Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Out of twenty-seven books in the New Testament, in what position does the Book of Revelation appear?

Answer: 27th

The Book of Revelation is the twenty-seventh, and the last book of the New Testament. Revelation, written by John of Patmos, is a complex book and there is no shortage of views about what the book is 'really saying'. In my opinion, the book is a tale of two cities -- Babylon the Fallen and the New Jerusalem. According to Revelation, Babylon faces a horrific future while residents of the New Jerusalem will have a glorious future.

The traditional belief is that the writer of the book was John, the brother of James, and one of the Twelve Disciples.

Some scholars, however, dispute this belief.
2. Out of twenty-seven books in the New Testament, in what position does Jude appear?

Answer: 26th

Jude is the second last book in the New Testament, appearing before the Book of Revelation. Jude consists of only one chapter and contains twenty-five verses. There are similarities between Jude and Second Peter and it appears one has borrowed from the other. However, it is impossible to determine which one borrowed from the other, most theologians agree.
3. Out of twenty-seven books in the New Testament, in what position does Second Timothy appear?

Answer: 16th

Second Timothy is the sixteenth book, in order of appearance, in the New Testament. It appears immediately after First Timothy and is followed by Titus. Timothy was a young worker in the early church who Paul apparently had a close relationship with. In fact, in different instances in Scripture, Paul refers to Timothy as his son.

It is believed Paul wrote Second Timothy shortly before he was executed in Rome. In the fourth chapter, he states a number of believers had deserted him and Luke was the only one with him at the time of the writing of the letter.
4. Out of twenty-seven books in the New Testament, in what position does Second John appear?

Answer: 24th

Second John is the twenty-fourth book of the New Testament. It is sandwiched between the Epistles of First John and Third John. Tradition holds the writer of the book was John, one of the original Twelve Disciples of Jesus. The epistle consists of only one chapter and contains twelve verses.

According to notes in the NKJV Study Bible, John wrote the epistle to counter false teachings which were becoming prevalent in the early church. Using the NKJV, the word truth appears five times in the first four verses.

In his epistle, John urges believers to cling to the truth: Jesus Christ came in the flesh.
5. Out of twenty-seven books in the New Testament, in what position does First John appear?

Answer: 23rd

First John is the twenty-third book in the New Testament. It appears immediately after Epistle of Second Peter and is followed by Second John. Tradition holds the epistle was written by John, one of the Twelve Disciples of Jesus. First John is a relatively small book, consisting of only five chapters. It is, however, considerably larger than the epistles of Second John and Third John which consist of only one chapter each.

In the book, John promotes fellowship, as per 1:3. However, for believers to have true fellowship, John writes that believers need to understand the true nature of God, as per 1:5, 2:29, 4:7-8.
6. Out of twenty-seven books in the New Testament, in what position does First Peter appear?

Answer: 21st

First Peter appears twenty-first in the New Testament. It is one of two books Peter, a member of the Twelve Disciples, is credited with writing. Some theologians challenge the view, stating the vocabulary and literary style of the book is much more advanced than that of an uneducated fisherman, according to notes in the NKJV Study Bible.

First Peter was addressed to members of the early church in Asia Minor, part of present-day Turkey. According to notes in the NKJV Study Bible, Peter wrote members of the early church to explain why suffering occurs and to remind them of their eternal reward.
7. Out of twenty-seven books in the New Testament, in what position does Second Peter appear?

Answer: 22nd

Second Peter appears twenty-second in the New Testament. Fittingly, it can be found immediately after the Epistle of First Peter and is followed by the Epistle of First John. Peter, one of the original Twelve Disciples of Jesus, is credited with being the author. Second Peter is a relatively small book, consisting of only three chapters.

In his epistle, Peter places emphases on holy living and refutes false teachings. Peter also states Christ is the source of knowledge and power for the attainment of spiritual maturity.
8. Out of twenty-seven books in the New Testament, in what position does James appear?

Answer: 20th

The Book of James is the twentieth book in the New Testament. Although the book is named after James, no one knows for sure who he was. Some believe the book was written by the half-brother of Jesus while others insist the brother of John was the author. Other possibilities are James, the son of Alphaeus and James the father of the apostle called Judas.

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible also state James was a common name in the days of the early church. The beginning sentence in the book in the NKJV says "James, a bondservant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ." With that claim, James could have been practically any Christian with such a name.
9. Out of twenty-seven books in the New Testament, in what position does Hebrews appear?

Answer: 19th

Hebrews is the nineteenth book in the New Testament. It appears immediately after Philemon and is followed by the Epistle of James.

Although Hebrews is a popular book in the New Testament, no one knows for certain who wrote it. Some theologians believe Paul was the author but many others strongly dispute the belief. According to notes in the NKJV Study Bible, strong cases have been made over the centuries for the likes of Apollos and Barnabas to be authors of Hebrews. Notes in the NKJV Study Bible also state scholar Adolf Harnack has suggested Priscilla is the author.

On top of uncertainty about the identity of the book's author, it is unknown when it was written. However, the general assumption is it was written prior to AD64, before Nero's persecution of Christians.
10. Out of twenty-seven books in the New Testament, in what position does the Book of Philemon appear?

Answer: 18th

The Book of Philemon is the eighteenth book of the New Testament. Out of the thirteen books the apostle Paul is traditionally credited with writing, Philemon is the shortest, consisting of twenty-five verses. Philemon was the owner of the runaway slave Onesimus and he lived in Colossae, in what is now part of Turkey.

After Onesimus ran away, he ended up in Rome where the apostle Paul converted him to Christianity. The tiny book of Philemon is a heart-felt request by Paul to Philemon to accept Onesimus back, not as a runaway slave, but as an equal in Christ.
11. Out of twenty-seven books in the New Testament, in what position does First Thessalonians appear?

Answer: 13th

The Book of First Thessalonians is the thirteenth book, in order of appearance, in the New Testament. It appears after Colossians and before Second Thessalonians. First Thessalonians was written by Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, and consists of five chapters. It is addressed to members of the early church at Thessalonica. In Biblical times, Thessalonica was a prominent seaport and the capital of the Roman province of Macedonia.

In his greeting to the Thessaloninans, Paul mentions the names of two of his fellow church workers -- Timothy and Sylvanus -- the Roman name of Silas.
12. Out of twenty-seven books in the New Testament, in what position does Second Thessalonians appear?

Answer: 14th

Second Thessalonians, in order of appearance, is the fourteenth book of the New Testament. Written by Paul, the book appears after First Thessalonians and before First Timothy. It is one of the smaller books in the Bible, consisting of three chapters.

The book is addressed to believers in the early church at Thessalonica. In the book, Paul counters false teachings which had surfaced.

According to Bibleplaces.com Thessalonica was situated at the intersection of two major Roman roads. One road led from Italy and the other road from the Danube River to the Aegean Sea. The modern city of Thessaloniki is the second largest city in Greece, surpassed by only Athens.
13. Out of twenty-seven books in the New Testament, in what position does the Book of First Timothy appear?

Answer: 15th

First Timothy is the fifteenth book, in order of appearance, in the New Testament. The book was written by Paul and addressed to Timothy, a young worker in the early church.

1 Timothy, 2 Timothy and Titus are often referred to as Paul's Pastoral Epistles.

Timothy's mother was Eunice and his grandmother was Lois, as per 2 Timothy 1:5. According to Acts 16:1, Timothy was from Lystra and his mother was Jewish while his unnamed father was Greek.
14. Out of twenty-seven books in the New Testament, in what position does Third John appear?

Answer: 25th

The Epistle of Third John is the twenty-fifth book in the New Testament. Fittingly, it immediately follows the Epistle of Second John and is followed by the Epistle of Jude. The epistle was written by John and tradition holds he was the same John who served as one of Jesus' Twelve Disciples. (Some modern day theologians dispute this fact.)

The Epistle of Third John was addressed to a Christian man called Gaius. Little is known about Gaius. Many theologians, however, believe he was likely a member of one of the churches in Asia Minor. Notes in the NKJV Study Bible suggest Gaius had the resources to show hospitality to itinerant preachers.

The epistle consists of only one chapter and contains fourteen verses. As quiz player dg-dave points out, depending on the translation used, Third John is the shortest by number of words, even though Second John has one fewer verse. In other words, it's the shortest book in the New Testament.
15. Out of twenty-seven books in the New Testament, in what position does Titus appear?

Answer: 17th

Titus is the seventeenth book, in order of appearance, in the New Testament. Titus appears immediately after 2 Timothy and is followed by Philemon. The book was written by Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, and addressed to Titus, a worker in the early church who served on the island of Crete.
