Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lot traveled with Abram to the land of Canaan (and to Egypt, and then back to Canaan again) before choosing to live in the city of Sodom. What was his relation to Abram?

Answer: Nephew

Genesis 12:4,5 describe their departure: "So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran. He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Harran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there."

In 1 Peter 2:7, Peter describes Lot as "a righteous man, who was distressed by the depraved conduct of the lawless." When God condemned Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction, only Lot and his immediate family were spared (and then Lot's wife was turned to a pillar of salt when she looked back).
2. Isaac sent his son Jacob to find a wife from amongst his mother's relatives. He ended up marrying both Leah and Rachel, the daughters of whom?

Answer: Laban

In Genesis 28:1,2, Isaac gives his instructions to Jacob: "So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him. Then he commanded him: "Do not marry a Canaanite woman. Go at once to Paddan Aram, to the house of your mother's father Bethuel. Take a wife for yourself there, from among the daughters of Laban, your mother's brother.""

Laban would require Isaac to work for seven years before he would let him marry a daughter, then he made him marry the eldest (Leah), even though Isaac preferred Rachel. So, in order to also marry Rachel, Laban required an additional seven years of work.
3. The Levites were a tribe set apart for priestly duties, descended from Jacob's third son, Levi. Jacob had children from four different women, so who was Levi's mother?

Answer: His first wife Leah

Genesis 29:31-34 tells of Jacob's first three children with Leah:

"When the Lord saw that Leah was not loved, he enabled her to conceive, but Rachel remained childless. Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben, for she said, "It is because the Lord has seen my misery. Surely my husband will love me now."

She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, "Because the Lord heard that I am not loved, he gave me this one too." So she named him Simeon.

Again she conceived, and when she gave birth to a son she said, "Now at last my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons." So he was named Levi."

In Numbers chapter 1, Moses is commanded to take a census of the Israelites (specifically numbering who could serve in the army), but for the Levites he was given a different instruction (verses 49, 50):

"You must not count the tribe of Levi or include them in the census of the other Israelites. Instead, appoint the Levites to be in charge of the tabernacle of the covenant law - over all its furnishings and everything belonging to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; they are to take care of it and encamp around it."
4. Leprosy is mentioned a number of times in the bible, in both the Old and New Testaments. Who was the first person in the bible to show signs of leprosy, and was quickly healed of it?

Answer: Moses

In Exodus chapter 4, God explains to Moses how he will be able to show powerful signs to Pharaoh, first changing his staff to a snake and back again. The second sign he gives Moses is described in verses 6 to 8:

"Then the Lord said, "Put your hand inside your cloak." So Moses put his hand into his cloak, and when he took it out, the skin was leprous - it had become as white as snow.

"Now put it back into your cloak," he said. So Moses put his hand back into his cloak, and when he took it out, it was restored, like the rest of his flesh.

Then the Lord said, "If they do not believe you or pay attention to the first sign, they may believe the second.""

Miriam being struck with leprosy occurred in the book of Numbers. Namaan was cleansed of leprosy in 2 Kings, and King Uzziah died with it in 2 Chronicles.
5. Lions are fearsome creatures, and they are mentioned in scripture more than once. Which of these Old Testament figures did not kill a lion as part of their story?

Answer: Daniel

Daniel is famous for having survived a night in the lion's den, but he did not kill any of the lions. In the morning, King Darius came to see if he had survived the night, and Daniel (very alive), answered, "My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, Your Majesty." (Daniel 6:22)

In Judges 14:5-6 we find the story of Samson killing a lion: "Samson went down to Timnah together with his father and mother. As they approached the vineyards of Timnah, suddenly a young lion came roaring toward him. The Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him so that he tore the lion apart with his bare hands as he might have torn a young goat. But he told neither his father nor his mother what he had done."

In 1 Samuel 17:34-36 David recounts to King Saul his experiences as a shepherd: "But David said to Saul, "Your servant has been keeping his father's sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God.""

And a little later on, we are told of the skills of Benaiah (one of David's generals) in 2 Samuel 23:20: "Benaiah son of Jehoiada, a valiant fighter from Kabzeel, performed great exploits. He struck down Moab's two mightiest warriors. He also went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion."
6. Luke (the Evangelist) was one of the authors of the four canonical gospels. Which other New Testament book is he credited with authoring?

Answer: Acts

Luke, of course, wrote the "Gospel According to Luke", the third of the gospels as they appear in the New Testament. He is also believed to be the author of the "Acts of the Apostles" (AKA the "Book of Acts" or just "Acts"), which outlines the birth of the Christian church and the beginnings of the spread of the message of the gospel to the Roman Empire.

While the author of Luke and Acts is never expressly mentioned in the bible, Church tradition (dating back to the 2nd century) names Luke as the likely author. Together, those two books comprise more than a quarter of the total text of the New Testament.

He is referred to in three different letters written by Paul, and thus is considered to have (likely) been one of Paul's disciples. Luke was also referred to as a physician, leading him (as Saint Luke the Evangelist) to be the patron saint of physicians (along with artists, bachelors, surgeons, students and butchers).
7. Lazarus, the brother of Mary and Martha, was raised from the dead by Jesus. Was his the first recorded resurrection in the bible?

Answer: No

The story of Lazarus' resurrection happened in the gospel of John (chapter 11), but there had been five before him.

The first was performed by Elijah (the widow of Zarepath's son) in 1 Kings 17:17-24.

Elisha raised the Shunammite woman's son from the dead in 2 Kings 4:18-37.

An Israelite man was resurrected after being thrown into Elisha's tomb and coming into contact with his bones (2 Kings 13:20-21).

Jesus healed the widow Nain's son in Luke 7:11-17, then he raised Jairus' daughter in Luke 8:49-56.

After Lazarus' resurrection and that of Jesus himself, Peter is recorded as having raised Tabitha from the dead (Acts 9:36-42) while Paul restored Eutychus to life in Acts 20:7-12.
8. Acts 16:13,14 says "On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there. One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira named _____, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul's message." Who was she?

Answer: Lydia

Lydia's conversion is the first (by a named person) recorded in the bible following Jesus' resurrection. She and her whole household were baptized, as seen in verse 15: "When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. 'If you consider me a believer in the Lord,' she said, 'come and stay at my house.' And she persuaded us."
9. In his greeting at the beginning of the book of Revelation, John (in verse 4) addresses it "To the seven churches in the province of Asia". Which of these was one of them?

Answer: Laodicea

John goes on (in verses 10 and 11) to describe his vision while in exile on the island of Patmos: "On the Lord's Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet, which said: "Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea.""

Unfortunately, what John had to say specifically to the church in Laodicea was not positive, as described in Revelation 3:14-16:

"To the angel of the church in Laodicea write:

These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God's creation. I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm - neither hot nor cold - I am about to spit you out of my mouth."
10. In Revelation 5:1,2 John described this scene: "Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals. And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, "Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?" What creature, described as having seven horns and seven eyes, was found worthy?

Answer: Lamb

The vision continued with more concern over who could possibly break the seals (verses 3-5):

"But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. Then one of the elders said to me, "Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals."

This described Jesus and his victory over death through his resurrection. But while the elder mentioned the "Lion of the tribe of Judah", this is what John saw next (verse 6):

"Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth."
