Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first three questions deal with historical aspects of the gospels. According the "Oxford Bible Commentary" (edited by John Barton and John Muddiman, published in 2001), which is generally considered to be the first gospel written?

Answer: Mark

Most Biblical scholars date Mark at around 70 AD, with Matthew and Luke using this gospel as source material for their own narratives. John was most likely the last gospel written, usually dated around 90-100 AD.
2. Which gospel writer also wrote the book of Acts?

Answer: Luke

Both books are addressed to the same person, Theophilus, and are generally considered to be volumes one and two of the gospel of Luke.
3. Which gospel writer is traditionally thought to have also written the book of Revelation?

Answer: John

John also is the credited author of three New Testament epistles, titled First, Second and Third John.
4. The rest of the questions in this quiz are contextual questions. Which gospel traces the genealogy of Jesus back to Adam?

Answer: Luke

It can be found in Luke 3:23-38. Matthew is the only other writer to trace Jesus' genealogy (1:1-17), but he only goes back to Abraham.
5. Which gospel is the only one to mention the visit of the wise men?

Answer: Matthew

The story of their visit to the baby Jesus can be found in Matthew 2:1-12.
6. In which book can you find the story of a 12 year old Jesus visiting the temple?

Answer: Luke

This story of Jesus' childhood can be found in Luke 2:41-52.
7. In which gospel does the story of Jesus' first miracle, changing water into wine, appear?

Answer: John

It can be found in John 2:1-12.
8. Which gospel does not include Jesus' temptation for forty days in the desert?

Answer: John

Matthew 4:1-11, Mark 1:12-13, and Luke 4:1-13 contain the story, but John doesn't bring it up. Matthew and Luke have very similar versions, and Mark only mentions it in passing, but John goes straight from the baptism of Jesus to the calling of his disciples.
9. In one of Jesus' parables, a man is going down the road when he gets mugged by some bandits. They beat him, rob him, and leave him for dead. A priest and a Levite, two holy men, both pass him by without stopping to assist. But one man, a Samaritan, stops and cares for the man. This is the parable of the Good Samaritan, and can only be found in which gospel?

Answer: Luke

This parable can only be found in Luke 10:30-37.
10. In another of Jesus' parables, a servant was in debt to his master for ten thousand talents. The servant begged for mercy and received it. So, with his newfound freedom, the servant promptly went out, found a fellow servant who owed a hundred denarii, and had the man thrown in jail despite his pleas for mercy. This lack of gratitude angered the master and he threw the unforgiving servant in jail until he could pay off the whole debt. This parable, called the parable of the unforgiving servant, is exclusive to which gospel?

Answer: Matthew

It can be found in Matthew 18:23-35.
11. Jesus told a lot of parables, and here's another one. A man had two sons, the younger of which demanded his inheritance early so he could go live it up. He blew all his cash on gambling and women, and ended up living in a pig sty. When he went home to ask his father for a job as a slave, the father welcomed him home with open arms and threw a party. This parable is known as the Prodigal Son, and is only in which gospel?

Answer: Luke

The story is in Luke 15:11-24. It actually continues on to verse 32, but the part recited was only from those fourteen verses.

Answer: John

Lazarus was a friend, and Jesus raised him from the dead in John 11:1-44.
13. All the gospels cite Judas as the man who betrayed Jesus to the high priests, but which gospel tells of his suicide?

14. Peter is told that he will deny Jesus three times in all four gospels, but in which gospel is he told that it will be before the cock crows twice?

Answer: Mark

This can be found in Mark 14:30. In the other references (Matthew 26:34, Luke 22:34, and John 13:38), Peter is told he will betray Jesus before the cock crows at all.
15. All four gospels say that women were the first to discover Jesus was not in the tomb, but in which gospel was Mary Magdalene the only woman to go to the tomb that morning?

This is in John 20:1. Matthew 28:1 puts Mary Magdalene and "the other Mary" there. Mark 16:1 puts Mary Magdalene, Mary mother of James, and Salome at the tomb. Luke 23:55-24:1 just mentions the women who had come with him from Galilee.
16. "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life." From which gospel does this well-known quote come?

Answer: John

This is from John 3:16, probably the most famous verse in the Bible.

18. "Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her." This is from the trial of an adulterous woman found in which gospel?

Matthew 28:18-20 contains what is known as the Great Commission, where he gives his disciples the power to make disciples all over the world.
20. Which gospel writer is thought to have referred to himself as "the disciple Jesus loved"?

Answer: John

John constantly refers to "the disciple Jesus loved", which is thought to be a show of humility that he won't put himself into his own narrative.
