Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Find the match for James. (Matthew 4:21)

Answer: Son of Zebedee

James and his brother John, were the sons of Zebedee, according to Matthew 4:21. However, not much is known about Zebedee as he is mentioned in passing reference. According to Matthew 4:21, he was a fisherman, just like his sons James and John. Theologians believe his wife's name was Salome.
2. Find the match for Aquila. (Acts 18:1-3)

Answer: Met Paul in Corinth

Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, worked as a tentmaker with Aquila and Priscilla in Corinth where the two met up, according to the 18th chapter of Acts.
Acts 18:1-3, in the NIV, states: After this, "Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. There he met a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had ordered all Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to see them, and because he was a tentmaker as they were, he stayed and worked with them."
3. Find the match for Mary Magdalene. (Matthew 28:1-6)

Answer: Earthquake

According to Scripture, there was an earthquake when Mary Magdalene went to the tomb to anoint Jesus' body after the crucifixion.

Matthew 28:1-6, in the NKJV Bible, states: "Now after the Sabbath, as the first day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it. His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. And the guards shook for fear of him, and became like dead men. But the angel answered and said to the women, 'Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for He is risen, as He said'."

The term 'earthquake' is also used in the KJV and the NIV.
4. Find the match for Felix. (Acts 24:10)

Answer: Roman governor

Felix was the Roman governor of Judea who was replaced by Festus and kept Paul imprisoned in Caesarea for two years, as per Acts 24:27.

The 24th chapter of Acts is devoted to the trial of Paul before Felix with charges against him levied by the high priest Ananias. Arguing the case on behalf of Ananias and some of the elders was a lawyer named Tertullus. Paul appeared to be scoring major points in the trial. Acts 24:25, in the NIV Bible states things this way: "As Paul discoursed on righteousness, self-control and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and said, 'That's enough for now! You may leave. When I find it convenient, I will send for you.'"

It was all for naught, however, as Acts 24:27 states Felix wanted to grant a "favor to the Jews" and left Paul in prison for two more years.
5. Find the match for Paul. (Acts 9:3-9)

Answer: Temporary blindness

Paul, then known as Saul at the time, became temporary blind when, according to Scripture, he encountered Jesus on the road to Damascus.

Acts 9:3-9, in the NKJV Bible, states: "As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?' And he said, 'Who are You, Lord?' Then the Lord said, 'I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads.' So he, trembling and astonished, said, 'Lord, what do You want me to do?' Then the Lord said to him, 'Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.' And the men who journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice but seeing no one. Then Saul arose from the ground, and when his eyes were opened he saw no one. But they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. And he was three days without sight, and neither ate nor drank,"

Acts 9:17-18 reports about Ananias visiting Saul and restoring his sight. The two verses state: "And Ananias went his way and entered the house; and laying his hands on him he said, 'Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.' Immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he received his sight at once; and he arose and was baptized."

Paul would go on to become an unstoppable force, preaching the Gospel throughout present day Turkey and Europe.

Damascus is in southwestern Syria and, according to Wikipedia, it is the oldest continually inhabited city in the world.
6. Find the match for Julius. (Acts 27:1)

Answer: Centurion

Acts 27 tells of Paul being a prisoner sailing for Rome when a centurion named Julius showed kindness to the apostle during a stop in Sidon. According to Scripture, Julius allowed Paul to visit with his friends so they could provide for his needs. Acts 27:1 states Julius was a centurion in the Imperial Regiment. Sidon is on the Mediterranean coast and, according to Wikipedia, it is the third largest city in Lebanon.

It is about 25 miles south of Beirut and about 25 miles north of Tyre.
7. Find the match for Sosthenes. (Acts 18:17)

Answer: Synagogue ruler

According to Acts 18:17, Sosthenes was a Synagogue ruler who was beaten by an unruly mob in front of the court. The beating took place in front of Gallio, proconsul of Achaia, and according to verse 17, he showed "no concern whatever." There is no conclusive proof Sosthenes mentioned in Acts is the same person referred to by Paul in his salutations in 1 Corinthians. If it is the same person, he obviously had become a Christian after being a ruler of the synagogue.
8. Find the match for Peter. (Matthew 26:75)

Answer: Wept bitterly

According to Scripture, Peter wept bitterly after he denied knowing Christ on three different occasions just prior to His crucifixion. Peter's denials are reported in the 27th chapter of Matthew. After the third denial, a rooster crowed, just like Jesus predicted.

Matthew 26:75, in the NKJV, states: "And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him, 'Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.' So he went out and wept bitterly."
9. Find the match for Anna. (Luke 2:37)

Answer: Widow

According to the second chapter of Luke, Anna was the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher, and was of "great age" and a widow "of about 84 years". Luke 2:37, in the NKJV Bible, states Anna "did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day." After Jesus was presented as an infant at the temple by his parents Mary and Joseph, Scripture states Anna "gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem."
10. Find the match for Barnabas. (Acts 4:36)

Answer: Joses or Joseph

According to Acts 4:36 in the NKJV, Barnabas' original name was Joses and he was a Levite from Cyprus. (In the NIV, the name is given as Joseph.) However, the apostles opted to call him Barnabas, which means 'son of encouragement'. In addition to being an encouragement to others, Barnabas was a generous giver. Acts 4:37 states he sold a field he owned and "brought the money and put it at the apostles' feet".
