Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Psalm 1 states that the good man, who doesn't listen to evil, doesn't do evil, and doesn't mock those who refrain from evil, but who delights in the law of the Lord, is like a _________ planted by streams of water. Like a what?

Answer: tree

According to this psalm, just as the tree is sustained by the constant water supply, and is fruitful and able to endure drought, so the good man is sustained by the law of the Lord. There is a close parallel between Psalm 1:1a, 2-3 and Jeremiah 17:7-8, the main difference being that in Jeremiah the good man trusts in the Lord Himself, rather than in the law of the Lord.
2. In Psalm 2:9 God promises that His Anointed one will break the nations who stand against Him with a rod. What kind of rod?

Answer: iron

Handel's 'Messiah' uses much of Psalm 2 (specifically, verses 1 and 2, verse 3 in chorus, verse 4, and then verse 9). In the context, illustrated in quotation below, verse 9 says that the Son of God will subdue the heathen (people who, according to the Bible, do not believe in God) with 'a rod of iron.'
Psalm 2:1-3, 7-8a, 9: (This is the KJV text which, of course, was the only English text available in 1741/42 when 'Messiah' was composed.)
"1 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? 2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, 3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. ... 7 I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. 8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen... 9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel."
3. In Psalm 14:1 we read that 'The fool has said in his heart, "_____________." (Hint: For 'The fool', try substituting 'Richard Dawkins'.) What did the fool say?

Answer: There is no God.

Of course, you may or may not agree; that's the Bible's opinion. The Psalm indicates that, because of "the fool's" unbelief in God (or, therefore, in Divine judgement), such unbelievers act in evil ways, having no fear of the consequences.
4. Psalm 22 is one which Christians consider to be prophetic; here are three key verses from it: "16 Yea, dogs are round about me; a company of evildoers encircle me; they have pierced my hands and feet- 17 I can count all my bones- they stare and gloat over me; 18 they divide my garments among them, and for my raiment they ________." (RSV text) What is it that they do for His raiment (clothing)?

Answer: cast lots.

Mark 15:16-20
16 Then the soldiers led Him away into the hall called Praetorium, and they called together the whole garrison. 17 And they clothed Him with purple; and they twisted a crown of thorns, put it on His head, 18 and began to salute Him, "Hail, King of the Jews!" 19 Then they struck Him on the head with a reed and spat on Him; and bowing the knee, they worshiped Him. 20 And when they had mocked Him, they took the purple off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him.

John 19:23-24a
23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. 24 They said therefore among themselves, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,"
(NKJV text)
5. Psalm 23 begins with, "The Lord is my __________, I shall not want." What is the Lord to me?

Answer: Shepherd

This well-known Psalm casts the Lord as Shepherd of His people, who watches over them and provides for their every need. To 'lie down in green pastures' illustrates a sheep which is completely satisfied (a sheep among good pasture will stand and continue eating until it can't find room for any more food!).
To be led 'beside still waters' refers to clean, quiet water such as sheep prefer to drink from (sheep do not like to drink from turbulent, fast-flowing water).
6. Psalm 51:3 says: "For I know my transgressions, and my sin ______________."? (RSV text) What does David say about his sin?

Answer: is ever before me.

Psalm 51 was written by a penitent King David after he committed adultery with Bathsheba, and arranged her husband Uriah's death in battle. David frankly acknowledges his wrongdoing - in fact, as he says in this verse, he finds his guilt inescapable. And it is this that brings him to repentance.
7. Psalm 30:5 reads: "Weeping may endure for a night, but _________ comes in the morning." What comes in the morning?

Answer: joy

This particular verse, often used as a general purpose verse for comforting someone going through a time of trial, is speaking about our response to God's displeasure (when we have sinned), and to His favour, swiftly restored (because He is swift to forgive when we repent).
8. "Your word is a lamp to my feet, and ______________________." What words complete this famous verse, in the NKJV text?

Answer: a light to my path.

This very famous verse is found in the rather lengthy Psalm 119, which has 169 verses, all of which are dedicated to extolling the value and blessing of God's Word: Holy Scripture. This verse is Psalm 119:105.
9. "The stone which the builders rejected has become..." What has it become?

Answer: the chief cornerstone

Jesus quotes this scripture, Psalm 118:22, with reference to Himself (Matthew 21:42-44, also Mark 12:10-11 and Luke 10:17-18), and it is also mentioned several times elsewhere in the New Testament (in Acts, Ephesians and 1 Peter). When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard Jesus making this claim, they wanted to arrest Him, but let Him go for fear of the crowds who followed Him.
10. Psalm 139:13-14a says: "For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother's womb. I will give thanks to You, for ______________________;" (NASB text)

Answer: I am fearfully and wonderfully made;

A Psalm which tells how God knows each person even before they are conceived, and watches over the first steps in the formation of their body in the womb.
God, in this Psalm, is omniscient and omnipresent: He knows everything, even our secret thoughts, and He is everywhere; we cannot escape from His presence.
The Psalmist concludes that we should not try to escape God; it is better to allow God to make us pure.
