Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Elijah the Tishbite came before the King of Israel and prophesied that it would not rain for 3 1/2 years. Who was the king in Israel at this time?

Answer: Ahab

Ahab was King in Israel at this time (I Kings 17:1). He worshiped Baal and did more evil in the sight of the Lord than all the kings that were before him (I Kings 16:30-31).
2. The Lord sent Elijah to the Brook Cherith to hide after he prophesied that there would be no rain. He told Elijah to drink from the brook and that He would send these birds to feed him.

Answer: ravens

The Lord commanded the ravens to feed Elijah (I Kings 17:4). They brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening (I Kings 17:6).
3. Elijah was told by the Lord to go to Zarephath. There he found a widow gathering sticks. Elijah asked her for a little water and a morsel of bread. She told Elijah she had only a handful of flour and a little oil. She was going to prepare it for her and her son so they may eat it and what?

Answer: die

Because the widow only had a little flour and oil, she planned to make the last meal for herself and her son and was prepared to die (I Kings 17:8-12). Elijah told her not to fear, but to make him a small cake first. Because she did what he said, the bin of flour was not used up and the jar of oil did not run dry, and they "ate for many days" (I Kings 17:13-16).
4. The son of the widow in Zarephath became sick and died. When she told Elijah, he took the boy to the upper room where he was staying, stretched himself over him and prayed. The Lord answered and the boy came back to life. How many times did Elijah stretch himself over the boy?

Answer: 3

Elijah stretched himself over the boy three times. When he brought the boy to his mother, she then knew that Elijah was a man of God. (I Kings 17:17-22)
5. In the big showdown on Mount Carmel between God and Baal, Elijah and the prophets of Baal each offered a bull to their god. Whoever answered by fire was the real God. Which of the following did the prophets of Baal NOT do in their attempt to get Baal to answer?

Answer: pulled out their hair

The 450 prophets of Baal called upon their god, then leaped upon the altar, and finally cut themselves. They got no answer from their god (I Kings 18:23-29). Elijah had water poured on his altar and called on the Lord. Fire came down and consumed the bull, the altar, and the water. (I Kings 18:30-38)
6. After 3 1/2 years of no rain, Elijah went to the top of Mount Carmel. He sent his servant up seven times to look toward the sea. The servant saw nothing until the seventh time. What did the servant see the seventh time rising out of the sea?

Answer: a cloud as small as a man's hand

The seventh time, the servant saw "a cloud, as small as a man's hand, rising out of the sea" (I Kings 18:43-44). Soon, clouds filled the sky and there was a heavy downpour. (I Kings 18:45)
7. The king's wife threatened to kill Elijah, so he ran for his life and wanted to die. The angel of the Lord fed him, and he traveled for forty days and forty nights. When he came to Mount Horeb, he went in a cave. The Lord revealed Himself to Elijah through a series of events but was only in one event. Which one was it?

Answer: a still small voice

The Lord passed by and caused a strong wind, an earthquake, and a fire, but He was not in them. Then there was a still small voice, and Elijah came out and talked to the Lord (I Kings 19:11-14). The Lord then sent him to anoint new kings over Syria and Israel, and to anoint Elisha to take his place as prophet (I Kings 19:15-16).
8. The Lord sent Elijah to prophesy the deaths of the king of Israel and his family. What did Elijah say would happen to the king's wife when she died?

Answer: the dogs would eat her

Elijah prophesied that the "dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel" (I Kings 21:23). This was later fulfilled in II Kings 9:30-37.
9. When Ahaziah was king of Israel, he fell from his upper room and was injured. He sent his messengers to inquire of Baal-Zebub if he would recover, but Elijah met them and said Ahaziah shall surely die. Ahaziah wanted to seize him, but three times he had to send a different captain with their fifty men before Elijah came with them. What happened to the first two captains and their men?

Answer: a fire consumed them

The first two times Ahaziah sent a captain and his men, Elijah answered the captain, "If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men." Then fire came down and consumed them. (II Kings 1:9-12) The third captain pleaded with Elijah to spare his life.

The angel of the Lord told him to go, so Elijah went to Ahaziah. Again he told him that he shall surely die, and soon after, Ahaziah died. (II Kings 1:13-17)
10. When Elijah finished his work, he was taken up to the Lord in a whirlwind. How did he go up in the whirlwind?

Answer: nothing, it just took him up where he stood

Despite popular belief, Elijah did not ride the chariot of fire. A chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire and separated Elijah from Elisha. Elijah then went up in the whirlwind (II Kings 2:11) riding the winds. Elisha, Elijah's successor, saw it and received a double portion of Elijah's spirit (II Kings 2:9,10,12).
