Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There's a lot of debate about which Gospels were written when. The modern scholarly consensus has the earliest Gospel probably being written around 68 AD; which one was it?

Answer: Mark

It is fairly generally accepted that Mark was the earliest of the Gospels to be written and it is thought that he based his gospel on Peter's account of Jesus' life. It is also the shortest of the gospels. Matthew and Luke were written later and the writers probably used some of Mark's material and/or a common outside source, as there are many similar passages which occur in both or all three of these gospels.

It is generally believed that John was written some time later, perhaps towards the end of the first century AD.

There are many differences between John and the other three gospels.
2. Who was the first King of Israel?

Answer: Saul

David was Israel's second King and was chosen by God because of Saul's disobedience. Solomon was David's son. Nebuchadnezzar was King of Babylon in the time of Daniel.
3. Jesus' first miracle was the turning of water into wine.

Answer: True

This story is told in John Chapter 2. The wine from this miracle was regarded by the hosts at the wedding feast as better than that which they provided.
4. Where were the disciples first called 'Christians'?

Answer: Antioch

Acts 11:26 The disciples were first called Christians at Antioch. 'Christian' means 'follower of Christ'. At first they were regarded as a Jewish sect, rather than a separate religious group.
5. Who was the first person to see Jesus alive after his resurrection?

Answer: Mary Magdalene

See John 20 10-18. Peter and John are also recorded as having visited the empty tomb, but according to the Gospel accounts, they did not see Jesus.
6. Who, according to the Book of Acts, was the first Christian martyr?

Answer: Stephen

See Acts Chapter 7 54-60. Peter and Paul were also martyred for their faith under the later persecution by the Emperor Nero. It is believed that John died naturally after writing the book of Revelation as an old man.
7. Who was the first murder victim in the Bible?

Answer: Abel

See Genesis Chapter 4. Cain was of course the first murderer.
8. What was created on the first day, in the Genesis account of Creation?

Answer: Heaven and Earth

See Genesis Chapter 1. Fish and birds were created on the fifth day (v20-23). Plants were created on the third day (v11-13) and the Sun and Moon were created on the fourth day (v14-19).
9. Who were the first people to visit the newborn Jesus?

Answer: the shepherds

The angels appeared to shepherds in the fields, telling them the good news (Luke 2 8-20). The kings also came to visit Jesus (Matthew 2 1-12), but according to scholars, he may have been up to 2 years old by the time they arrived. That's why Herod ordered all babies under the age of 2 to be killed (Matthew 2 13-18).
10. A harder one to finish. Who was criticised by John in one of his letters because 'he loves to be first'?

Answer: Diotrephes

See 3 John 9. The letter was written to Gaius. Demetrius is also mentioned but is praised by John, unlike Diotrephes. Barnabas accompanied Paul on some of his missionary journeys. His name means 'son of consolation'.
