5. In what year did Noyes and his following adopt policies of "Mutual Criticism", "Complex Marriage" and "Male Continence"?

Answer: 1846

Noyes taught that the key to happiness was the suppression of selfishness. Mutual Criticism was where a person would sit and listen to everyone express their true thoughts on that person.

Before relocating to Oneida, NY, Noyes' group had been located in Putney VT. The community came under a lot of persecution for their beliefs in complex marriage and mutual criticism. Oneida was located in the burned over district, which was more tolerant.
