Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many times did Jesus miraculously calm storms on the Sea of Galilee?

Answer: 2

Scripture tells of Jesus miraculously calming storms on the Sea of Galilee on two different occasions. Details of Jesus calming the first storm can be found in Matthew 8, Mark 4 and Luke 8. Meanwhile, Matthew 14 and Mark 6 contain accounts of Jesus calming the second storm on the Sea of Galilee.

Scripture states Christ was sleeping in a boat rowed by the Twelve Disciples when He calmed the first storm. Meanwhile, the Twelve Disciples encountered Jesus walking on the water while they were rowing a boat during a raging storm on the sea during the second incident.

In both incidents, Jesus rebuked the waves and immediately the water became placid, Scripture states.
2. Mark 10:46-52 tells of Jesus miraculously healing Bartimaeus of his blindness. How long did it take for Bartimaeus to regain his sight after Jesus said his faith had made him well?

Answer: It happened immediately

Bartimaeus regained his sight immediately, according to Mark 10:46-52. The passage tells of Jesus encountering blind Bartimaeus begging by the side of the road at Jericho. After Bartimaeus referred to Jesus as the "Son of David", a Messianic term for Christ, he was asked by Jesus, "What do you want Me to do for you?" When Bartimaeus said he wanted to be able to see, Jesus is quoted as saying, "Go your way; your faith has made you well." Verse 52 states "immediately" he received his sight and followed Jesus on the road.

Incidentally, the word 'immediately' is found more often in Mark than in any other book in the Christian Bible. Using the NKJV, the word immediately is found no less than thirty-six times in Mark. The next closest book for usage of the word immediately is Matthew with nineteen occurrences.
3. Scripture tells of Jesus informing Peter to look in an unlikely place to find a coin to pay the temple tax. According to Matthew 17:24-27, where did Jesus tell Peter he would find the coin?

Answer: In the mouth of a fish

Jesus instructed Peter to go fishing and after he caught his first fish he was to look in its mouth where he would find a coin to pay the obligatory temple tax. Matthew is the only book in the New Testament that contains details about Peter miraculously finding the coin. For details about the miracle, see Matthew 17:24-27.
4. Scripture tells of a large, but unspecified, number of people being miraculously healed by simply touching Jesus.

Answer: True

True, according to the Gospel of Mark a large number of people were miraculously healed by simply touching Jesus. Details can be found in Chapters 6 and 3.

For example, Mark 6:53-56 tells of Jesus arriving in Gennesaret after walking on the Sea of Galilee and after feeding five thousand men (no numbers are given for women and children) with five loaves of bread and two fish. The passage tells of the people in Gennesaret running though "the whole surrounding region" and carrying the sick on beds to wherever they heard He was.

Verses 56 and 57 give this amazing account in the NKJV: "Wherever He entered, into villages, cities, or the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged Him that they might just touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched Him were made well."

A similar account appears in Matthew 14:36 and Luke 6:17-19.

Mark 3:7-12 gives another account of a massive number of people being healed by simply touching Jesus. Verses 9-11 state: "So He told His disciples that a small boat should be kept ready for Him because of the multitude, lest they should crush Him. For He healed many, so that as many as had afflictions pressed about Him to touch Him. And the unclean spirits, whenever they saw Him, fell down before Him and cried out, saying, 'You are the Son of God'."
5. What was the name of the disciple Jesus said He saw sitting under a fig tree, presumably from a substantially long distance?

Answer: Nathanael

Nathanael, also known as Bartholomew, is the correct answer. Scripture is short on details, but it's apparent Jesus saw Nathanael sitting under a fig tree from a considerable distance as the disciple-to-be expressed amazement at Christ's claim.

John 1:43-50 tells of Philip, one of the original Twelve Disciples, convincing Nathanael to go with him to meet Jesus of Nazareth. The passage tells of Jesus seeing Nathanael coming toward Him and stating, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!"

In response, Nathanael said to Christ, "How do You know me?" Jesus answered by saying, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you."

Verse 49 tells of Nathanael being amazed at Christ's claim, and then stating: "Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!"

Verse 50 contains Christ's answer to Nathanael: "Because I said to you, 'I saw you under the fig tree,' do you believe? You will see greater things than these."

Going by the Bible, Nathanael was the first disciple to proclaim Jesus as the Son of God.
6. What was the name of the man Jesus miraculously healed who had a withered hand?

Answer: No name is given

No name is given for the man who was miraculously healed of his withered hand by Jesus. (The NIV uses the term shriveled hand rather than withered.) The account of the healing appears in Luke 6:6-11.

Not much in the way of details are given about the man, apart from the fact it was his right hand that was withered. The passage tells of Jesus commanding the man to stretch out his hand in the synagogue. Miraculously, when the man stretched his hand out it was "restored as whole as the other."
7. The Pharisees were often outraged with Jesus because He performed miraculous healings on the Sabbath.

Answer: True

All four Gospels -- Matthew, Mark, Luke and John -- tell of the Pharisees being outraged with Jesus because He performed miraculous healings on the Sabbath.

Two miracles performed on a Sabbath by Jesus and strongly denounced by the Pharisees involved the healing of the man with a withered hand (Matthew 12:9-13, Mark 3:1-5 and Luke 6:6-10) and the paralytic (Luke 5:17-26).

Using the twisted logic of the Pharisees, Jesus should've ignored the poor, suffering people because by helping them He was desecrating the Sabbath. On top of healing people on the Sabbath, the Pharisees were livid with Jesus because He said He was the Son of God.
8. What was the name of the man Jesus raised from the dead, shortly before His crucifixion?

Answer: Lazarus

Shortly before His crucifixion, Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead at Bethany. According to John 11, Lazarus was the brother of Mary and Martha and lived in Bethany. He had been dead for four days when he was miraculously brought back to life by Christ.

The Bible isn't precise when it comes to the timeframe between Lazarus being raised from the dead and Christ's crucifixion. However, the common belief is the two events were relatively close together, anywhere from one to two weeks apart.

According to various websites, the Saturday before Palm Sunday is celebrated as 'Lazarus Saturday' in the Eastern Orthodox tradition. The day commemorates the raising of Lazarus from the dead by Jesus.
9. When Jesus performed a miraculous healing, Scripture states He often told those who were healed not to tell anyone.

Answer: True

True. Jesus often told those He miraculously healed not to tell anyone. There are different theories as to why Jesus gave instructions for the people to remain quiet.

A common belief is He wanted people to concentrate on His message of love and forgiveness and not to see Him as simply a Man of miracles. In addition to a message of love and forgiveness, Christ preached He was the Son of God and He was sent into the world to save it, not to condemn it. If people focused on His miracles, there was a danger His message would not register with them.

However, His instructions to those miraculously healed to not tell anyone were often not followed. A prime example of this fact can be found in Mark 1:40-45, a passage telling of Jesus cleansing a leper by simply touching him and uttering the words "be cleansed."

The passage also tells of Jesus "strictly" warning the the cleansed leper "to say nothing to anyone." However, the exact opposite happened. The passage concludes by saying the cleansed leper "went out and began to proclaim it freely, and to spread the matter, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter the city, but was outside in deserted places; and they came to Him from every direction."
10. Out of the four miracles listed below, which one is mentioned in all four Gospels?

Answer: The resurrection of Christ

The resurrection of Christ is mentioned in all four Gospels -- Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Details about Jesus turning water into wine are found in John while the account of Jesus healing blind Bartimaeus appears in Mark. Meanwhile, details of Jesus raising Jairus' daughter from the dead are found in Matthew, Mark and Luke.
