Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What Old Testament character coined the common expression 'Am I my brother's keeper?'

Answer: Cain

Cain, the son of Adam and Eve, is the correct answer. He became the world's first murderer when he killed his brother Abel out of jealousy. The question "am I my brother's keeper?" was asked by Cain in Genesis 4:9, when Scripture says God wanted to know the whereabouts of Abel. Cain's statement is often used to reflect the view no one should be responsible for the welfare of others.

However, the statement has also been turned around and has given birth to the term 'my brother's keeper'. The term 'my brother's keeper' has been incorporated into everything from the title of a movie to a Christian organization involved in helping the impoverished.
2. Out of 12 spies sent by Moses to survey the land of Canaan, only two came back with favorable reports. One of the spies was Joshua. What's the name of the second spy?

Answer: Caleb

Only Caleb and Joshua came back to Moses with promising reports about the land of Canaan. Scripture states the ten other spies who gave unfavorable reports died of a plague before the LORD. Caleb was the son of Jephunneh and he had a daughter named Achsah. In honor of Caleb, one of the districts of Judah was named after him.

The story of the twelve spies is told in Numbers 13 and 14.
3. What was the name of the Persian king who granted permission to the Israelites to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple of God?

Answer: Cyrus

Cyrus is the correct answer. His name appears a number of times in the Old Testament, but the account of his decision to liberate the Israelites is largely found in the book of Ezra. According to Scripture, Cyrus decided to grant permission to the Israelites to return to Jerusalem after his heart had been moved by the Lord. Cyrus was the head of the Persian empire and after he defeated the Babylonians, one of his first major decisions was to free the Israelites. According to Wikipedia, his empire extended from the Mediterranean sea and the Hellespont in the west to the Indus River in the east.

At that time, it was the largest empire the world had seen, Wikipedia reports.
4. Complete the missing word from Deuteronomy 31:6, in the NKJV Bible: "Be strong and of good ________, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you."

Answer: courage

The missing word is courage. According to the 31st chapter of Deuteronomy, the words were spoken by the LORD to Moses, who in turn passed the instructions on to the Israelites. Deuteronomy 31:7, for example, states Moses "summoned Joshua and said to him in the presence of all Israel, 'Be strong and courageous, for you must go with this people into the land that the LORD swore to their ancestors to give them, and you must divide it among them as their inheritance.

The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged'." Time and again the words 'courage' and 'courageous' are used in the Old Testament.
5. On which mountain did Elijah score his spectacular victory over 450 prophets of Baal?

Answer: Carmel

Mount Carmel was the location of Elijah's victory over the prophets of Baal in 1 Kings 18. According to Scripture, Elijah and the prophets of Baal had a showdown to see who could call upon a higher power to ignite a sacrificial offering on Mount Carmel. The 450 prophets called on Baal and Elijah called on the Lord with Elijah being the clear winner, according to Scripture.

Carmel was such a lovely place that Solomon even compares the beauty of a bride to it. Song of Solomon 7:5, in the NIV Bible, states: "Your head crowns you like Mount Carmel. Your hair is like royal tapestry; the king is held captive by its tresses."
6. When you exclude the numbers at the beginning (i.e. 1 Chronicles and 2 Chronicles count as two) how many books in the Old Testament and the New Testament start with the letter 'C'?

Answer: 5

Five books in the Old Testament and the New Testament start with the letter C. They are 1 Chronicles, 2 Chronicles, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians and Colossians. 1 and 2 Chronicles are both found in the Old Testament while 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians and Colossians are part of the New Testament. Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, is credited with writing the three books that start with the letter 'C' in the New Testament.
7. The vast majority of Christians believe Jesus was crucified on Calvary, yet the word is not necessarily accurate as it is simply an anglicized version of a Latin translation the real name of the site.

Answer: True

True. The correct name of the crucifixion site is Golgotha, or Place of the Skull. Calvary is a Western Christian name given to the crucifixion site. The following explanation is from Wikipedia: "When the King James Version was written, the translators used an anglicised version -- Calvary -- of the Latin gloss from the Vulgate (Calvariae), to refer to Golgotha in the Gospel of Luke, rather than translate it; subsequent uses of Calvary stem from this single translation decision."

In the KJV, you will find the word Calvary in Luke 23:33, but in Matthew 27:33 and Mark 15:22, the term is Golgotha, Place of the Skull. In the NIV, the term Calvary is not used.

(Grateful to FunTriiva editor Cellardoor in helping me to get to the bottom of this one. In other words, she doesn't get a 'C'. She gets an A+++.)
8. The 13th chapter of a particular book in the New Testament is regarded as the Love Chapter. Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, is credited with writing the book that was addressed to believers in a resurrected Jesus Christ who lived in a Greek city. What's the name of the community?

Answer: Corinth

The Love Chapter appears in 1 Corinthians 13, a book written by Paul to members of the early church in Corinth. The modern city of Corinth is situated about three kilometres, or two miles, from the ancient city of Corinth. The new city was created after the original community was destroyed by an earthquake in 1858, according to Wikipedia.

The new city is about 78 kilometres, or 48 miles, southwest of Athens, Wikipedia reports.
9. A Roman centurion was among the the first Gentile believers in a resurrected Jesus Christ. What was his name?

Answer: Cornelius

Cornelius was among the first Gentile believers in the early church. His story is told in the tenth chapter of Acts. According to Scripture, Cornelius was a centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment. Although centurions were the elite of a ruthless Roman killing machine, they are portrayed in remarkably good light in the New Testament.
10. According to Mark 15:21, from what community in northern Africa did the man come who was forced to carry the cross for Jesus to the crucifixion site?

Answer: Cyrene

Cyrene is the correct answer. According to Wikipedia, Cyrene was a community in northern Africa, near the present day village of Shahhat in Libya. According to Mark 15:21, Simon was the the father of Alexander and Rufus. Cyrene is also mentioned in Acts 2:10 with the second chapter telling of the arrival of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
