Example: What is the name of Jacob's twin brother?

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start with making sure you know what a cryptogram is. Let's get started: What city was known as "The City of David" in the Bible? YVGSOVSVN

Answer: Bethlehem

Bethlehem is called "The City of David" because that's where tradition says he came from. Twenty-eight generations after David, Joseph, a descendant of David, was told to go to Bethlehem for a census. He took his wife Mary, who was pregnant, and went to Bethlehem.

While they were there Mary gave birth to a baby boy and named him Jesus as the angel had told her to. The story of David's kingship begins with him being anointed King over Israel by Samuel in 1 Samuel 16 and ends with his death in 1 Kings 2. Jesus' birth can be found in Matthew 1 and Luke 1-2.
2. What is the name of the place where Jacob wrestled with God (NIV)? KVMRVO

Answer: Peniel

In Genesis 32, Jacob was on his way to see his brother Esau for the first time in 15 years. He sent his wives, their servants and all of their possessions across the ford of the Jabbok. He was there alone and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. When daybreak came around the man said "Let me go, for it is daybreak." But Jacob said he wouldn't let him go unless he blessed him. So the man asked Jacob what his name was and Jacob gave the answer.

The man said "Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.". Jacob asked the man what his name was and the man replied with "Why do you ask my name?" and then the man blessed Jacob there. Jacob called the place Peniel because he saw God face-to-face, yet his life was spared.
3. What nation was Nebuchadnezzar king of? YZYBOLM

Answer: Babylon

Nebuchadnezzar was the king of Babylon that brought the tribe of Judah into exile. Among those were Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, whom he threw into a fiery furnace after they refused to worship his giant statue, and Daniel, who interpreted the king's dreams before Nebuchadnezzar was banished and Belshazzar took the throne. Nebuchadnezzar's story can be found in Daniel 1-4.

The account of him taking Judah into exile can be found in 2 Kings 24:20-25:30.
4. Where were the Israelites -- all but Judah -- taken for exile? ZHHBIRZ

Answer: Assyria

2 Kings 17 introduces Hoshea as the last king of Israel. It says that he did evil in the eyes of the LORD like none of his predecessors. It then says that the king of Assyria noticed that Hoshea wasn't paying tribute to Assyria like he was supposed to. So he imprisoned Hoshea and took the nation of Israel into exile into Assyria.

It then says that this happened because the Israelites had disobeyed God. He told them time and time again to stop, but they didn't listen, so he punished them by handing them over to the Assyrians leaving only the tribe of Judah.
5. Paul's letter to what place describes the armor of God? VKSVHFH

Answer: Ephesus

The book of Ephesians is a letter that Paul wrote to the church in Ephesus. It talks about being made alive in Christ, living in the light that comes from God, being obedient, the armor of God, and several other topics. Many people believe he wrote it while he was in Rome in the year 62 AD.
6. The queen of what country visited Solomon to test his knowledge in 1 Kings 10? HSVYZ

Answer: Sheba

In 1 Kings 10 the queen of Sheba heard of Solomon's wisdom and so she decided to visit him to test him with hard questions. She arrived in Jerusalem and talked with Solomon about what she had heard, and asked him many hard questions. But none of them were too hard for Solomon to explain.

When she found that he was legitimate, she praised God for what he had done for Solomon. She then gave Solomon 120 talents (four and a half tons) of gold, large amounts of spices and some precious stones. Then she left and went back to her own country.
7. Where did Jesus go to raise Lazarus from the dead? YVGSZMB

Answer: Bethany

In John 11, Mary and her sister Martha sent word to Jesus asking him to come to Bethany and heal their brother Lazarus, who was very sick. But he stayed where he was for two more days, saying that it was God's will that he not heal him yet. Lazarus then died and Jesus went to Bethany to 'wake him up'.

When he arrived there Lazarus had been dead for four days so he went and comforted his sisters. Then he went to the tomb where Lazarus was buried and had people roll the stone away. He called into the tomb "Lazarus, come out!" and Lazarus came walking out of the tomb.

He then told those watching to take off Lazarus' grave clothes and free him.
8. What's the name of the mountain that Moses climbed to get the ten commandments? HRMZR

Answer: Sinai

In Exodus 19 the Israelites entered the desert of Sinai and stopped next to the mountain. Then the LORD descended onto Mount Sinai and told Moses to climb up the mountain to him. After he sent the Israelites and priests some instructions through Moses, he gave Moses the ten commandments. The rocks on which the commandments were inscribed were then placed in the ark of the covenant.
9. In John 4 Jesus met a woman at a well and told her everything about herself. Where was the woman from? HZNZIRZ

Answer: Samaria

In John 4 Jesus was going from Judea to Galilee and he had to go through Samaria. He stopped outside the city Sychar near Jacob's well to rest and sent his disciples to get food from the city. While he was there, a Samaritan woman came to the well to get some water. So they got to talking and Jesus told her everything about herself and then told her that he was the Christ.

She left and went back into the town, leaving her water jar at the well, and told everyone that she thought she'd found the Christ.

Many Samaritans went to the well. Jesus preached to them and they became believers.
10. There are two instances where Abram/Abraham went into a country and told the people there that Sarai/Sarah was his sister so they wouldn't kill him. Where did he do this for the first time? VTBKG

Answer: Egypt

The first time Abram did this, he went to live in Egypt because of the famine in the land. He told his wife to tell everyone that she was his sister instead of his wife. He did this because he was afraid that someone might kill him to get her. When Pharaoh heard about her and her beauty he took her into his palace and treated Abram well because of her.

But God inflicted diseases on Pharaoh and his household because of what he did. When Pharaoh learned that Sarai was Abram's wife and not his sister he sent for him.

He asked Abram why he did what he did and told Abram to take what was his and leave. This can be found in Genesis 12. The other time he did this can be found in Genesis 20.
