Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's get started. Prepare to jump towards the end, to the beginning and all around the middle of the book of Matthew. Okay; fair warning given. According to the 24th chapter of Matthew, who will gather God's elect, (chosen people) together?

Answer: Angels

In the 30th and 31st verses, we are informed that Jesus will send his angels to gather them from all points of the earth.
"And then shall appear the Son of man in heaven...And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet and they shall gather together his elect..."
2. In Matthew 27:55-56, many women are watching from a distance as Jesus dies on the cross. Three of them are mentioned specifically: Mary Magdalene (Mary of Magdala); Mary, the mother of James and Joses; and the mother of Zebedee's children. Can you name the other children of Mary, the mother of James and Joses, and the names of the sons of Zebedee? (Hint: see Mark 3:17 and Mark 6:3.)

Answer: Simon, Judah, Jesus and some daughters, along with James and John

In Mark 3:17 we see that James and John were the sons of Zebedee whom Jesus gave the last name of "Boanerges", and in Mark 6:3, Jesus' half-brothers are mentioned by name with his half-sisters alluded to.
This question and answer demonstrate the correlation between the gospel accounts of Matthew and Mark. There are many other examples to be found in all four gospels: Luke, John, Mark and Matthew.
3. One of the less well-known original 12 disciples is referred to by his last name, Thaddeus. What is his first name, according to Matthew 10:3?

Answer: Lebbaeus

Many people cannot name the twelve disciples; I doubt if I can either. I'm going to list them here while looking at Matthew 10:2-4.
They were Simon Peter, Andrew (his brother), James, John, (the sons of Zebedee), Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, (also known as Levi), James, (the son of Alphaeus), Labbaeus Thaddeus, Simon, (the Canaanite) and Judas Iscariot (the betrayer).
4. According to Matthew 24:36, why should people not worry when others predict the time of the end of this earth age, since they are invariably wrong about their "predictions"?

Answer: Only God the Father knows when it will be

Matthew 24:36 states it succintly:

"But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only." Seems plain enough to me.
5. Jesus mourns over Jerusalem in the 23rd chapter of Matthew. When does He say that the city's inhabitants will see Him again?

Answer: when they say "Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord"

The answer is found in Matthew 23:39.
"For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord."
(Here Jesus is quoting Psalm 118:26.)
6. Jesus was once asked a question by the Sadducees, a particular sect that did not believe in the resurrection of the dead, unlike another sect, the Pharisees. The Sadducees here in Matthew 22:23-33 were asking about the relationships between husbands and wives after the resurrection (which they didn't even believe in). How did Jesus respond to them?

Answer: He said that no one would be married after the resurrection

The question these Sadducees were asking bordered upon the absurd. They were asking: if a woman was married to seven brothers, consecutively, with each one dying before she did, whose wife she would be in the resurrection (which they refused to accept as a doctrine).
This is a great bad example of people who do not truly desire the truth; they merely wanted to be obstructionists.
Jesus informed them that she would not "belong" to any of them, and that they were in error in their thinking.
7. In the eighth chapter of Matthew, we read of a man from Capernaum who was a soldier in authority over other soldiers. He came and asked Jesus to heal his servant, and when Jesus told him that he would come to heal the servant, this soldier requested that he not do so. Why?

Answer: he was only asking for Jesus to speak the word from a distance because he felt unworthy for Jesus to come to his house

We seldom see Jesus amazed at people's words or actions. Only a few occasions come to mind where he is recorded as being surprised by them. This is one of those times. In Matthew 8:8, we see the centurion saying "...but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed."
In the 10th verse, we see that Jesus "marvelled" and said to those around Him,
"Verily, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel."
8. Why did the angel of the Lord tell Joseph, Jesus' earthly father, to call his son's name "JESUS", according to Matthew 1:21?

Answer: because Mary's son would save his people from their sins

"And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins." The Hebrew name is derived from the same root source as Joshua, and is a composite of two Hebrew words that together mean, "Yehovah (God) Saves."
9. When Pontius Pilate was about to bring Jesus to trial, someone sent a message to him warning him not to have anything to do with "that just man". Who had a dream and sent this message to Pilate after he sat down on the judgement seat? (Matthew 27:19)

Answer: Pilate's wife

Pilate's wife, who had a history of being superstitious, and was "into" dream interpretations, sent the warning to her husband as he was sitting down to judge Jesus. While he may have desired to please his wife, the excitement and the angry mob distracted him enough that in spite of her warning, he was unable to pay heed to it. His symbolic hand-washing was just that...symbolic.
10. According to Matthew 16:23, Jesus is recorded as saying, "Get thee behind me, Satan; thou art an offence to me; for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men." Who was this person and what had they done to elicit such a response from Jesus?

Answer: Simon Peter - he had rebuked Jesus and tried to discourage him from being crucified

A mere six verses earlier, Jesus had told the Peter that he was blessed because he had recognized through the Father's revelation that Christ was the son of God. Here, however, because Simon Peter was attempting to dissuade Jesus from the task at hand, namely the crucifixion, Jesus turned to him and referred to him as Satan.
Peter was neither God nor Satan, but was prone to the influences of both, as many are today.
