Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During which period in history did the Amish have their start?

Answer: The Reformation

A wide range of denominations and sects came into being in the aftermath of the Reformation. One of these were the Anabaptists, of which the Amish are a branch, becoming a distinct group near the end of the 17th century.
2. The Amish and the Mennonites are different names for the same group of people.

Answer: False

The Mennonites came out of the Reformation with their leader, Menno Simmons. Some people in this group disagreed with certain principles in the book of Matthew in the Bible. This group broke away from the Mennonites and, led by Jacob Amman, became the Amish. So the two groups have a common origin, but are not the same.
3. What is the most basic reason why the Amish reject technology?

Answer: The Bible tells them so.

The quotation from the Bible that they believe requires this is : "Be not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind that ye may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God." (Romans 12:2)
4. How many languages do most Amish people speak?

Answer: Three

They learn English at school, Pennsylvania Dutch (a dialect of German) at home, and High German when worshipping.
5. What will you NOT see on a married Amish man?

Answer: a mustache

Married Amish men grow beards after they are married. They also wear plain clothing and hats as to not stand out. Amish men never grow mustaches because they believe that mustaches are associated with the military and the Amish are non-resistant pacifists.
6. What will a traditional Amish woman NEVER wear?

Answer: a neon pink dress

Amish women do not wear bright colors. Again, they want to blend in and not attract attention. They wear colors such as dark blue and dark green. They never wear 'loud' colors such as neon pink. They wear caps over their hair to show their respect for God. They modestly wear their dresses down to mid calf. They also wear aprons to protect their dresses when cooking and cleaning.
7. The Old Order Amish are willing to ride in cars, but they don't drive them.

Answer: True

The Old Order Amish can ride in a car that a non-Amish person is driving. They do not own cars, however. This is because they believe there is a difference between "controlling technology" and "letting technology control them".
8. The Amish do use some modern technology.

Answer: True

They use refrigerators for sanitation reasons, they use gas powered lamps for light in their homes and barns, and they use hot water heaters.
9. When an Amish teenager turns a certain age, he or she is allowed to give up the Amish life and see what it is like in the outside world, at least temporarily. This is called "rumspringa", and it means "running around." What is the average age an Amish teen experiences this?

Answer: 16

The teen can dress however he or she likes, mix freely with non-Amish people, get an apartment, party, and do whatever they want. This is to test that the teen really wants to be Amish because if he or she is baptized after this period, there is no going back, and the Amish teen must stay Amish.
10. The Amish do not like to be photographed.

Answer: True

This is based on the second of the Ten Commandments: "Thou shalt not make unto thyself any graven image, or any likeness of anything that ... is in the earth...". Amish dolls do not have faces on them.
