Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The book of Revelation started out as a letter to churches. According to Revelation 1:1, what was God's purpose for inspiring the letter?

Answer: To show His servants what will soon take place

Although many consider the book of Revelation a scary subject, because it has things that many people find hard to interpret and concerns the future, Revelation was actually meant to be a book of hope for God's people. Christians believe that God wanted his servants, churches, and people, to be aware that He would come back, expecting them to be ready.

He also wanted to comfort them of the evil times that were ahead, because many would suffer and some would die for their faith. He also includes the message of heaven, a wonderful place where no tears, sorrow, or death will be for the people that have served God faithfully. John wrote that whoever hear the words of this book and take to heart its words would be blessed. (Revelation 1:1-3)
2. Revelation was written by one of the last living apostles at that time. Where was John living, when he got in the Spirit on the Lord's day?

Answer: The isle of Patmos

John had been exiled to the isle of Patmos for his faith in Jesus. The isle was a place where many crazy people and criminals were sent. John had been boiled in oil, but it did not kill him. Finally he was banished to live among the criminals in hopes that he would die. In his circumstances though, John remained faithful to God and was communing with God, when God appeared and told him to write what he heard and saw.

John wrote in his letter to the churches, "I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. On the Lord's Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet, which said: "Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea." (Revelation 1:9-11)
3. In the book of Revelation, John wrote to seven churches. Some of the churches were praised for their faithfulness, while others were rebuked. Which church was rebuked for being lukewarm, because they were content and thought that they did not need anything?

Answer: Laodicea

God told the church in Laodicea that He knew their true deeds. They thought they were perfect just the way they were, but God saw that they had many faults. He told them, "I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm-neither hot nor cold-I am about to spit you out of my mouth. You say, 'I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.' But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked." (Revelation 3:14-22) God pleaded with them to change their ways because He loved them.

He said if they knocked, the door would be opened. He promised those who did what was right would have an eternal reward, as stated several times in the Gospels.
4. After John wrote to the churches, he was taken up by an angel to see a throne surrounded by a rainbow. What did the person look like that was seated on the throne, surrounded by 24 elders and creatures that cried "Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord God Almighty" day and night?

Answer: He had the appearance of jasper and ruby.

John was taken to heaven and saw a great throne with a rainbow encircling it. There were twenty four elders sitting on smaller thrones surrounding it and they had gold crowns on their heads. There were also four creatures. The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle.

They repeatedly sang praises to the One who sat on the throne. He had the appearance of jasper and ruby. He was so great, the elders laid their crowns by his feet and bowed before him, calling him "The Lord God Almighty". (Revelation 4)
5. John saw an angel with a scroll, and the angel asked who was worthy to open it. However no one on heaven or earth could open it and John began to weep. An elder told him not to cry, because who was worthy to open the scroll?

Answer: The Lion of the Tribe of Judah

The Lion of the Tribe of Judah, also known as "The Root of Jesse" and "The Lamb Slain", had been given all the power in heaven and in earth because He was the perfect sacrifice. He took the scroll from the One on the throne and the twenty four elders bowed before him.

They sang a new song saying, "You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God, persons from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth." The Lamb opened the scroll and the judgments on the earth began. (Revelation 5)
6. An angel told John to come and look. He saw terrible things happen on the earth as God tried to get people's attention. Which one of these objects did NOT precede the events that happened as God brought judgment upon the earth?

Answer: harps

The Lamb opened the seals of the scroll and terrible things began. John saw horses bring terrible events of death and famine upon the earth. Martyrs cried out to the Lamb for vengeance, while kings and people on earth fled for their lives. There was a great earthquake, the sun turned black like sackcloth, the whole moon turned blood red, and the stars in the sky fell to earth. The heavens faded away like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.

Later John heard the angels blow seven trumpets. The waters of the earth turned bitter and a third of them turned to blood. Fire fell from the sky like hail and darkness came. Other things happened that caused people to wish they were dead.

John also saw seven vials of the wrath of God poured out. They contained plagues that made people sick, caused lightning, earthquakes, and released demonic spirits into the earth.

However the people on earth did not repent when these things happened and blasphemed God. (Revelation 10-16)
7. The Antichrist and false prophet were two leaders that deceived the world and blasphemed against God. Their followers were imprinted with a special mark on their bodies. Where was it imprinted on the bodies of those who followed him?

Answer: on their right hand or forehead

The Antichrist was given power by the devil. The world was amazed by his actions and served him. He killed any one that stood for God and controlled all the nations. The false prophet also deceived the world and caused people to worship the Antichrist.

A special mark was placed on all the Antichrist's followers. They were given the choice to put the mark in their right hand or forehead. Anyone who did not have the mark could not buy or sell anything. (Revelation 13)
8. All the armies, leaders, and nations gathered to battle God and Israel. God appeared with the armies of heaven and defeated them. What happened to the Antichrist, the false prophet, and the devil, who had deceived the people on earth?

Answer: They were thrown into a fiery lake of burning sulfur.

The armies of earth gathered with the Antichrist, false prophet, and the devil for one last battle against God. The heavens were opened and God appeared riding on a white horse, with his eyes like fire, and a two edge sword coming out of his mouth. The armies of heaven rode behind him.

The Antichrist, false prophet were captured and thrown into the lake of fire. Their armies were killed and were eaten by wild birds. The devil was bound and then released for a short season. When the time he was allowed to destroy things on earth was over, he was also thrown into the lake of fire. (Revelation 19:19-21, Revelation 20:10)
9. John saw the Holy City descend from heaven. It was as clear as crystal and shone like a precious jewel. Nothing impure could enter into its gates. Who were the only people the city was reserved to be a home for?

Answer: people who had their names written in the Lamb's Book of Life

The dead were judged according to the Lamb's Book of Life. All people, great and unknown were called to stand before a white throne and were judged according to their deeds. The ones who had their names written in the Book of Life were rewarded with a home in the Holy City, where they lived without pain, tears, or sin for eternity. God was the light in the city and there was no night.

The ones who were not found in the Book of Life were sent to the lake of fire, where they suffered and burned for eternity. (Revelation 20:11-15)
10. At the end of the book, John issued a warning to the readers of Revelation. What would happen if someone changed or added to the words of the book?

Answer: They would be cursed for eternity by the plagues in the book.

John warned that anyone that added to the words that God had given would have the plagues written in Revelation added to their life. He also warned that anyone that took away from the book would lose their part of the tree of life and would never enter the Holy City. (Revelation 22:18-19)
