Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first mention of the word 'help' in the NKJV Bible appears in Genesis 49:25, part of a passage by an elderly patriarch to his twelve sons. The verse in question states: "By the God of your father who will help you, And by the Almighty who will bless you With blessings of heaven above, Blessings of the deep that lies beneath, Blessings of the breasts and of the womb." Who made the statement?

Answer: Jacob

Jacob is the correct answer. The verse is part of a passage in which Jacob addresses his twelve sons and proceeds to bless them. The sons were Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Zebulun, Issachar, Dan, Gad, Asher, Naphtali, Joseph and Benjamin.

The chapter concludes by telling of Jacob's death and burial. Genesis 49:33 in the NKJV Bible states: "And when Jacob had finished commanding his sons, he drew his feet up into the bed and breathed his last, and was gathered to his people."
2. The following verses, containing the word 'help', are from one of the more popular Psalms: "I will lift up my eyes to the hills -- From whence comes my help? My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth." In what Psalm do you find these verses?

Answer: Psalm 121

The passage are the first two verses in Psalm 121, a favorite with Jews and Christians alike.

The Psalm, in its entirety from the NKJV, states:
"I will lift up my eyes to the hills --
From whence comes my help?
My help comes from the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth.
He will not allow your foot to be moved;
He who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, He who keeps Israel
Shall neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord is your keeper;
The Lord is your shade at your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day,
Nor the moon by night.
The Lord shall preserve you from all evil;
He shall preserve your soul.
The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in
From this time forth, and even forevermore."

Incidentally, there is no Psalm 151 in most Bibles. The book ends at Psalm 150.
3. According to Proverbs 28:17 in the NKJV a certain type of a person will flee into a pit and no one should offer any help. Who is the person who should not be helped?

Answer: One burdened with bloodshed.

The correct answer is 'one burdened with bloodshed'. The verse in question states: "A man burdened with bloodshed will flee into a pit; let no one help him."

Meanwhile, the NIV offers this translation: "Anyone tormented by the guilt of murder will seek refuge in the grave; let no one hold them back."

Solomon is credited with writing much of the book of Proverbs. (Agur is credited with writing Chapter 30 and Lemuel with 31:1-9.) Some theologians, however, believe someone other than Solomon wrote the first nine chapters of Proverbs.
4. One of the more popular verses in the Hebrew Bible, or the Old Testament of the English Bible, is this one containing the word 'help': "Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.'" In what book do you find this famous quote?

Answer: Isaiah

Isaiah is the correct answer with the verse being found in verse ten of the forty-first chapter. A common theme throughout the Hebrew Bible, or the Old Testament of the English Bible, is God telling the Israelites to "fear not".

Isaiah 41:5-6 tells of the fright of the pagans and this contrasts with what is said in verse 10.
5. Matthew 15:25 tells of an extremely determined woman making a request of Jesus. In the process, we have the first use of the word 'help' in the New Testament. The verse from the NKJV, states: "Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, 'Lord, help me!'" Who made the statement to Jesus?

Answer: Unnamed Gentile woman

The request was made by an unnamed Gentile woman. According to Matthew 15 she came to Jesus seeking help for her daughter who was demon possessed. It appears she was determined not to leave until she received help.

Here's how Matthew 15:21-28 explains things in the NKJV: "Then Jesus went out from there and departed to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, 'Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.' But He answered her not a word. And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, 'Send her away, for she cries out after us.' But He answered and said, 'I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.' Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, 'Lord, help me!' But He answered and said, 'It is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the little dogs.' And she said, 'Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters' table.' Then Jesus answered and said to her, 'O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.' And her daughter was healed from that very hour."

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state the passage explains that Christ's main commitment was to the people of Israel, who He described as 'lost sheep'. "Jesus would always give the Jews the first opportunity to accept Him as their Messiah," the notes explain.
6. According to New Testament Scripture, Jesus told a man "if you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes." To which the man responded, with tears, "Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!"

Answer: True

Yes such a statement was made. The man's confession to Jesus is recorded in Mark 9:23.

To put the verse in context, here's how Mark 9:17-24 reads in the NKJV: "Then one of the crowd answered and said, 'Teacher, I brought You my son, who has a mute spirit. And wherever it seizes him, it throws him down; he foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid. So I spoke to Your disciples, that they should cast it out, but they could not.' He answered him and said, 'O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him to Me.' Then they brought him to Him. And when he saw Him, immediately the spirit convulsed him, and he fell on the ground and wallowed, foaming at the mouth. So He asked his father, 'How long has this been happening to him?' And he said, 'From childhood. And often he has thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.' Jesus said to him, 'If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.' Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, 'Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!'"

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible suggest that although the man did certainly believe in Christ, he was at the same time nagged by "doubt and hopelessness."

There's happy ending in this Bible story as Scripture states the man got the help he requested and his son was liberated of the 'mute spirit'.
7. Luke 10:40, containing the word 'help', states in the NKJV: "But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, 'Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.'" What was the name of the sister Martha was talking about?

Answer: Mary

The correct answer is Mary. According to Scripture, Mary and Martha were the sisters of Lazarus and they lived in Bethany. The account of Mary and Martha and a visit by Jesus is one of the better known stories in the New Testament.

Mary would be best described as insightful while Martha would be described as industrious and irritable. The two sisters earned such a reputation as per the events in Luke 10:38-42. Scripture tells of Mary sitting at Jesus' feet listening to Him while Martha was busy preparing food for the guests. As a result, Martha became annoyed with the situation and requested Jesus to order her sister to lend a helping hand.

Luke 10:38-42, in the NKJV, reports things this way: "Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus' feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, 'Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.' And Jesus answered and said to her, 'Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.'"
8. Acts 16:9 tells of a worker in the early church having a vision in the night. According to Scripture, a man of Macedonia pleaded with him to "Come over to Macedonia and help us." Who had the vision?

Answer: Paul

Paul is the correct answer. Details about his vision are reported in Acts 16:6-10.
According to Scripture, Paul had the vision just after he met up with a young church worker named Timothy.

According to Scripture, Paul and his entourage sought "immediately" to go to Macedonia, concluding the Lord had called on them to preach to gospel there.
9. Philippians 4:3, containing the word 'help', reads this way in the NKJV: "And I urge you also, true companion, help these women who labored with me in the Gospel, with Clement also, and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the Book of Life." The women referred to in the verse were apparently at loggerheads at the church at Philippi. What are the names of the two women?

Answer: Euodia and Syntyche

Euodia and Syntyche may have been sisters in Christ, but they were not getting along. According to Scripture they were a bit like oil and water -- they didn't want to mix. This even though they both labored with Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles. However, little light is shed on the situation.

In Philippians 4:2-3, in the NKJV Bible, Paul writes: "I implore Euodia and I implore Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. And I urge you also, true companion, help these women who labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the Book of Life." Philippi is the same community in which Paul converted Lydia and her family as well as the jailer and his family to Christianity. Details of their conversion are found in Acts 16:11-40.
10. Hebrews 4:16, in the NKJV, is one of those 'comfort verses.' Containing the word 'help', the verse states: "Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need." Who is the author of Hebrews?

Answer: No one knows for certain

No one knows for certain is the correct answer. There are a number of theories about who wrote the book, but that's all they are -- theories. Some say Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, wrote Hebrews. Others, however, strongly disagree with such a view.

According to notes in the NKJV Study Bible, Martin Luther speculated the book was written by Apollos. Study notes also state Tertullian thought Barnabas wrote the book. Meanwhile, scholar Adolf Harnack suggested Priscilla could've been the author.

The 11th chapter of Hebrews is all about faith. The chapter pays tribute to a long list of people in the Old Testament who were stars for their faith. Names range from Abraham to Rahab the prostitute. Hebrews 11:6, in the NKJV, has this classic verse: "But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him."
