Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Numbers 11:14 in the NKJV tells of a man pouring his heart out to God saying, "I am not able to bear all these people alone, because the burden is too heavy for me." Who was the man who said he could no longer lead the Israelites alone?

Answer: Moses

Moses, it appears, was near the end of his rope when he poured his hear out to God, saying he was "not able to bear all these people alone". In the next verse in the NKJV, Moses goes on to tell God, "If You treat me like this, please kill me here and now -- if I have found favor in Your sight -- and do not let me see my wretchedness!"

Scripture goes on to tell of God instructing Moses to select seventy men to serve as elders to provide assistance in leading the Israelites.
2. 1 Kings 18:22 in the NKJV contains the word 'alone' and is part of a quote by a prophet of God. Here's the verse with the prophet's name omitted: "Then _______ said to the people, 'I alone am left a prophet of the LORD; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men.'" Who is the prophet of God who made the statement about being alone?

Answer: Elijah

Elijah was a prophet of God who was a major adversary of King Ahab and his wicked wife Jezebel. According to Scripture, Ahab and Jezebel were committed to having Israel worship false gods and they took action to kill all prophets of God. Try as they may, however, they could never remove Elijah from the scene.

1 Kings 18 tells of Elijah having a dramatic showdown with four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. In Verse 22, Elijah proclaimed he alone was left as a prophet of God and he was vastly outnumbered by the prophets of Baal. Nevertheless, Elijah set up a competition in which he would call upon God to ignite a sacrificial offering on Mount Carmel while his four hundred and fifty adversaries would call on Baal. Elijah, of course, was the clear winner.

According to 1 Kings 18:40, after the showdown on Mount Carmel, the defeated prophets of Baal were taken to Brook Kishon and executed.
3. Scripture tells of a violent wind striking a house, killing ten young people inside. However, one unnamed person survived and proclaimed in the NKJV to the father of the ten young people, "I alone have escaped to tell you!" Who was the recipient of the news that his seven sons and three daughters had been killed?

Answer: Job

Job is the correct answer. Job 1:18-19 tells of an unnamed messenger informing Job his seven sons and three daughters were killed when a windstorm demolished the house they were in. The messenger concluded by stating, "I alone have escaped to tell you!"

Actually, this was the fourth messenger to visit Job with devastating news. The first messenger informed Job a raiding party killed his servants and stole all his donkeys. Then a second messenger told Job, "the fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants," as per Job 1:16 in the NKJV. Then a third messenger told him a raiding party killed his servants and stole all his camels. In every case, the messengers told Job, "I alone have escaped to tell you."
4. Judges 11:37 tells of the unnamed daughter of a judge of Israel requesting permission to "let me alone for two months, that I may go and wander on the mountains", and then she would become her father's sacrificial offering. What was her father's name?

Answer: Jephthah

Jephthah, a judge of Israel, made an oath with God and his unnamed daughter ended up paying with her life. The bizarre story is told in Judges 11:29-40. According to the passage in the NKJV, Jephthah was leading the Israelites in a heated battle against the Amonites when he pledged to God he would sacrifice the first thing that came out the doors of his house, "if You will indeed deliver the people of Ammon into my hands."

When God delivered the Amonites into Jephthah's hands, he returned home and was horrified when his only child, a daughter, was the first one out of his house to greet him.

Surprisingly, Jephthah's daughter took the news that she would become a sacrificial offering to God in stride. In Judges 11:37, his daughter is quoted as telling him: "Let this thing be done for me: let me alone for two months, that I may go and wander on the mountains and bewail my virginity, my friends and I."

Two months later, she returned to Jephthah and he carried out his vow to God.
5. Here's an Old Testament verse from the NKJV that contains the word 'alone': "I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; for You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety." In what book do you find this verse?

Answer: Psalms

The verse is from Psalm 4:8. The Psalm was written by David, a noted king of Israel. To put the verse in context, here's how Psalm 4:7-8 reads in the NKJV: "You have put gladness in my heart, more than in the season that their grain and wine increased. I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; For You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety."

Out of one hundred and fifty Psalms that appear in the Old Testament, David is credited with writing more than seventy of them.
6. Matthew 4:4 in the NKJV quotes Jesus as saying, "It is written,'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'" To whom did Jesus make the statement 'man shall not live by bread alone'?

Answer: Satan

Jesus made the statement to Satan while he was trying to tempt Him during a forty day fast in the desert. The devil had previously told Jesus, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread." That's when Christ responded, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'"

Despite three different attempts to tempt Christ, the devil was unsuccessful.
7. Jesus is quoted as saying in Mark 14:6 in the NKJV, "Let her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a good work for Me." After what event did Jesus make this statement that contains the word 'alone'?

Answer: A woman who anointed Jesus with expensive oil

Jesus made the statement after a woman anointed Him with expensive oil in Bethany at the house of Simon the Leper. Mark 14:3-9 in the NKJV states a woman anointed Jesus with "very costly oil of spikenard" and some were critical of the woman, saying the fragrant oil could have been sold and the proceeds given to the poor.

In response to the criticism, Jesus is quoted as saying: "Let her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a good work for Me. For you have the poor with you always, and whenever you wish you may do them good; but Me you do not have always.

She has done what she could. She has come beforehand to anoint My body for burial."
8. Luke 10:40 in the NKJV tells of a busy woman proclaiming to Jesus, "Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me." Who made the statement to Jesus that her sister had left her alone to serve?

Answer: Martha

Martha, the sister of Lazarus and Mary, made the statement to Jesus. While Martha and Mary were sisters, Scripture indicates they had completely different personalities. While Martha was industrious, Mary was insightful.

Their differences are abundantly apparent in Luke 10:38-42. The passage tells of Martha being busy preparing things for a gathering in their house while Mary sat at Jesus' feet listening to Him speak.

When Martha complained to Jesus that Mary should be helping her, He responded by saying in the NKJV: "Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her."
9. Acts 5:38 in the NKJV tells of a Pharisee making a statement which would have a dramatic impact on the early church. In a nutshell, the Pharisee said when it came to followers of Jesus, the authorities should "let them alone for if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing." Who was the Pharisee who made the statement the followers of Jesus should be let alone?

Answer: Gamaliel

Gamaliel was the high priest, and his decision to let the followers of Jesus alone would have a dramatic impact on the spread of the Gospel message. No longer were the members of the early church regarded as criminals and severely persecuted. With a break in opposition, early church workers apparently seized the opportunity to win as many converts as possible.

In backing up his point of view, Gamaliel made reference to false prophets called Theudas and Judas of Galilee. After the two false prophets died, their followers were scattered and their movements died.

In Acts 5:38-39 in the NKJV, Gamaliel proclaimed: "... keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing; but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it -- lest you even be found to fight against God."

Scripture goes on to tell of the council agreeing with him.
10. While Jesus was dying in agony on the cross, Matthew 27:49 tells of the people making a statement in apparent jest. Here's the verse, containing the word 'alone', and with a person's name omitted: "Let Him alone; let us see if ________ will come to save Him." What is the missing name from the verse?

Answer: Elijah

The missing name from Matthew 27:49 is Elijah, a prophet of God from the Old Testament. In other words, when Jesus was dying in agony on the cross, His opponents were mocking Him. Their logic was, if Jesus claimed to be the Son of God, why doesn't Elijah come to save Him? A similar statement pertaining to Elijah saving Jesus appears in Mark 15:36.

The opponents of Christ, however, failed to realize that Jesus came to the earth in the form of a human to save mankind, and that His death on the cross would be the ultimate sin offering.
