Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What Old Testament character is linked with Nineveh?

Answer: Jonah

The correct answer is Jonah, the man who was swallowed by a huge fish or whale only to be regurgitated onto dry land after surviving three days and three nights in its stomach, according to Scripture. After surviving his ordeal in the whale's (or fish's) stomach, Jonah agreed to go to Nineveh, the place the LORD wanted him to go all along. According to the book of Jonah, the LORD told him to go to Nineveh and "preach against it" because of its wickedness.

His story is one of the best known in the Old Testament. Wikipedia states Nineveh "was an ancient city on the eastern bank of the Tigris River in ancient Assyria.

Its ruins are across the river from the modern-day major city of Mosul, in the Ninawa Governorate of Iraq."
2. While in the middle of an intensive battle with the Amorites, who prayed to God for the sun and moon to stand still and, according to Scripture, had his prayers answered?

Answer: Joshua

The account of the sun and moon standing still can be found in the 10th chapter of Joshua. While in the middle of an intensive battle with the Amorites, Joshua prayed to God the sun and moon would stay put, Scripture states. Some people believe Joshua asked for the extra daylight so the enemies would not overpower his forces at night. Joshua 10:12-14, in the NIV Bible states: "On the day the LORD gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the LORD in the presence of Israel: 'Sun, stand still over Gibeon, and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.' So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies, as it is written in the Book of Jashar. The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the LORD listened to a human being. Surely the LORD was fighting for Israel!"

It's interesting to note that Snopes.com reports there's a false rumor making the rounds that NASA scientists have discovered a "missing day" which corresponds with the sun standing still in the 10th chapter of Joshua. However, Snopes.com goes on to report there is no way of proving, or disproving, if the sun actually stood still some time ago.
3. Who was married to Leah and Rachel?

Answer: Jacob

Jacob is the correct answer. He was the second son of Isaac and Rebecca and the grandson of Abraham and Sarah, and (like them) a major player in the Book of Genesis. Jacob was a twin with his brother being Esau. His wives, Leah and Rachel, were sisters, the daughters of Laban. With his two wives and two concubines -- Bilhah and Zilpah -- Jacob had twelve sons and one daughter - Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Zebulun, Issachar, Dan, Gad, Asher, Naphtali, Joseph, Benjamin and Dinah.

The sons were the start of the 12 Tribes of Israel.
4. According to Judges 10:3-5, who was the eighth judge of Israel?

Answer: Jair

Jair is the correct answer. According to the 10th chapter of Judges, Jair replaced Tola and led Israel for 22 years. The fourth verse states he had 30 sons who rode 30 donkeys and they controlled 30 towns in Gilead. When Jair died, he was buried in Kamon, as per Judges 10:5.

Jair is also the name of three other men in the Old Testament.
5. What was the name the prophet Nathan had for Solomon when he was born?

Answer: Jedidiah

Jedidiah is the correct answer. 2 Samuel 12:24-25, in the NKJV Bible, states: "Then David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in to her and lay with her. So she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. Now the LORD loved him, and He sent word by the hand of Nathan the prophet: So he called his name Jedidiah, because of the LORD." According to notes in the NKJV Study Bible, Jedidiah means "Beloved of the Lord."
6. What's the name of the city whose walls came tumbling down for the Israelites?

Answer: Jericho

The walls of Jericho came tumbling down, enabling the Israelites to easily conquer the city, according to the sixth chapter of Joshua.

Joshua 6:2-5, in the NIV Biblle, tells of the LORD giving instructions to Joshua on how to bring down the walls of Jericho: "Then the LORD said to Joshua, 'See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams' horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets. When you hear them sound a long blast on the trumpets, have the whole army give a loud shout; then the wall of the city will collapse and the army will go up, everyone straight in."

Sue enough, that's exactly what happened, according to Scripture. As documented in Joshua 6:17-25,, only Rahab the prostitute and her parents, as well as her brothers and sisters, were spared when the Israelites took possession of Jericho.
7. What woman is traditionally perceived as being the most wicked women in the Bible?

Answer: Jezebel

The correct answer is Jezebel. She is regarded by many as the most wicked woman in the Bible and according to the website Meaning-of-names.com, Jezebel means 'impure'. She is despised in Scripture because she convinced her husband Ahab to worship false gods and persecuted God's prophets.

Her life ended when she was thrown out of a window by her aids and she was trampled by horses, as per 2 Kings 9:30-37.
8. What was the name of the man who had his 12-year-old daughter raised from the dead by Jesus?

Answer: Jairus

Jairus was the father of the girl who was raised from the dead by Jesus, according to Mark 5:21-43 and Luke 8:40-56. Scripture states he was a synagogue ruler. The account of his daughter being raised from the dead is one of most popular in the New Testament.

In the accounts in Mark and Luke, it tells of people weeping for the dead girl outside her home. When Jesus appeared and stated the girl was not dead but was simply sleeping, the 'mourners' laughed at him. A few moments later, however, their laughter turned to total amazement when Christ raised the girl from the dead.

According to Mark 5:41, Jesus said, "Little girl, I say to you, get up!" And she did just that! It's interesting to note that Jesus used almost the same words as when he raised the widow's son from the dead at Nain. In Luke 7:14 in the NIV Bible, Jesus said eight words to the widow's dead son: "Young man, I say to you, get up!"
9. Which one is described in the NIV as a brother of Jesus?

Answer: James

James is the correct answer. He was one of four brothers of Jesus, according to the NIV. Matthew 13:55-56, in the NIV Bible, states: "Isn't this the carpenter's son? Isn't his mother's name Mary, and aren't his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? Aren't all his sisters with us?"
10. According to Colossians 4:11, there was another person in the New Testament with the name Jesus.

Answer: True

Colossians 4:11 states that a church worker by the name of Jesus sent his greetings to believers at Colosse. His second name was Justus, but not much is known about him as he is mentioned in passing reference. Paul, who is credited with writing Colossians, does say Jesus, or Justus, is one of the few Jews who are part of his ministry preaching the message of a resurrected Christ.

And as FunTrivia member Ampelos points out, there are others who could qualify as being named Jesus. Here's the input received from Ampelos: "In Acts 13 we meet the 'magician' Elymas whose name in Hebrew is 'bar Jesus', that is 'son of Jesus'. Also 'Joshua' is the same name as 'Jesus' (and as 'Jason' in Greek, for that matter -- the root is 'healer'). So there are at least four in the New Testament. (Joshua is mentioned at Acts 7.45 and Hebrews 4.8.)
