Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Y is for Years. Methuselah was the oldest person in the Bible, living for 969 years, according to Genesis 5:27. However, another Bible character gave him a run for the money, living for 962 years. What's his name?

Answer: Jared

Jared is the correct answer. According to Genesis 5:20 Jared lived for 962 years. When it comes to longevity, Adam ranks right up there. According to Genesis 5:5, the world's first man was 930 years old when he died. Three other men who lived beyond 900 years were Seth, Kenan and Enosh. According to the fifth chapter of Genesis, Seth lived for 912 years, Kenan 910 years and Enosh 905 years.
2. No book in the Bible starts with the letter 'Y'. However, the first five books of the Bible, or the Old Testament, are known as the Pentateuch, and one of the books contains the letter 'Y' somewhere in the title. What's the name of the book that contains the letter 'Y' in its title?

Answer: Deuteronomy

Deuteronomy, of course, is the correct answer. It's one of the few books in the Bible with the letter 'Y' somewhere in its title. (In the New Testament, there are two books that contain the letter 'Y' somewhere in the title. The books are 1 Timothy and 2 Timothy.)
3. Y is for Yoke. The following verse, containing the word 'yoke', is from the NKJV Bible: "'Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light'." In what Gospel do you find this passage?

Answer: Matthew

The passage is from Matthew 11:28-30. The passage quotes Jesus and is a classic among many Christians. Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state the term 'you who labor and are heavy laden' describes the people of the day as "suffering under a load of religious responsibilities laid on them by priests, rabbis, scribes and Pharisees." The word 'rest' is relief from such a burden, the notes state.
4. Y is for 'Yes'. The following verse, containing the word 'yes', is from John 11:27 in the NIV Bible: "'Yes, Lord,' she replied, 'I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world'." Who was the speaker?

Answer: Martha

Martha, the sister of Mary and Lazarus, made the statement to Jesus. She made the comment just prior to Christ raising Lazarus from the dead, even though he had been dead for four days, according to John 11:39. Martha is remembered as the busy one of Lazarus' two sisters.

In Luke 10:38-42, for example, Martha expresses annoyance her sister Mary took time to listen to Jesus while she was left to do housework by herself.
5. Y is for You. The following verse, containing the word 'you', is from Genesis 4:6-7 in the NIV Bible and quotes God communicating with a man: "'Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.'" Who was the man who heard God say these words?

Answer: Cain

Cain is the correct answer. The communication had taken place just after Cain became the world's first murderer when he killed his brother Abel. It's in this chapter Cain issued the famous question, "Am I my brother's keeper?" Incidentally, the world's second murder is also recorded in the fourth chapter of Genesis.

It involves Lamech killing a "young man" for wounding him, as per Genesis 4:23.
6. Y is for Yearns. The following verse, containing the word 'yearns', is from the NIV Bible: "My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God." In what Old Testament book do you find this verse?

Answer: Psalm

The verse comes from Psalm 84:2. Psalm 84 is largely about the blessings of dwelling in the House of God. Similar to Psalms 42-49 as well as Psalms 85, 87 and 88, the Psalm is ascribed to the sons of Korah. The 10th verse in the 84th chapter is a classic: "For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God Than dwell in the tents of wickedness."
7. The following verse is from James 3:12 in the NKJV Bible: "Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Thus no spring ________ both salt water and fresh." What's the missing word?

Answer: yields

Obviously, the correct word is 'yields'. James 3:1-7 is largely about the "Untamable Tongue'. It's truly a chapter everyone can associate with as our tongues are continually getting us into trouble. Verses 3-5 offers this wisdom: "When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. Or take ships as an example.

Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark."
8. Y is for Yesterday. The following verse, containing the word 'yesterday,' is from Hebrews 13:8 in the NIV Bible: "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." Who was the writer of Hebrews?

Answer: No one knows for certain

There is much speculation about who wrote the book of Hebrews, but that's all it is -- speculation. The correct answer has to be 'no one knows for certain'. Yes, some scholars believe Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles wrote the book, but others strongly dispute such a belief. Some believe Barnabas wrote the book. Martin Luther speculated the writer was Apollos. Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state "scholar Adolf Harnack speculated the book was written by Priscilla, but the masculine participle in 11:32 probably rules that out."

On top of this, there is no certainty as to when the book was written, but many believe it was written before Nero's persecution of Christians in A.D. 64.
9. Y is for Young. What was the name of the young man who labored with the apostle Paul in the early church?

Answer: Timothy

Timothy, of course is the correct answer. In addition to being young, Timothy is known for being timid. Not much is known about Timothy, but according to 2 Timothy 1:5, his grandmother was Lois and in his mother was Eunice. According to Acts 16:1, Timothy's father was Greek and his mother Eunice was Greek. Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, apparently thought highly of Timothy and often described him as his son.

In 1 Corinthians 4:17, in the NIV Bible, Paul states: "For this reason I have sent to you Timothy, my son whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord.

He will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church."
10. Y is for Yellow. The following verse, containing the word 'yellow', is from the NIV Bible: "The horses and riders I saw in my vision looked like this: Their breastplates were fiery red, dark blue, and yellow as sulfur. The heads of the horses resembled the heads of lions, and out of their mouths came fire, smoke and sulfur." From what book in the Bible does this verse come from?

Answer: Revelation

The verse is from Revelation 9:17. Revelation is an extremely complex book and I don't intend to get involved in adding an explanation of this passage. However, here's some interesting trivia to share about the color 'yellow'. Revelation 9:17 is the only passage in the New Testament where the color is mentioned in the New Testament.

In the Old Testament, 'yellow' is mentioned three times in Leviticus and all three references are in the 13th chapter.
