Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who asked Jesus this question: "Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?"

Answer: Thomas

The question was asked by Thomas, one of the original Twelve Disciples, as per John 14:5. According to Scripture, Thomas asked the question after Jesus said in His Father's house are many mansions and He was going there to prepare a place for the disciples. Jesus also said, "And where I go you know, and the way you know."

However, Thomas was confused by Christ's statement, saying, "Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?"

In Verse 6, Jesus makes the famous declaration to Thomas: "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."
2. Who asked Jesus this question: "I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?"

Answer: John the Baptist

The question was asked of Jesus by John the Baptist. Matthew 3:13-17 tells of Jesus approaching John the Baptist at the Jordan River and requesting to be baptized by him.

In response, John said, "I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?"

When Jesus told John to "permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness," he agreed to baptize Him.

The passage goes on to tell of Jesus being baptized and when He came up out of the water, the heavens were "opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him." Then a voice came from heaven, saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."
3. Who asked Jesus these questions: "Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?"

Answer: Peter

Matthew 18:21 tells of Peter, one of the original Twelve Disciples, asking the two questions of Jesus. In response, Jesus told Peter seven times is nowhere near the limit for forgiveness. "I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven," Jesus is quoted in the NKJV as telling Peter.

Scripture goes on to give an account of Jesus telling a parable about an unforgiving servant. See Matthew 18:23-35 for details of the parable.
4. Who asked Jesus this question: "Why do You speak to them in parables?"

Answer: The Disciples

Matthew 13:10 quotes the original Twelve Disciples of Jesus as asking Christ why He spoke in parables to the people. Christ's lengthy response is reported in Verses 11 to 17.

According to notes in the NKJV Study Bible, Jesus told a total of thirty-nine different parables to the people. Interestingly, the parables all appear in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. In other words, no parable is to be found in the Gospel of John.
5. Who asked Jesus this question: "Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread."

Answer: The Pharisees

The question was asked of Jesus by the Pharisees, as per Matthew 15:2. Because the disciples of Christ did not ceremonially wash their hands before eating bread, the Pharisees were upset because in their eyes a key custom was not being followed.

(It must be stressed the washing of hands had nothing to do with hygiene and everything to do with the following of ceremonial man-made customs.)

In response, Jesus told the Pharisees defilement comes from within and they were hypocrites. He also quoted from Isaiah to paint a picture of their hypocrisy.

See Matthew 15:1-20 for details.
6. Who asked Jesus these questions: "Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?"

Answer: The Samaritan woman at the well

The Samaritan woman at the well is the correct answer. The encounter between Jesus and the unnamed woman is found in John 4:1-26. It was during the encounter Jesus made the famous declaration, "whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life."

In Verse 26, Jesus goes on to inform the woman he was the much anticipated Messiah.
7. Who asked Jesus this question: "Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me."

Answer: Martha

Martha was busy preparing things for guests at her house when she saw her sister Mary sitting attentively at Jesus' feet listening to Him. Scripture states Martha was perturbed by what she saw and asked Jesus did He not care she was being left alone. She also told Jesus He should tell Mary to help her.

In response, Jesus replied: "Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her."

See Luke 10:38-42 for details.
8. Who asked Jesus this question: "Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?"

Answer: Judas Iscariot

Judas Iscariot asked the question of Jesus after expensive fragrant oil was used to anoint His feet, as per John 12:1-8. According to the passage, Mary, the sister of Lazarus and Martha, took a pound of "very costly oil of spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair." Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state the value of the fragrant oil was worth a year's wages for the average worker.

The passage also states Judas Iscariot was only interested in putting on a big show and had no interest in giving money to the poor. Verse 6 explains things this way in the NKJV: "This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it."

Verses 7 and 8 go on to quote Jesus' response to Judas: "Let her [Mary] alone; she has kept this for the day of My burial. For the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always."
9. Who asked Jesus this question: "Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will lay down my life for Your sake."

Answer: Peter

Peter, one of the original Twelve Disciples, asked the question of Jesus at the Last Supper after Christ had washed the disciples' feet. In addition to asking Jesus why he couldn't follow Him, Peter defiantly exclaimed he was willing to lay down his life for Christ.

When Peter said he was willing to die for Him, Jesus responded with a question and a statement: "Will you lay down your life for My sake? Most assuredly, I say to you, the rooster shall not crow till you have denied Me three times."

See John 13:36-38 for details.

Scripture goes on to tell of Peter denying even knowing Jesus three times and a rooster crowing after the third denial.
10. Who asked Jesus these questions: "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?"

Answer: Nicodemus

The two questions of Jesus were asked by Nicodemus, as per John 3:5. Nicodemus was a Pharisee who met with Jesus at night to find out more about the message He was preaching. As part of that conversation, Jesus told Nicodemus, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." The statement by Jesus prompted Nicodemus to ask the two questions featured in the answer.

It was during the conversation Jesus made the famous statement, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." The statement is found in John 3:16.
