Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Every Christian is probably familiar with Jesus' parable of the Good Samaritan, but on what road did the story take place?

Answer: between Jerusalem and Jericho

This parable of Jesus is only found in the Gospel of Luke (10:30-34) where he used it to illustrate the definition of who is a neighbor. The Samaritans and Jews were cultural groups that despised each other, so if a Samaritan took the time and effort to help an Israeli in trouble, it has much more meaning, especially after high-ranking Israelites in the story did not bother to help one of their own.
2. When the Magi visited baby Jesus, what does the Bible say about their means of transportation?

Answer: it doesn't mention anything about it

The visit of the Wise Men from the East is only found in the Gospel of Matthew (2:1-12). Nothing is said of how they accomplished their journey or how many of them there actually were, despite what is presented in Christmas pageants, songs, movies and on greeting cards. One can only surmise the most likely means. Being wealthy men, they probably had camels, but also horses, oxen, donkeys and even chariots.
3. After Cain killed his brother Abel, to what land did he flee?

Answer: Nod

The first indication of homicide in the Bible, Cain was punished for his transgression by being driven out from his familiar homeland and away from God's presence. It is also related that God placed a "mark" on Cain, the meaning of which is still being debated by Biblical scholars. This dramatic story is found in Genesis 4:3-16.
4. When Joshua was in the process of conquering the land of Canaan as a homeland for the emerging nation of Israel, he was tricked by people who pretended to come from a far land. Of what nearby city were they actually citizens?

Answer: Gibeon

The crafty men of Gibeon clothed themselves in worn shoes and ragged garments and packed their sacks with dry, moldy bread to make it seem as if they had come on a long journey to bargain that the Israelites would not attack them as they had other cities in Canaan.

However, after Joshua made the promise, he discovered the deception. He did not attack Gibeon because of his bargain, but he made the people slaves as revenge for their trickery. This can be read in chapter 9 of Joshua.
5. For what reason did David send some of his men to see the wealthy Nabal?

Answer: to get supplies

When David was camped at Paran, he sent ten of his men to Carmel to ask the wealthy Nabal for supplies for his army. Nabal was quite brusque in his reply and refused. When David learned of Nabal's curt rebuff, David started to gear up to attack Nabal.

However, Nabal's wife, Abigail, was wiser than her husband. She sent a generous amount of foodstuffs to David to prevent his attacking, without telling Nabal until afterwards. When Nabal heard what Abigail had done, he fell dead and Abigail became David's wife. (1 Samuel 25: 1-42).
6. In the 14th chapter of the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus and some of his disciples sailed across the Sea of Galilee. What was the name of the place where they landed?

Answer: Gennesaret

Gennesaret was on the eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee. While there, Jesus healed many sick people that came to him when they heard he was visiting. Before this, the disciples had set sail without Jesus, but he walked over the water to get to the boat.
7. What man in the Old Testament made a long journey to Moriah to perform an act of worship to God?

Answer: Abraham

God asked Abraham to sacrifice his dearest son, Isaac, at Moriah. Of course, God stopped Abraham just in time and provided a ram for the sacrifice. Some Bible scholars believe that Moriah is the present site of the city of Jerusalem. This event is chronicled in Genesis 22:1-13.
8. The reluctant prophet Jonah tried to flee from his holy commission of prophesying to the city of Nineveh about the sins of its citizens. Where was Jonah's intended destination?

Answer: Tarsish

Jonah booked passage on a boat sailing to Tarsish. God was not pleased that Jonah was on the run and sent a storm to hinder the boat's progress. What happened to Jonah can be read in the first chapter of the book of Jonah. Bible scholars disagree exactly where Tarsish was located; some think it was just a general term to mean a place far away, others believe it may refer to refer to the Cilician city of Tarsus which was located on what is now the southern coast of Turkey.
9. Two travelers on the road to Emmaus meet the risen Jesus, but did not recognize him at first. Which is the only Gospel book that mentions this encounter?

Answer: Luke

This meeting is only chronicled in Luke's Gospel. Jesus fell in with the travelers and spoke with them about the events surrounding the recent crucifixion. When they invited him to dine with them, he blessed the food and they suddenly recognized Jesus, but he immediately vanished! (Luke 24:13-35).
10. The Apostle Paul was noted for his missionary journeys. When on his way to Rome for his last known journey, he was involved in a shipwreck on what island?

Answer: Melita

Paul was often accompanied by other evangelists of the early Christian church, but on this voyage, no traveling companions are named. The voyage may have passed the other mentioned locales, but was actually marooned on Melita (present day Malta). This exciting passage can be read in Acts, Chapters 27 & 28:1-16.
