Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Complete the first verse of the first Psalm (New International Version): "Blessed is the man who ..."

Answer: does not walk in the counsel of the wicked

The verse continues: "...or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers." This Psalm is an encouragement to focus on "the law of the Lord" and talks about the benefits that that brings.
2. Which phrase completes Psalm 8:1 (New International Version)? "O Lord, our Lord,..."

Answer: how majestic is your name in all the earth!

This Psalm was written by King David expressing his wonder at the earth and skies. It also expresses his amazement at the fact that God cares for mankind, as people seem so insignificant when compared with the vastness of the universe.

Incidentally, the sentiments of the incorrect answers are also expressed at various points in the Psalms, even if not in those exact words.
3. Psalm 23:1 (New International Version) begins, "The Lord is my shepherd..." What does the psalmist say next?

Answer: I shall not be in want

Psalm 23 must be the most well-known and well-loved of all the Psalms. It was written by King David. He would have been an expert both in the art of being a good shepherd and the behaviour of sheep, as he looked after his father's sheep before he was anointed as king. Making sure that the sheep were never "in want" would be the ultimate goal of the shepherd.
4. Psalm 48:1 (New International Version) says, "Great is the Lord..." and what else?

Answer: most worthy of praise

This Psalm was written by the sons of Korah, who were a family of Levitical singers. It extols the beauty of the city of Zion and the greatness of the God who lives within that city.
5. What is/are the missing word(s) of Psalm 84:1 (New International Version)? "How lovely is your ____ O Lord Almighty!"

Answer: dwelling place

Psalm 84 was written by the Levitical singers, the Sons of Korah. Being Levites they would have spent the majority of their time in the temple worshipping God and leading others in worship. This Psalm talks about their love of being in the place where God is. I have to say that it's one of my favourite Psalms.
6. What will happen to "He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High", according to Psalm 91:1 (New International Version)?

Answer: (he) will rest in the shadow of the Almighty

This Psalm is my absolute favourite passage in the Bible. It talks about a God who protects and keeps safe, a God who brings peace even in the most difficult of circumstances. It contains some wonderful imagery of God being like a mother bird taking care of her chicks.
7. What does Psalm 92:1 (New International Version) say that it is good to do?

Answer: praise the Lord

This Psalm was a song written for the Sabbath day. It was an encouragement that, as people came together for worship, they should indeed praise the Lord! Incidentally, any of the incorrect answers might be an equally valid statement but none is not the one given at the beginning of this Psalm.
8. What is/are the missing word(s) from Psalm 108:1 (New International Version)? "My heart is ______ O God."

Answer: steadfast

In this Psalm, King David is encouraging himself to trust in God. He makes a statement of faith at the outset that that is what he is going to do, even though it seems that he is going through a difficult time. He reminds himself of who God is and what God is like.
9. Psalm 139:1 (New International Version) begins, "O Lord you have searched me..." What is the result of that searching?

Answer: and you know me

Psalm 139 was written by King David, putting down his thoughts and the realisation that there was nothing that God did not know about him, nothing that was in David's heart or mind that God couldn't see. Rather than finding this an embarrassing or threatening situation, David seems to be quite amazed by it and uses it as an inspiration to live in a way that is more pleasing to God.
10. Where or how does Psalm 150:1 tell us to praise the Lord, in the phrasing of the New International Version?

Answer: in his sanctuary

The final Psalm in the book is, in a nutshell, an encouragement for every living thing to praise God wherever they are, with whatever they have and for every reason they can think of!
