Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Find the match for Adam. (Genesis 2:7 and 19)

Answer: First man

According to Scripture, Adam was the first man and was created by God. Genesis 2:19 states Adam was given the task of naming all living creatures. The verse in the NKJV states: "Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name."

The Website Behindthename.com reports Adam means 'man' in Hebrew.
2. Find the match for Eve. (Genesis 2:21-22 and 3:20)

Answer: First woman

Eve, of course, was the first woman, according to Scripture. Genesis 2:21-22 states God took a rib from Adam, the first man, and created Eve. According to Genesis 3:20, Adam gave Eve her name because it means "the mother of all living."

Adam and Eve were the parents of Cain, Able and Seth as well as a number of other children who are not named. Genesis 5:4 states: "After he begot Seth, the days of Adam were eight hundred years; and he had sons and daughters."
3. Find the match for Cain. (Genesis 4:1-15)

Answer: First murderer

Cain killed his brother Abel and became the world's first murderer, according to Scripture. Genesis 4:1-15 states Cain was extremely jealous of Abel because his offerings were more pleasing to the LORD. After the killing, Scripture tells of Cain being exiled to the land of Nod.

Incidentally, details are given in Genesis 4 about the world's second murder. Verse 23 tells of Lamech informing his two wives Adah and Zillah that he he killed an unnamed man "for wounding me".
4. Find the match for Othniel. (Judges 3:9)

Answer: First judge

Othniel was the first judge of Israel. He was the younger brother of Caleb and his father was Kenash. His wife was Achsah. Judges 3:10-11, in the NKJV Bible, states: "The Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the LORD delivered Cushan-Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed over Cushan-Rishathaim. So the land had rest for forty years.

Then Othniel the son of Kenaz died."
5. Find the match for Saul. (1 Samuel 10:17-27)

Answer: First king of Israel

Saul was the first king of Israel. Samuel, the last judge of Israel, anointed him as king with details appearing in Chapters 9 and 10 of 1 Samuel.

1 Samuel 10:20-22 tells of the people coming together for the coronation of the new king and at the key moment Saul couldn't be found. According to Verse 22 in the NKJV, the LORD advised Saul could be found hidden among the equipment. Rather than use the word 'equipment', the NIV uses 'supplies'. (The Amplified Bible uses the word 'baggage'.)

Scripture records Samuel was strongly opposed to having a monarchy for Israel, but the overwhelming majority of the people wanted a king, so he had to concede defeat.
6. Find the match for Lamech. (Genesis 4:19)

Answer: First polygamist

Going by Scripture, Lamech was the first polygamist, with Genesis 4:19 stating he had two wives -- Adah and Zillah. Genesis 4:18 states Lamech was the son of Methushael.

Verses 20 and 21 in the NKJV gives these details about Lamech's family life: "And Adah bore Jabal. He was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock. His brother's name was Jubal. He was the father of all those who play the harp and flute. And as for Zillah, she also bore Tubal-Cain, an instructor of every craftsman in bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal-Cain was Naamah."

In addition to being the first polygamist in Scripture, Lamech was the second murderer after Cain. Genesis 4:23-24 states he killed an unnamed man for wounding him.
7. Find the match for Rachel. (Genesis 31:19)

Answer: First theft of property

Rachel is the correct answer. According to Scripture, she stole the household gods of her father Laban, as per the 31st chapter of Genesis. Verse 19 tells of Rachel stealing the household gods after her husband Jacob had a quarrel with her father. As a result, she has the distinction of being the first person ve to steal property in Scripture. (The very first thief would have to be Jacob who stole his brother Essau's birth rite.)

Verses 34-35, in the NIV Bible, tells what happened when Laban went looking for his missing items: "Now Rachel had taken the household gods and put them inside her camel's saddle and was sitting on them. Laban searched through everything in the tent but found nothing. Rachel said to her father, 'Don't be angry, my lord, that I cannot stand up in your presence; I'm having my period.' So he searched but could not find the household gods."

In the NKJV, Rachel is quoted as saying she cannot stand up "for the manner of women is with me".
8. Find the match for Miriam. (Exodus 15:20)

Answer: First prophetess

Miriam, the sister of Moses and Aaron, is the first woman identified as a prophetess in Scripture. According to Exodus 15:20 in the NKJV, Miriam was "the prophetess". (In the NIV, she is described as "the prophet".)

Other women in the Hebrew Bible, or the Old Testament of the English Bible, to have such a distinction are Deborah, the dynamic female judge of Israel (Judges 4:4), and the wife of Isaiah (Isaiah 8:3). Exodus 15:20 is the first mention of Miriam by name.
9. Find the match for Naamah. (Genesis 4:22)

Answer: First named daughter

According to Genesis 4:22, Naamah was the daughter of Lamech and Zillah and the sister of Tubal-Cain. The same verse reports Tubal-Cain was an "instructor of every craftsman in bronze and iron." There is no further mention of Naamah in Scripture.

One other woman in the Old Testament was also called Naamah. She was a wife of Solomon and she bore Rehoboam, who replaced Solomon as king, as per 1 Kings 14:21
10. Find the match for Tubal-Cain. (Genesis 4:22 in the NKJV and NIV, but not the KJV)

Answer: First hyphenated name

The first hyphenated name in Scripture, using the NKJV and the NIV, is Tubal-Cain. According to Genesis 4:22 in the NKJV, he was the son of Lamech and Zillah and was the "instructor of every craftsman in bronze and iron." The same verse reports he was a brother of Naamah who has the distinction of being the first daughter mentioned specifically by name in Scripture.

In the KJV, Tubal-Cain's name appears as one name without a hyphen.
