Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following was not one of the four rivers associated with the Garden of Eden mentioned in Genesis 2?

Answer: Pharpar

The four rivers mentioned can give some information as to the location of the Garden of Eden. With the Pison, the Bible mentions that it compasses the land of Havilah and it is in a land of gold, onyx and bdellium (Genesis 2:11-12). The Gihon mentions the land of Ethiopia (Genesis 2:13).

The third river, Hiddekel (or Tigris) (Genesis 2:14), goes towards the east of Assyria and finally the Euphrates (Genesis 2:14) is a modern river.
2. According to Genesis 4:16, in what land did Cain dwell after he was cursed by God?

Answer: Nod

Nod is a land east of Eden and Nod means "Wandering". Wandering represents the state of man separated from God, aimlessly traveling through life.
3. During the great flood, how much time passed from the beginning of the rain until Noah removed the covering of the ark?

Answer: Less than 1 year

Genesis 7:11 indicates the day the rain started and Genesis 8:13 tells when Noah took off the covering from the ark. Genesis 8:14 tells when the earth was dry enough for the people and animals to leave the ark.
4. Name the three sons of Terah.

Answer: Abram, Nahor and Haran

Terah was the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran (Genesis 11:27). Lot was the son of Haran (Genesis 11:27), which makes him Abram's nephew. Haran died in Ur of the Chaldeans. Abram took Sarai for a wife. Terah took Abram, Sarai and Lot out of Ur and to the city of Haran. Ur was located 10 miles west of the Euphrates River. Excavations of the sites have been going on since 1854.
5. After Abraham almost offers Isaac as a sacrifice, he calls the place Jehovah-Jireh (Genesis 22:14). What does Jehovah-Jireh mean?

Answer: The Lord will see (or provide)

The location of the story is also Mount Moriah, which would be the future location of the temple in Jerusalem. Genesis 22:14 reads, "And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-Jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen (or provided)"
6. Sarah, Abraham's wife, died in Kirjath-arba (Genesis 23:2). Abraham then asked the people dwelling there to sell him the cave of Machpelah so that he could bury his wife. Who was the owner of the cave?

Answer: Ephron

Kirjath-arba is an older name of Hebron (Genesis 23:2). The sons of Heth (Genesis 23:5) were either Hittites or a people that spoke the Hittite language. In the future, this same cave would be the burial place for Abraham, Isaac, Rebekah, Leah and Jacob.
7. How many sons did Ishmael have?

Answer: twelve

They were Nebajoth, Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, Mishma, Dumah, Massa, Hadar, Tema, Jetur, Naphish and Kedemah (Genesis 25:13-15).
8. Leah paid Rachel to let Jacob to sleep with her. The payment was mandrakes that one of Leah's sons, Reuben, had found. Leah conceived on that night and gave the child a name that means "hire", since she had hired Jacob to sleep with her. What was the new child's name?

Answer: Issachar

The story is told in Genesis 30:14-18.

Genesis 35:23-26 gives the sons of Jacob and their mothers:

Leah had six sons: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun.
Rachel's handmaid Bilhah had two sons: Dan and Naphtali.
Leah's handmaid Zilpah had two sons: Gad and Asher.
Rachel had two sons: Joseph and Benjamin.
9. When Joseph let nine of his brothers return to Canaan, he held one as a pledge that they would return with Benjamin. Who was the one held?

Answer: Simeon

Joseph was testing the brothers to see if they had changed from the brothers that sold him into slavery. He sees the first change in their discussion as to why this was happening to them. The story is told in Genesis 42.
10. According to the King James Version, after Jacob's death, Joseph's brothers were fearful that he would retaliate. Joseph tried to reassure them in Genesis 50:19-20. "Fear not: for am I in the _____________ of God? But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive."

Answer: place

While Joseph didn't know or understand God's plan, he remained obedient throughout his life. Joseph recognized in the end why he went through the trials he did. Through his life he was able to save his family.
