Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jeremiah was a young man when God called him to be a prophet to many nations. Before what event did God tell Jeremiah He knew him, in Jeremiah 1:5 (NIV version)?

Answer: before Jeremiah's birth

Jeremiah recorded in the first chapter of his book that God spoke to him saying, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations." (Jeremiah 1:5). Jeremiah was afraid because he was young and did not have much experience, but God told him not to be afraid. God spoke to him and said, "Do not say, 'I am too young.' You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you," (Jeremiah 1:7)
2. In the first chapter of the book of Jeremiah, what were the first two signs God showed him?

Answer: a branch of an almond tree and a boiling pot running over

God showed Jeremiah the branch of an almond tree and a boiling pot running over. He asked Jeremiah to describe what he saw, and Jeremiah did. Then God told Jeremiah, "From the north disaster will be poured out on all who live in the land. I am about to summon all the peoples of the northern kingdoms.

Their kings will come and set up their thrones in the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem; they will come against all her surrounding walls and against all the towns of Judah. I will pronounce my judgments on my people because of their wickedness in forsaking me, in burning incense to other gods and in worshiping what their hands have made." (Jeremiah 1:14-16)
3. God told Jeremiah to go to the temple and prophesy. According to Jeremiah 7:11, what had the Israelites turned the house of God into? (NIV version)

Answer: a den of robbers

God accused them of making His house a den of robbers. The Israelites had not followed the commandments of God and were worshiping idols. God warned of the coming destruction He would give, but pleaded with the Israelites to change their wicked ways. "'Will you steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury, burn incense to Baal and follow other gods you have not known, and then come and stand before me in this house, which bears my Name, and say, "We are safe" -safe to do all these detestable things? Has this house, which bears my Name, become a den of robbers to you? But I have been watching!' declares the Lord." (Jeremiah 7:9-11)
4. In Jeremiah 18, God told the prophet to go to the potter's house. What message did God give to Jeremiah after the prophet observed how the potter formed clay? (NIV version)

Answer: "Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?"

After Jeremiah had watched the potter, Jeremiah heard God speak. "Then the word of the Lord came to me. He said, 'Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?' declares the Lord. 'Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, Israel. If at any time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be uprooted, torn down and destroyed, and if that nation I warned repents of its evil, then I will relent and not inflict on it the disaster I had planned. And if at another time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be built up and planted, and if it does evil in my sight and does not obey me, then I will reconsider the good I had intended to do for it.'" (Jeremiah 18:5-10) God wanted Israel to turn to Him so He could avoid the upcoming disasters.
5. God instructed Jeremiah to write His prophetic words on a scroll. Who destroyed the scroll by burning it with fire?

Answer: Jehoiakim, king of Judah

Jeremiah obeyed God and wrote down all the words that God gave to him. When the scroll was presented to King Jehoiakim, the king burned the scroll with fire in front of the entire court. God told Jeremiah to write down the words on another scroll. He also told Jeremiah to prophesy to the king that because of his actions, King Jehoiakim would have no descendants on the thrown after him and would not have a proper burial. (Jeremiah 36:27-31) King Jehoiakim was taken captive by the Babylonians and died on the way to Babylon.
6. The people continued to rebel against Babylon. In Jeremiah 27, God told Jeremiah to take a wooden yoke and tell the people that they needed to submit to Babylon. When a false prophet broke the yoke and prophesied prosperity, what did God tell him he would replace the wooden yoke with?

Answer: yokes of iron

God told Jeremiah to wear a wooden yoke and prophesy to the people. God wanted the people to submit to Babylon and told them that every kingdom that opposed Babylon would be destroyed. He told them that Nebuchadnezzar would make them all slaves with heavy yokes.

A false prophet grabbed the yoke from Jeremiah and broke it. He told the people God would break Nebuchadnezzar in pieces just like he broke the wooden yoke. The people rejoiced, but it was a lie.

God told Jeremiah to go back and tell the false prophet, "I am the Lord All-Powerful, the God of Israel. You smashed a wooden yoke, but I will replace it with one made of iron. I will put iron yokes on all the nations, and they will have to do what King Nebuchadnezzar commands. I will even let him rule the wild animals. Hananiah, I have never sent you to speak for me. And yet you have talked my people into believing your lies and rebelling against me. So now I will send you-I'll send you right off the face of the earth! You will die before this year is over."

As God said, the false prophet died. (Jeremiah 27 and 28)
7. When officials heard that Jeremiah was encouraging people to go peacefully with the Babylonians, where did they imprison him?

Answer: a cistern of mud

Jeremiah was accused of causing desertion among the king's soldiers. After the king agreed, officials took Jeremiah and threw him in a cistern filled with mud. A man named Ebed-Melek petitioned the king if he could save Jeremiah, and the king granted his request. Because of the effect of the mud, Jeremiah had to be rescued with a rope made out of rags. (Jeremiah 37) Jeremiah was placed in the courtyard of another prison for his safety.
8. More than once, Jeremiah was very discouraged. According to Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV version), what were God's plans concerning Jeremiah and the people who faithfully served Him?

Answer: "Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

God told Jeremiah to write down to the people who were faithful, "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11)

God promised to bring them back after seventy years, back to their homes and land that had been destroyed.
9. When King Nebuchadnezzar conquered Judah, he let Jeremiah go free because he had heard of Jeremiah's efforts to turn the people to God and go peacefully with Babylon.

Answer: True

Jeremiah was at first taken captive with the rest of the people, but on the trip, King Nebuchadnezzar had a soldier set Jeremiah free.

Jeremiah wrote, "I was led away in chains along with the people of Judah and Jerusalem who were being taken to Babylonia. Nebuzaradan was the officer in charge of the guard, and while we were stopped at Ramah, the Lord had him set me free. Nebuzaradan said, 'Jeremiah, the Lord your God warned your people that he would bring disaster on this land. But they continued to rebel against him, and now he has punished them just as he threatened. 'Today I am taking the chains off your wrists and setting you free! If you want to, you can come with me to Babylonia, and I will see that you are taken care of. Or if you decide to stay here, you can go wherever you wish. King Nebuchadnezzar has chosen Gedaliah to rule Judah. You can live near Gedaliah, and he will provide for you, or you can live anywhere else you want.'
Nebuzaradan gave me a supply of food, then let me leave. I decided to stay with the people of Judah, and I went to live near Gedaliah in Mizpah." (Jeremiah 40:1-6)
10. What did Jeremiah buy from his cousin Hanamel as a sign that the Israelites would return from captivity and have prosperity once again?

Answer: the deed to a field

God would fulfill his plan to destroy Judea, but He gave Jeremiah a promise that the Israelites would return and be prosperous again. He told Jeremiah to go and buy the field that his uncle wanted to sell him. Jeremiah did as God said and bought the field in front of many people.

Afterwards God told Jeremiah, "This is what the Lord says: As I have brought all this great calamity on this people, so I will give them all the prosperity I have promised them. Once more fields will be bought in this land of which you say, 'It is a desolate waste, without people or animals, for it has been given into the hands of the Babylonians.' Fields will be bought for silver, and deeds will be signed, sealed and witnessed in the territory of Benjamin, in the villages around Jerusalem, in the towns of Judah and in the towns of the hill country, of the western foothills and of the Negev, because I will restore their fortunes, declares the Lord." (Jeremiah 32:42-44)
