Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first incident of a chapter and verse having the same number is Genesis 1:1. (In other words, the number 1 identifies both the chapter and the verse.) Using the KJV, NKJV and the NIV -- as well as numerous other Bible translations -- what are the first three words in Genesis 1:1?

Answer: In the beginning

The first three words to Genesis 1:1 are 'In the beginning..." Not only does the KJV, the NKJV and the NIV start with the three words, but so do a long list of other translations.

The entire verse, in the NKJV, states, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." The NIV has exactly the same wording while the KJV is ever-so-slightly different. The verse in the KJV states God created "the heaven", rather that "the heavens".

Tradition holds the Book of Genesis was written by Moses.
2. Another incident in which a chapter and verse sharing the same number is Exodus 20:20. In the verse, a man is quoted as telling the Israelites, "Do not fear; for God has come to test you, and that His fear may be before you, so that you may not sin." What is the name of the man who told the people not to fear?

Answer: Moses

Moses is the correct answer. He made the statement to the Israelites after they had become extremely frightened when the glory of God descended on Mount Sinai. Exodus 20:18 explains things this way in the NKJV: "Now all the people witnessed the thunderings, the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood afar off."

Verse 19 goes on to state the people told Moses, "You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die."

In turn, Moses responded to the people, stating, "Do not fear; for God has come to test you, and that His fear may be before you, so that you may not sin."

Scripture goes on to tell of the people standing "far off" with Moses drawing near "the thick darkness where God was."
3. Ruth 2:2 is another incident in which the chapter and verse share the same number. In the verse, Ruth is quoted as asking Naomi for permission to go to a field and "glean heads of grain after him in whose sight I may find favor." In whose sight did Ruth intend to find favor?

Answer: Boaz

Ruth 2 tells of Ruth obtaining permission from her mother-in-law Naomi to glean heads of grain in the field of Boaz. Ruth, however, did much more than find favor in the eyes of Boaz. Scripture goes on to tell of Ruth and Boaz becoming husband and wife and the parents of Obed.

Ruth was a widow at the time she first met Boaz. She had been married to Naomi's son who died. However, no specifics are given about the cause of his death.
4. Esther 7:7 tells of a man standing before Queen Esther "pleading for his life, for he saw that evil was determined against him by the king." Who was pleading to Esther for his life?

Answer: Haman

Haman had no choice but to plead for his life after a heinous plan of his to kill all the Jews in the Persian empire was revealed by Esther to Ahasuerus, king of the empire. (In the NIV, Ahasuerus is known as Xerxes.)

Haman's pleading was in vain, however. Scripture goes on to tell of the king being infuriated and ordering Haman to be hanged on the gallows he had constructed for the purpose of hanging Esther's cousin Mordecai.
5. Psalm 119:119, in the NKJV, states, "You put away all the wicked of the earth like dross." Who is the verse in reference to?

Answer: God

The statement is in reference to God. To put the verse in context, here's how Pslam 119:118-120 reads in the NKJV:
"You reject all those who stray from Your statutes,
For their deceit is falsehood.
You put away all the wicked of the earth like dross;
Therefore I love Your testimonies.
My flesh trembles for fear of You,
And I am afraid of Your judgments."

Psalm 119 contains one hundred and seventy-six verses, making it the longest chapter in the Old and New Testaments. It is not known for certain who wrote Psalm 119, but scholars have speculated it was David, Ezra or Daniel.
6. The following verse, containing a missing word, is from John 1:1 in the NKJV: "In the beginning was the _____, and the ______ was with God, and the _______ was God." What is the missing word?

Answer: Word

Missing from the statement is 'Word'. In other words, the verse reads "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

John 1:2-5 goes on to state: "He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it."

The verses are in reference to Jesus and are used by many Christians to point out His divinity.
7. Acts 20:20 tells of a worker in the early church stating he "kept back nothing that was helpful, but proclaimed it to you, and taught you publicly and from house to house." What was the name of the church worker who made the statement?

Answer: Paul

Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, is the correct answer. The verse is part of a passage in which Paul exhorts the elders of the early church at Ephesus. In the order of appearance, Acts is the fifth book in the New Testament. The book was written by Luke and addressed to Theophilus.
8. Luke 15:15 is a verse from a parable told by Jesus. The verse, in the NKJV, states: "Then he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine." What is the name of the parable?

Answer: Parable of the Prodigal Son

The verse from Luke 15:15 is part of the Bible passage known as the Parable of the Prodigal Son, a favorite with Christians around the world. The parable tells of a young man moving to a foreign country and squandering all his wealth on a wild lifestyle, then, despite all his errors and shortcomings, being welcomed back home by his father with open arms.

The prodigal son's lowest point came when he got a job feeding swine and was so hungry he relished the food he was feeding to the pigs, as per Luke 15:15-16.

The parable is found in only the Gospel of Luke.
9. The following verse shares the same number as the chapter in which it is found: "And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world." In what New Testament book do you find such a verse?

Answer: 1 John 2:2

1 John 2:2 is the correct answer. For the record, there are no such verses as Romans 18:18, Acts 31:31 and 2 Timothy 19:19. Romans ends at 16:27, Acts ends at 28:31 and 2 Timothy ends at 4:22.

The Gospel of John as well as 1 John, 2 John and 3 John were written by John, one of the original Twelve Disciples. He was the brother of James.
10. The last case of a chapter and verse sharing the same number in the Christian Bible is Revelation 21:21. (Although Revelation has 22 chapters, there is no Revelation 22:22.) The verse in question is part of a passage that tells of the glory of a heavenly city. What is the city's name?

Answer: The New Jerusalem

Details about the New Jerusalem can be found in Revelation 21 and 22, the final two chapters of the Christian Bible.

Revelation 21:21 gives a glimpse of the glorious city John, the writer of Revelation, saw in his vision. The verse states there were twelve gates with twelve pearls and "each individual gate was of one pearl". The verse also states "the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass."
