Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Perhaps one of the best known extra-marital liaisons in the Bible was that of King David and Bathsheba, wife of Uriah. However, what was the name of the man that David commanded to allow Uriah to die in battle?

Answer: Joab

Poor, trusting Uriah delivered the fatal written message to Joab himself. David ordered Joab, his military commander, to put Uriah in the hottest area of battle, then withdraw, leaving Uriah exposed to the brunt of it. Of course Uriah was slain and David then took Bathsheba as his wife. David's plot did not go unpunished.

The first child conceived by Bathsheba died soon after birth, but their second child, Solomon, became king after David. This passage is found in 2 Samuel 11 to 12:24.
2. The fruit didn't fall far from the tree. Even David's son, Amnon, committed an act of incest. What was the name of the girl involved?

Answer: Tamar

Right after the story of David and Bathsheba is the narrative regarding Amnon and his half-sister, Tamar. Amnon pretended to be ill and had Tamar bring him some food. When she brought it, Amnon forced himself on her. Tamar told her brother Absalom what happened and he plotted revenge. This story is in 2 Samuel 13.
3. Jacob's son, Judah, persuaded his son, Onan, to try to father a child by his widowed daughter-in-law, Tamar. Was Onan happy to do this?

Answer: no

In Biblical time it was a custom to marry the widow of one's childless brother to maintain his blood line. This is known as a levirate union. Onan displeased God by not consummating the union with his elder brother's wife and was struck dead. However, Tamar disguised herself as a prostitute and tricked Judah into fathering a child by her so the bloodline could continue.

It was through this line that Christians believe Jesus was descended. This story is found in Genesis 38.
4. Whom did Lot, nephew of Abraham, have intimacy with other than his wife?

Answer: his daughters

The daughter's motives were high-minded, though. Like Tamar in Genesis 38, they wanted to keep their father's blood line intact after their mother died escaping the destruction of Sodom. While they were living in a cave near Zoar, they made Lot intoxicated with wine on two consecutive nights, then slept with him. Each conceived and bore sons, Moab and Ben-ammi. Genesis 19: 29-38.
5. Which of these is not mentioned as having an indecent liaison in the Bible?

Answer: Joseph

Although Potiphar's wife attempted seducing Joesph, he resisted her and fled before the situation became more involved. (Genesis 39). Phinehas was the son of priest Eli and, with his brother Hophni, used their positions as spiritual leaders to cheat people and seduce women (Samuel 2:12-17, 22). Aholibah is an allegorical prostitute symbolizing the sinful way that Israel related to God.

This is found in Ezekiel:23. Shechem was a prince of the Hivites and saw Jacob's daughter, Dinah, and had intimacy with her, much to the displeasure of her brothers Simeon and Levi (Genesis 34).
6. Which woman did Jesus call out for claiming she had no husband although she was cohabiting at the time?

Answer: The Samaritan woman at the well

In this well-known passage, Jesus makes an impression on her because he reveals this to her and she then recognizes him as the Messiah. She runs back to the village and tells other people who met with Jesus and were converted into believers. (John 4).
7. What prophet was ordered by God to take a prostitute as a wife?

Answer: Hosea

This was meant as an allegory of Israel prostituting itself to false gods of the people around them. She later ran away and he had to find her and buy her back, foreshadowing the Messiah redeeming mankind from its sin. (Hosea 1:2-3 and 3:1-3).
8. Which judge of Israel was engaged to be married, but his fiancee was given to another man before they came together?

Answer: Samson

Samson was engaged to be married to a woman of Timnath, against his parents' wishes. At his bachelor party, Samson tried to trick the men with a riddle, but they used his fiancee to get the answer. Samson, in a rage, slew 30 men of Ashkelon to pay off the debt, after which her father would not allow Samson to visit her. (Judges 14).
9. How did Phinehas, grandson of Aaron, dispatch Zimri and Cozbi when he saw them in an illicit liaison, according to Numbers 25?

Answer: He stabbed them with a spear.

While the Israelites were wandering in the desert waiting to enter the promised land, they began to worship the idols of the indigenous cultures and to engage in prostitution. This so angered God that he sent a plague among the Israelites. In the meantime, Zimri, who was a prince of the tribe of Simeon, unabashedly brought a Midianite woman, Cozbi, into the Israelite camp. Phinehas took matters on himself and entered the tent of Zimri and stabbed the couple with a javelin (or spear).

This stopped the plague.
10. A well-known New Testament affair was between Herod Antipas and Herodias. Who was Herodias' first husband?

Answer: Philip

Herodias was first married to Philip, Antipas' own brother (Matthew 14:3, Mark 6:17, Luke 3:19). John the Baptist made vehement public statements against this relationship which ultimately led to his death. Herodias nagged Antipas to do away with John, but Antipas feared the prophet. Antipas was eventually tricked into beheading John by Herodias and her daughter by Philip.
