Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My mother had divine intervention at my conception and was the first Bible mom to have had this phenomenal experience. She was loved dearly by my father and was known as "the mother of nations!" Do you know the name of my venerable mom?

Answer: Sarah

Sarah at age ninety was told by a man of God that she would bear a son. The very thought made her to laugh: how could this be possible, she thought. Nine months later when the prediction was fulfilled, she named her son Isaac, meaning laughter! See Genesis 21:1-7 and Genesis 17:15-16.
2. My mother loved both of us twin boys but she loved me more than my brother. She showed me how I could deceive my father and so take away my brother's blessing. Do you know the name of my mom, who guided me to deception?

Answer: Rebekah

Rebekah loved her sons but she loved Jacob more than she did Esau. She wanted Jacob to have the blessing and so inherit his father's fortune, which was legally Esau's. The story is told in Genesis 27 of how she plotted and schemed to achieve her wish for her favorite son.

This of course caused her great distress in the long run and dissent in the family circle. God, however, intervened and although both sons had hardships in their lives, they ended up doing pretty well for themselves. "All's well that ends well."
3. Our mother was a faithful follower of Christ -- even to Golgotha she followed Him. She influenced us with her Christian beliefs and we too became His followers. We are known as James and John, sons of Zebedee, but do you know the name of our righteous mother?

Answer: Salome

Salome wished the best for her sons here on earth and in heaven. She once asked Jesus to allow her sons to sit, one at His right hand and the other at His left, in His kingdom (Matthew 20:21). Salome was one of the women who looked out for Jesus and remained faithful unto his death.

When He was on the cross, He entrusted his mother into John's care and James was the first apostle to be martyred. This "not so well-known" mother is well worthy of being mentioned on Mother's Day, for the influence she had on her sons.
4. Not much is mentioned about these two women as mothers but the fame they have obtained as being the most wonderful mother-in-law and the most loving daughter-in-law would suggest that they had great parenting skills. Do you know the names of these two famous mothers?

Answer: Ruth and Naomi

Ruth and Naomi are well known for the love they shared. Naomi's two sons (one was the husband of Ruth) passed away in Moab and Ruth, her daughter-in-law, went back to Bethlehem with her. When Ruth re-married and had a son, she placed him in Naomi's care and the women of the village told her that Ruth was better to her than seven sons because she loved her and gave her a son. The child's name was Obed and he grew up to become the grandfather of King David. What a blessed pair!
(Ruth 4:13-17)
5. My mom was the only named woman in the Bible who died in childbirth. I was told that she was very beautiful and that my father loved her most of all. Do you know the name of my mother, for whom this joyous occasion (my birth) ended tragically?

Answer: Rachel

Genesis 29:17-20; 30:20-24 and 35:16-19 state that Rachel, Jacob's second wife was beautiful and that he loved her more than Leah his first wife. Leah was fruitful and gave Jacob many sons and one daughter. Rachel, on the other hand, was barren. Finally God answered Rachel's prayer and she gave birth to a son called Joseph. Jacob loved him to death and gave him a coat of many colors, as a token of his love.

She conceived again but died in childbirth. She named her son Ben-Oni, meaning son of my sorrow! But his father called him Benjamin, meaning son of my happiness. Both Rachel and Leah (along with their handmaidens Bilhah and Zilpah) deserve to be mentioned on Mothers' Day.
6. I am known as the wicked queen Athaliah but if you knew the name of my mother, you would say that I was a chip off of the old block! The prophet must have been referring to us when he said, "Like mother, like daughter." Do you know the name of my mother, whose wickedness brought her fame?

Answer: Jezebel

Not all mothers have positive influences on their children, not even royal mothers like Jezebel. She is known throughout the world for her wicked actions, and even today, some refer to certain types of behavior as the "Jezebel spirit." Examples are a controlling nature or sexual immorality, etc.

Her daughter Athaliah followed in her footsteps and caused many to grieve. The following texts give an insight into some of their wicked deeds: 1 Kings 16:30-31; 1 Kings 16; 2 Kings 8: 25-27; 9: 7-10, 22-35; 11: 1-3; 2 Chronicles 21, 22 and 23; Revelation 2:20-22.
7. In an effort to save my life, my biological mother placed me in a basket and sent me sailing down the Nile. Along came a princess of Egypt, who drew me out of the water and adopted me. Do you know the names of these two women whom I called mother? One was a slave and the other a princess whose name is known only from tradition.

Answer: Jochebed and Bithiah

Pharaoh, king of Egypt, commanded the midwives to kill all Hebrew male babies. So Jochebed, the biological mother of Moses, sent him floating on the river, in the hope that someone would save him. As God would have it, the princess who rescued and adopted him was the daughter of the same king who made the decree to have him killed.

Some experts believe that the princess Bithiah mentioned in 1 Chronicles 4:18 is the same person mentioned in Exodus 2:1-10. Both mothers had a great influence on him: one raised him to be a king and the other taught him to be an advocate for the needy. With such exposure to the feelings of the rich and the poor, it isn't a wonder that God chose him to lead His children, the nation of Israel, out of bondage.
8. I am John the Baptist; my cousin was the most favored woman by God and He chose her to be part of His miracle. My mother was a close runner-up, as she too was chosen by God to be my mother. (I was the forerunner of Christ) Do you know the names of these two Godly mothers?

Answer: Mary and Elizabeth

Mary, the cousin of Elizabeth, was chosen by God to give birth to His son Jesus, through immaculate conception -- see the first two chapters of Luke. To date, no one else is known to have had the experience of a "virgin birth." Elizabeth was chosen to be the mother of John, the forerunner of His son Jesus, so she too was highly favored.

When these two "mothers to be" met, they must have had a most wonderful time speaking about their calling and how God had chosen them. What an honor it was for these two mothers.
9. My mother and grandmother were once complimented by Paul the apostle, for having an unshakable faith and for passing that same faith on to me. What were the names of these two faithful women, who influenced and guided me into becoming a man of true faith? See 1 and 2 Timothy if you're not sure.

Answer: Eunice and Lois

Eunice and Lois were Timothy's mother and grandmother respectively. They were women of God and their strong faith was so evident, it caused Paul the Apostle to remark that the genuine faith he saw in them was now being seen in Timothy
(2 Timothy 2:5). These two women taught him by their example to have faith in God.
10. My mother was known as "the mother of all living." She was the first mother to experience labor pains and the first to have one son kill his brother. She is also known to have been deceived by a serpent and to have disobeyed God. Do you know the name of my mother, who indeed was the first lady?

Answer: Eve

According to Genesis 2:20-24,3:16,20 and chapter 4, Eve was the only created woman and that name was given to her because she was to become the mother of all living. Genesis also tells the story of how her two sons had a dispute and one killed the other.

Her broken heart, however, was somewhat mended when she gave birth to another son and called him Seth, which means, "God has given me another son." This first mother disobeyed God and one of her punishments was pain during labor; even today some mothers blame her as the cause of their experience of painful childbirth.

In spite of all that has been said, Eve is still the first lady and mother of all living. This indeed was an honor for her.
