Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the NIV version of the Holy Bible in the Gospel of Matthew 19th chapter Jesus says, "Everyone is good."

Answer: False

Believe it or not Jesus actually says quite the reverse! In Matthew 19:16-17; "Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, '(Good)Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?' 'Why do you ask me about what is good?' Jesus replied. 'There is only One who is good. If you want to enter(enjoy) life, keep the commandments.'" - NIV Bible.
In summary what Jesus is saying is that there is only One, God our Creator, who is perfectly good.
2. Again in the Gospel of Matthew in the NIV Bible, Jesus said that John the Baptist was greater than all the prophets, kings and heroes of the Old Testament.

Answer: True

In the NIV version of the Holy Bible John the Baptist and Jesus are next of kin since their mothers are related. In Matthew 11:10-13 Jesus says of John, "This is the one about whom it is written: 'I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.' Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence, and violent people have been raiding it. For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John." Jesus implying that even the least person believing in Him is greater than John.
3. In the NIV Bible in the Book of John, Jesus says, "Very truly I tell you, no one can see or enter the kingdom of God unless they are born again."

Answer: True

Nicodemus, a Pharisee, was a secret acknowledger of Jesus. Again one needs to emphasise that the Pharisees often misinterpreted what Jesus said because when Jesus meant the spirit they were thinking in physical or bodily terms. In John 3:2-9, "He came to Jesus at night and said, 'Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.' Jesus replied, 'Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.' 'How can someone be born when they are old?' Nicodemus asked. 'Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother's womb to be born!' Jesus answered, 'Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.' The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.'"
4. In the NIV Bible in the Gospel of Mark, Jesus said, "The kingdom of God is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth."

Answer: True

This seed, akin to the kingdom of God, indeed is one of the smallest seeds, however with God's blessing it grows and overshadows all the other plants. Jesus here is emphasising that no matter how small a beginning or seemingly impossible situation, it is God's will, ability and blessing that matters. Mark 10:27: "With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God." In Mark 4:26-32 Jesus says, "This is what the kingdom of God is like.

A man scatters seed on the ground. Night and day, whether he sleeps or is awake, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. All by itself the soil produces grain--first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head.

As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come. Again it is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade." - NIV Bible
5. In the NIV Bible in John's Gospel Jesus says, "The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing."

Answer: True

Amazing words from the Master especially in that day and age! The Spirit is the giver of life and its abundance, and the flesh is nothing in comparison. It's right in line with Genesis 2:7; "Then the LORD God formed man in His own image from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath (spirit) of life, and the man became a living being." In John 6:63 Jesus says, "The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing.

The words I have spoken to you--they are full of the Spirit and life." - NIV Bible
6. In the New Living Translation Bible in the Book of Matthew Jesus says, "And from the time John the Baptist began preaching until now, the Kingdom of Heaven has been forcefully advancing, and violent(in spirit) people are attacking it."

Answer: True

Jesus again of course talking spiritually while saying this in the NIV in Matthew 11:12 and then goes on to say in the same chapter; "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." Luke 16:16 gives balance and greater insight; "The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the Good News of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing their way into it." In relative context, the Jews saw themselves as special people and the Jewish faith or religion was not exactly invitationally open to everyone.
7. In the Book of Matthew in the NIV Bible Jesus says, "I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves."

Answer: True

In Matthew 10:16, Jesus instructs his disciples not to be total simpletons especially when dealing with cunning shrewd people in the open world and at the same time to be most innocent when dealing with the innocent. This is akin to the exhortation of Paul in 1st Corinthians 14:20 "Dear brothers and sisters, stop thinking like children.

In regard to evil be babes, but in your thinking be adults." Also in Romans 16:19; "But everyone knows that you are obedient to the Lord. This makes me very happy. I want you to be wise in doing right and to stay innocent of any wrong."
8. In the NIV Bible in the Book of Matthew Jesus says, "So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums the Law and the Prophets."

Answer: True

Jesus says this in the NIV Bible in Matthew 7:12. In context Jesus is emphasising the universal law of sowing and reaping mentioned in Galatians 6:7-9. Agriculturists and farmers are well versed with the fact that the future harvest will only be a multiplication of the seed which they have invested their efforts in sowing.

For example if we sow love in our dealings with others we can expect the same in the future from others. This verse maybe is the origin of the phrase "what goes around comes around".
9. Again in the Book of Matthew in the NIV Bible Jesus says, "Love your neighbor however not yourself."

Answer: False

Jesus actually asks us to love our neighbour as we love ourselves. Jesus is implicitly implying that we can only in the same measure love others if we love ourselves. In Matthew 22:35-40 ; "One of them (Pharisees), an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 'Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?' Jesus replied: 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets depend on these two commandments.'"
10. In the NIV Bible in the Book of Mark Jesus said that whoever wants to be first or the greatest must be a great commander, teacher and lord over all.

Answer: False

Last but not the least in Mark 9:35 the NIV Bible says, "Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve (disciples) and said, 'Anyone who wants to be first or the greatest must be the very last, and the servant of all.'" Also in Matthew 20:26-29 He says, "Not so with you.

Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave--just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Jesus symbolically also washed the feet of His disciples to emphasise this. Similarly in Matthew 20:1-16; "So the last will be first, and the first will be last."
