Matthew 101 Trivia Quiz

The Gospel of Matthew is a wonderful place to start a Bible study. It is filled with Jesus' teaching. This should be a simple quiz; it is from The King James Version. God bless, and I wish you all 'enough'.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the genealogy of Jesus, there are 4 women named, and one woman is mentioned but not named in the genealogy itself. Who is she?

Answer: Bathsheba

These were not women we would expect to be included! Tamar was an adulteress, Ruth was not a Jew (she was a Moabitess), Rachab was a harlot, and Bathsheba was the wife of Uriah (which King David had killed to hide her pregnancy by David). The suspicions of these four fit perfectly with the circumstances that surrounded Mary, mother of Jesus.
2. In the King James translation of the Bible, when the wise men visited Jesus, they went to the barn where Jesus lay in a manger.

Answer: False

Matthew 2:11 "And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down and worshiped Him...." Note that the Bible refers to a house, not to a barn. That is why King Herod ordered the killing of boys age two and under. Jesus was no longer a newborn, he was a young child.
3. Who said that on judgement day, man shall give account of every idle word he has spoken?

Answer: Jesus

Matthew 12:36 - "But, I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgement." We need to think before speaking.
4. Jesus said, "I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but _________ ."

Answer: Sinners to repentance

This is from Matthew 9:13. Jesus wanted everyone to be saved (he still does), yet some of the righteous thought bad of Jesus for having anything to do with the sinners. Sadly the world still thinks that way today, so that a Christian being seen with a sinner sometimes is the talk of the town. But how can a sinner come to know Jesus if the Christian doesn't tell them? Think about it!
5. Jesus told the devil not to tempt God.

Answer: true

After Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, the devil tempted Him. In Matthew 4:7 Jesus told Satan, 'It is written again, thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.' (KJV)
6. Who did Jesus tell to 'Follow me and I will make you fishers of men'?

Answer: Peter and Andrew

Jesus was walking past the sea of Galilee, when he saw the two brothers casting their fishing nets into the sea. Matthew 4:18-19
7. What kind of fruit does a corrupt tree produce?

Answer: evil fruit

Matthew 7:17 "Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit."
8. Jesus said we cannot serve two masters. What are they?

Answer: God and mammon

Mammon is money, and riches. Matthew 6:24
9. What are the Poor in Spirit promised?

Answer: the Kingdom of Heaven

This is the first of Jesus' teachings in what is referred to as the Sermon on the Mount. Matthew 5:3
10. What was Jesus' last commandment?

Answer: Baptizing in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost

This is also called the Great Commission. Matthew 28:19
