her husband?

Answer: Ruth

In Ruth 1-4 Ruth decided that she would not return home with Orpah but she would make Naomi's people and home hers. The chance she took yielded high dividends as she ended up with Boaz as her second husband.
7. How many Hebrews took a chance when they refused to bow to the golden image of a great king?

Answer: 3

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were Hebrew slaves in the kingdom of Babylon. When Nebuchadnezzar set up his golden image in the plain of Dura the young men decided that whether or not God delivered them they would not bow. The chance they were taking could be deadly. They were soon bound and cast into the fiery furnace for their disobedience.

The men who cast them in died immediately but when Nebuchadnezzar took a look he could not believe his eyes. There were four men loose walking about in the flames; in the Christian tradition, one had the appearance of the Son of God.

The king called out Shadrach, Meschach and Abenego and they came out of the fire unharmed. God received the glory. (Read Daniel 3)
8. This woman played a dangerous game of chance by hiding two Israelite spies on the roof of her house while they were being sought by the king's men. What was the occupation of this woman?

Answer: She was a harlot.

Rahab, the harlot, had heard of how God was with the Israelites. She knew that God had given the land to them and she wished to be saved with her family from the destruction which was imminent. The spies assured her that if she brought all her family into her house and tied the scarlet thread that she let them down by in the window, she, along with all who were in her house would be saved.

In this game of chance Rahab was victorious as she was saved with her family when Jericho fell. (Joshua 2 & 6:25)
9. Daniel played a serious game of chance by praying openly after a law was passed that no one should offer any petition to any one except the king for 30 days. Penalty for law breaking...being fed to hungry lions. Which king made the decree?

Answer: Darius

King Darius was flattered by his presidents, governors, counsellors and captains into passing a law that they knew would come into conflict with Daniel's faith. Daniel did not waver when this law was passed but continued his usual prayer life. God came through for him and the men who plotted his death ended up being meal for the lions. (Read Daniel 6)
10. Refusing to lie with a beautiful, seductive and powerful Egyptian woman was a chance a young man had to take if he wanted to maintain his allegiance with God. Who was the woman he rejected?

Answer: Potiphar's wife

Potiphar's wife was attracted by Joseph and invited him to lie with her. She refused to heed his constant rejections and eventually caught him by his garment.
Joseph fled and left her with his garment. She fabricated falsehoods against him using his garment as proof. After his imprisonment God raised up Joseph to the highest position in Egypt next to Pharaoh.
11. Which Old Testament character had his eyes put out when he played a game of chance by telling his Philistine lover the secret of his great strength?

Answer: Samson

Samson was one of the judges of Israel. He was raised up to deliver Israel from the Philistines. However, Samson seemed to find Philistine women irresistible and they distracted him from his mission. When Delilah pressed him daily to find out the secret of his strength he eventually told her all his heart.

She caused him to sleep on her knees and his seven locks of hair were shaven. Samson lost his strength and the Philistines took him and put out his eyes. He was taunted by the Philistines daily. Nevertheless, when Samson cried out to God he brought down the temple of Dagon on the feasting Philistines.

It is recorded that Samson slew more Philistines at his death than in his life. (Judges 14-16)

Answer: Obadiah

When Elijah returned to show himself to Ahab after three years of drought he saw Obadiah in the way and told him to go and tell Ahab that he had returned. Obadiah was very fearful to do so because he thought the Spirit of the Lord would carry away Elijah and he would be killed by Ahab. After being reassured by Elijah that he would surely show himself to Ahab he delivered the message.
Elijah then met with Ahab and the show down at Mount Carmel ensued. (1 Kings 18)

When he was told that it was Elisha who was able to tell the king of Israel all his secrets he sent horses and chariots to compass the city of Dothan and capture Elisha. Quite a risky move on his part.

After receiving the gifts Gehazi returned to Elisha who asked him where he had gone.

As soon as he lied Elisha pronounced a curse on Gehazi and his seed and the leprosy of Naaman cleaved to Gehazi.

He left from Elisha's presence a leper. His game of chance ran amok. Oh dear! (Read 2 Kings 5)
15. Talk about a game of chance! This woman was collecting sticks to prepare her very last meal. After that she and her son would die because of the famine. Up comes the man of God and tells her to prepare a little cake for him first before attempting to feed herself and her son. Preposterous! Does she play the game? She does and hits the jackpot. Can you name this woman?

Answer: The widow of Zarephath

The widow of Zarephath had hit rock bottom. There was a famine in the land. All she had was a handful of meal in the barrel and a little oil in the cruse.
