Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. An angel told Joseph, "She (Mary) will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,..." (Matthew 1:21). Why does the text say that this name was chosen?

Answer: Because he would save his people from their sins

"She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." (Matthew 1:21)

Through the ages Israel had looked for the promised Messiah. Christians believe that Jesus was that Messiah, but many failed to recognize his coming because they were looking for a political savior that would save them from the tyranny of Roman rule. According to New Testament teaching Jesus came to save them from the true source of all bondage, Sin.

"Jesus replied, "Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin."
(John 8:34)
2. What does the New Testament book of Philippians say will happen in heaven and on earth and under the earth at the name of Jesus?

Answer: "Every knee shall bow ... every tongue confess"

"Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." (Philippians 2:9-11)

Many doubt the claims of Christ but according to this Bible passage there will be a time when all doubts will be removed.
3. "In his name the nations will put their ________." (Matthew 12:21) What word completes this scripture verse? (New International Version)

Answer: hope

The Old Testament teaches that the Jewish people had special covenant promises and blessing from God that other nations didn't have. Matthew had written his gospel primarily for Jewish believers, but he used this quote from the Old Testament book of Isaiah to show that it was God's intention that, in Jesus' name, people of all nations would be included in his covenant's blessings.
4. "Yet to all who did receive him (Jesus), to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to ________" (John 1:12). What right did John teach would be given to those who believed in Jesus' name, according to the NIV?

Answer: become the children of God

John teaches that Jesus' salvation not only frees his followers from the bondage of sin, but also that for those who believe in his name, this salvation will bring them into a family relationship with God as their father.
5. "In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you _____________ you ask in my name" (John 16:23). Which of these words or phrases completes the promise made in this NIV passage?

Answer: whatever

"Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete." (John 16:24)

Jesus made this promise to his disciples at the last supper the night before he was crucified.
6. "And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will _________ demons;..." (Mark 16:17). Which of these completes Jesus' teaching about what those who believed in him would do concerning demons?

Answer: drive out

Along with driving out demons, there were some other things Jesus told his disciples they would be able to do in his name.

"And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well." (Mark 16:17-18)
7. The first miracle performed "in the name of Jesus" (not by Jesus) was recorded in which New Testament book?

Answer: Acts

"Then Peter said, 'Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.' Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man's feet and ankles became strong." (Acts 3:6-7)

This is just one of the many miracles performed throughout the New Testament by those who believed in and used the name of Jesus.
8. The writer of the New Testament book of Hebrews begins the first chapter by telling us that Jesus was given a greater name than who or what?

Answer: Angels

"The Son (Jesus )radiates God's own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven. This shows that the Son is far greater than the angels, just as the name God gave him is greater than their names." (Hebrews 1:3-4)

The Book of Hebrews was probably written for Jewish people who had come to believe in Christ. It was written to encourage them to stand firm in their newfound faith and not be drawn back into Old Testament laws and traditions or fooled by tales of angelic visitations.
9. "...for, 'Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be _________'" (Romans 10:13). According to the NIV text, what will someone be who calls on the name of the Lord?

Answer: saved

Paul was a Jew but the New Testament says God had called him to preach the Gospel to the gentiles (non-Jewish people) One of Paul's challenges was to help Jewish believers understand that God's promise of salvation was for all men, not just for the Jews.

"For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile - the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him..." (Romans 10:12)
10. "Jesus Christ is the _______ yesterday and today and forever." (Hebrews 13:8) Complete the NIV verse.

Answer: same

"Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." (Hebrews 13:7-8)

It has been over 2000 years since these words were penned and many today still remember, believe and claim to receive the benefits associated with the name of Jesus.
