Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Find the match for Enoch. (Genesis 4:17)

Answer: First grandchild

Enoch is the first reported offspring of Adam and Eve's children. Enoch's name appears in Genesis 4:17, stating he was the son of Cain and his unnamed wife. The 18th verse goes on to state "to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech."
2. Find the match for Hophni. (1 Samuel 1:3)

Answer: Son of Eli

The death of Hophni is told in the fourth chapter of First Samuel, which also tells of the deaths of Hophni's brother Phinehas, his father Eli and his unnamed sister-in-law. Hophni and Phineas were killed in a battle with the Philistines at Ebenezer, where the enemy captured the Ark of God, according to Scripture.

1 Samuel 4:12-18 tells of Eli falling off his chair and breaking his neck before dying. According to Scripture, Eli fell off his chair after learning of the deaths of his two sons and the capture of the Ark of God. Meanwhile, the death of Phinehas' wife is told in 1 Samuel 4:18-22. Scripture states she died during childbirth. 1 Samuel 4:21-22, in the NIV Bible, states: "She named the boy Ichabod, saying, 'The Glory has departed from Israel' -- because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband. She said, 'The Glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured'."
3. Find the match for Ahasuerus in the NKJV and Xerxes in the NIV. (Esther 2:17)

Answer: Appointed Esther queen

King Ahasuerus (whom other translations name as Xerxes) is the one who deposed Queen Vashti and replaced her with Esther. Vashti fell out of favor very quickly after she spurned the king's request to put on her crown and appear before a gathering of people and nobles so they could see her immense beauty. According to Esther 1:1, Ahasuerus ruled over 127 provinces stretching from India to Ethiopia. (In the NIV, it states Cush, rather than Ethiopia.) The dumping of Vashti took place during the third year of his reign, as per Esther 1:3.

It would put things in motion for Esther to become queen and play a pivotal role in preventing the extermination of Jews in the immense area ruled by Ahasuerus. Of course, when Ahasuerus appointed Esther queen, he did not know she was a Jew.
4. Find the match for Orpah. (Ruth 1:2-4)

Answer: Ruth's sister-in-law

Orpah and Ruth were sisters-in-law. According to Scripture, the two women were married to Naomi's sons, Mahlon and Kilion. However, the two sons died about ten years after their marriages and their mother Naomi was a widow as her husband Elimelek had died, apparently before her two sons married. (Ruth 1:1-5) Ruth proved to be extremely loyal to Naomi even though Naomi suggested it would be best for the two women to return to their homeland. Ruth 1:16-17, in the NIV Bible, states: "But Ruth replied, 'Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me.'"
5. Find the match for Haman. (Esther 3:6)

Answer: Schemed to kill Jews

The evil man with the plan to exterminate all the Jews was Haman, as reported in the book of Esther. However, he was thwarted by Queen Esther and her cousin Mordecai. In a classic case of what goes around, comes around, Haman ended up being executed by hanging from the very gallows he had constructed for the execution of Mordecai. According to Wikipedia, Haman was a descendant of Agag, the king of the Amalekites, a people who were defeated by King David.
6. Find the match for Eliphaz. (Job 2:11)

Answer: Visited Job

Eliphaz the Temanite visited Job with Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite, as per Job 2:11. According to Wikipedia, Eliphaz probably means 'God of gold'. There was a fourth man, Elihu son of Barakel the Buzite, of the family of Ram. However, he is not mentioned in the arrival of the trio. His name first appears in Chapter 32 and he ends up being a major part of the dialogue.
7. Find the match for Potiphar. (Genesis 37:36)

Answer: Joseph's master

According to Genesis 37:36, Joseph was sold as a slave to Potiphar, one of the Pharaoh's officials and captain of the guard. Genesis 39:4 reports Potiphar liked Joseph and put him in charge of his household, entrusting to "his care everything he owned." Things would change dramatically, however, when Potiphar's wife falsely accused Joseph of attempted rape and he was tossed into prison.
8. Find the match for Kish. (1 Samuel 9:1-2)

Answer: Father of Saul

Kish was the father of Saul. Scripture states Kish was a Benjamite and he was the son of Abiel, who was the son of Zeror, who was the son of Bekorath. Bekorath was the son of Aphiah and the grandson of Benjamin. 1 Samuel 9:2, in the NKJV Bible, states Kish's son Saul "was choice and handsome" and "there was not a more handsome person than he among the children of Israel. From his shoulders upward he was taller than any of the people."
9. Find the match for Gideon. (Judges 6:30-32)

Answer: Given surname Jerubbaal

Gideon was given the name Jerubaal by his father Joash after he destroyed the altar of Baal, as per Judges 6:32 in the KJV and the NKJV. (In the NIV, the name is spelled Jerub-Baal.) According to the Website Christiananswers.net, Jerubbaal means "contender with Baal or, let Baal plead." The name Jerubbaal appears a number of different times in the Old Testament, notably in Judges 6:32, 7:1 and 8:29.
10. Find the match for Queen Esther. (Esther 2:7)

Answer: Hadassah

Hadassah is the original name of Queen Esther, as per Esther 2:7. The passage in the NIV Bible states: "And Mordecai had brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle's daughter, for she had neither father nor mother. The young woman was lovely and beautiful. When her father and mother died, Mordecai took her as his own daughter."

Esther, of course, would go on to play a key role in preventing the extermination of the Jews in the vast area ruled by the king known as Ahasuerus in the NKJV Bible and Xerxes in the NIV. The annual Jewish festival of Purim recalls the deliverance.
