Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the man who raped Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, in the hope that she would be given to him in marriage?

Answer: Shechem

This story is told in Genesis 34. Unfortunately for Shechem, his very unethical plan to win Dinah's hand in marriage backfired in a big way. Her brothers Simeon and Levi were so upset that they slaughtered all the men in Shechem's village.
2. Joseph's brothers became so jealous of their younger brother that they sold him as a slave to merchants from what group of people?

Answer: Ishmaelites

Joseph's brothers sold him to Ishmaelites in Genesis 37. They never expected him to rise from the rank of slave to second-in-command of Egypt. These treacherous brothers got their own taste of captivity in Genesis 42 when they ended up imprisoned by Joseph.
3. Pharaoh, king of Egypt, was unwilling to release Israel from slavery and suffered through ten terrible plagues as a result. Finally he agreed to release them, only to change his mind and pursue them once again. How many members of his army survived this encounter with Israel?

Answer: 0

The Egyptian army pursued Israel through the Red Sea, which swept back on the Egyptians after the Israelites were safely across. According to Exodus 14:28, the entire Egyptian army perished.
4. Not long after the great exodus from Egypt, Moses' brother and sister became jealous of their younger brother and grumbled against him. God heard this and was not happy about it. What was their punishment?

Answer: Miriam was afflicted with leprosy.

This story is told in Numbers 12. Although Miriam was afflicted with leprosy because she slandered her brother, she only had to suffer the resulting shame and isolation for seven days before she was healed and allowed to reenter the camp.
5. Samson married a Philistine woman. Her father apparently changed his mind about the match after the fact and married her off to another man. How did Samson respond when he learned of this betrayal?

Answer: He burned the Philistines' fields.

Samson went about his revenge by setting 300 foxes loose (in pairs) in the Philistines' fields with torches tied to their tails. The Philistines were so upset about this that they burned Samson's wife and father-in-law to death. The whole story is found in Judges 14-15.
6. What is the name of the Benjamite troublemaker who tried to turn Israel against King David?

Answer: Sheba

This story is related in II Samuel 20. David's loyal followers pursued the traitor to a place known as Abel Beth Maacah, where Sheba had apparently taken refuge. Unfortunately for him, a wise woman inside the town convinced the rest of the townspeople to behead Sheba.
7. As the prophet Elisha was heading to Bethel one day, some young men began to mock him. What did they call Elisha?

Answer: Baldhead

This story is told in II Kings 2:23-25. In response to the jeering, Elisha cursed the young men. Immediately, forty-two of these ruffians were mauled by two bears.
8. This powerful man hated Jews, particularly one Jew named Mordecai who refused to bow down to him, so he devised a plot to annihilate all Jews. Who was he?

Answer: Haman

Haman had devised a special punishment for Mordecai and was eagerly building a seventy-five foot tall gallows to hang him on. Unfortunately for Haman, his plan backfired and his life ended on this very gallows. Mordecai, meanwhile, went on to take over Haman's position as the king's adviser. The whole story is told in the book of Esther.
9. Many of King Darius' administrators hated Daniel and, knowing of his devotion to God, had the king publish a decree forbidding prayer to anyone but the king. The punishment for disobedience was a trip to the lions' den. For how many days was this decree to remain in effect?

Answer: 30

These evil administrators certainly meant for Daniel to die in the lions' den. After he miraculously survived his encounter with the lions, the men who plotted against him were eaten by the lions instead. The whole story can be found in Daniel 6.
10. Probably the most famous example of betrayal in the Bible is Judas' betrayal of Jesus with a kiss. What was Judas' reward for handing his friend over to enemies?

Answer: 30 silver coins

This betrayal certainly did not have the effects anyone expected. Judas was unable to live with himself and committed suicide (Matthew 27:1-10). Jesus, meanwhile, refused to stay in the grave and this changed the course of history.
