Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Exodus 16:11-17 what did God send Moses and the Israelites to help them after they crossed the Red Sea?

Answer: manna and quail to feed upon

The people were starving, and God decided to show his love for them by sending them food to survive. Manna was a white-ish food that covered the ground each day except on the Sabbath. Each day manna was collected for that day only, except for the day before the Sabbath when it was collected for both days.

2. How far away was the returning Prodigal Son, when his father saw him and ran to meet him?

Answer: a long way off

The son was approaching from a long way off when his father rushed out to meet him. (See Luke 15:20.) Most Christians believe that this is a picture of God's love for humanity. When a person recognizes the wrong things that they have done and turns back to Him, then God, like the father of the prodigal son, welcomes them back with open arms.

3. What type of animals did God save Daniel from in the sixth chapter of the book of Daniel?

Answer: lions

Daniel was thrown into a den of lions because he worshipped God, but he placed his trust in God and God kept the lions from harming him by closing their mouths. King Darius of the Medean empire respected Daniel greatly, and resented the men who had backed him into the position of casting Daniel into the lion's den in the first place. After Daniel was released, Darius caused those men and their entire families to be fed to the lions, who were ravenously hungry.

4. In John, chapter 14, of the English Standard Version of the Bible, Jesus said that he was going to prepare a place for believers in Heaven and then come back for them. One of his disciples informed him that they didn't know where he was going and then asked him how they were to know the way. Which disciple presented this question to Jesus?

Answer: Thomas

Thomas was the disciple who asked this question; not Peter, James or John. Jesus replied to him in John 14:6 saying "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

Christians believe that after He was resurrected, Jesus ascended into Heaven and is now preparing a place for them -- and one day He will come back, just like He promised. Those who believe in Him will meet up with him in the air as stated in 1 Thessalonians 4:17-18: "Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. Therefore encourage one another with these words."

5. In Romans 8:38-39 (New International Version), there is a list of things that cannot separate believers from the love of God. Which two of these options are specifically included in this passage of scripture?

Answer: height and depth

Romans 8:38-39 in the New International Version (NIV) says, "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

The other choices cannot separate people from God's love either; they just aren't included in the list mentioned in the book of Romans. If everything in all creation was listed it would be a very, very long list.

6. In Luke 2:1-7 God sent Jesus to earth to save mankind. In what city in Israel was Jesus born?

Answer: Bethlehem

At the time of Jesus' birth a census was being taken throughout the Roman Empire, so Joseph and Mary had to go to Bethlehem because this was Joseph's hometown.

Christians feel that God and Jesus demonstrated their love for us by the act of God sending Jesus (whom they believe to be God's very own Son) into this world to die for the sins of mankind, thus opening the gateways to Heaven for humanity.

7. "Love your enemies". Now, that seems rather impossible, doesn't it? I mean, how can I love someone who makes fun of me, who resents me, or who tells lies about me, or maybe even just hates my guts for no reason at all? In which TWO New Testament books would we find this seemingly impossible-to-fulfill commandment?

Answer: Luke and Matthew

Originally, this precept was presented in the Old Testament book of Leviticus, but in the two New Testament texts of Matthew and Luke, the emphasis is on forgiveness and how to respond in love to those whom we perceive do us wrong.

The text in Luke 6:27-28 quotes Jesus as saying,

"But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you."

Later in the same chapter, in verses 35-36, He continues with this thought,

"But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful."

In Matthew 5:43-48 we read,

"Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect."

(I don't know about you, but I sometimes have difficulty with thinking about how to implement this concept. It is so much easier to see things with "natural" eyes than through "spiritual" eyes, and as a result I often fail to do the right things in the right way for the right reasons.)

8. In John 8: 2-11, the Pharisees brought a woman to Jesus, who according to the law of Moses, was to be stoned. Jesus told them that whichever one of them was without sin, might cast the first stone at her. Later on the woman told Jesus that none of them had stayed to condemn her, and His response was that He didn't condemn her either. What crime had the woman committed?

Answer: adultery

This story concerning the act of adultery demonstrates that no one has the right to condemn others because no one is perfect -- and that Jesus will forgive a person's sins, if he or she simply repents and asks for Him to.

9. "Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends." In which of the four gospels can this verse be found, as quoted from the English Standard Version?

Answer: John

This verse is located in John 15:13.

Christians believe that Jesus himself exercised this great love by taking every sin ever committed upon himself and dying in our place. They further believe that He took this action so that people could have the free gift of eternal life presented to them. In much Christian teaching, choosing this gift requires accepting Him as Savior.

10. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." Who spoke these words and to whom were they spoken, as recorded in what may possibly be the most quoted scripture in the Bible - John 3:16?

Answer: Jesus, speaking to Nicodemus

A member of the Jewish Sanhedrin approached Jesus one night, in an effort to understand what Jesus was all about. During the ensuing discourse between the two, Nicodemus was bewildered by Jesus' statement concerning rebirth for mankind. When he asked Jesus how someone could be "born again", Jesus explained to him the difference in natural birth and spiritual birth. Jesus then went on to expound further on the topic:

"Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?
Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?
And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD, THAT HE GAVE HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, THAT WHOSOEVER BELIEVETH IN HIM SHOULD NOT PERISH, BUT HAVE EVERLASTING LIFE.

For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil."
