Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Matthew 1:23 quotes a prophesy made by one of the major prophets. Where can the same words be found in the Old Testament?

Answer: Isaiah 7:14

This is the verse in Isaiah in which Christians believe the birth of Jesus is prophesied. Isaiah 7:14 says, "Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel" (KJV). According to Matthew, the virgin of course refers to Jesus' mother Mary, whom many Christians believe was a virgin when she gave birth to Christ.
2. Matthew 2:6 says, "And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel." Where can a similar statement be found in the Old Testament?

Answer: Micah 5:2

The words in Micah 5:2 are, "But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting."

Again Christians believe that this is a prophesy of the coming of the Messiah, specifically Jesus.
3. In Matthew 3:3 the Bible says an old prophesy is about John the Baptist. Where did this prophecy appear in the Old Testament?

Answer: Isaiah 40:3

John the Baptist was Jesus' cousin and was born first, as the verse says, to "prepare the way of the Lord". Isaiah 40:3 says, "The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God."
4. In Matthew 4:4, Jesus quoted from the Old Testament when he said "Man shall not live by bread alone..." What Scripture was he quoting from?

Answer: Deuteronomy 8:3

This verse means that we need to have more than food (bread), we also need to feed ourselves spiritually. The Bible teaches that we can feed ourselves spiritually by reading the Bible, socializing with other like-minded people, and helping others who are less fortunate than we are.
5. In Matthew 5:31, Jesus quotes an old law regarding divorce. Where is this law found in the Old Testament?

Answer: Deuteronomy 24:1

Jesus quotes this verse but clarifies it saying that a man can not just divorce for any reason. He says divorce is only allowed in cases of adultery. It says in Deuteronomy 24:1, "When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house."
6. Jesus quoted from the Ten Commandments in Matthew 15:4. Where was this verse found in the Old Testament?

Answer: Exodus 20:12

The Commandment "Honor thy mother and father" is sometimes called the first commandment with a promise, as it tells us that if we honor our parents we will have long lives.
7. In Matthew 19:5, Jesus quoted the Old Testament regarding marriage. Where is this line about marriage found in the Old Testament?

Answer: Genesis 2:24

This is one of the verses that deals with marriage. It says in Genesis 2:24, "Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh." This is one of the verses used by Christians to promote traditional marriages as it mentions a husband and a wife.
8. Matthew 21:9 says, "And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest." Where can a similar statement be found in the Old Testament?

Answer: Psalm 118:26

In the Gospel of Matthew, the people cried "Hosanna" on what is now considered Palm Sunday. This was when Jesus made his triumphant entry into Jerusalem.
9. In Matthew 22:37, Jesus tells his listeners what the greatest commandment is. Where was this commandment found in the Old Testament?

Answer: Deuteronomy 6:5

It says in Deuteronomy 6:5, "And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might." Jesus further goes on to say the next greatest commandment is "Love thy neighbor as thyself." This can be found in Mark 12:31.
10. In Matthew 27:9, Christians believe another prophesy is fulfilled when Judas sells out Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. Where is that prophecy found in the Old Testament?

Answer: Zechariah 11:12

In the New Testament Judas is paid 30 pieces of silver to kiss Jesus on the cheek to let the authorities know which one He was. It says in Zechariah 11:12, "And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver."
