Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What's the hundredth verse in the Old Testament?

Answer: Genesis 4:20

Yes, Genesis 4:20 is the hundredth verse in the Old Testament. The first chapter of Genesis has 31 verses while the second chapter has 25 verses and the third chapter has 24, giving a total of 80 verses. Twenty verses into the fourth chapter, you find the 100th verse.

It's a rather innocuous verse. In the NIV Bible, it simply states: "Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock." Incidentally, apart from Eve, Adah is the first woman to be mentioned by name in the Bible.
2. What's the hundredth chapter in the Old Testament?

Answer: Leviticus 10

The correct answer is Leviticus 10. Genesis has 50 chapters and Exodus has 40. Ten chapters later in Leviticus, you come across the hundredth chapter in the Old Testament. The chapter tells about Nadab and Abihu, sons of Aaron, being devoured by fire from the LORD because of their violation of God's holiness.
3. According to Genesis 21:5, who became a father at the age of 100 when his wife Sarah gave birth to a son?

Answer: Abraham

The correct answer is Abraham. According to Genesis 17:17, Abraham's wife Sarah was 90 at the time. It was the first child of the couple and they named him Isaac, as commanded by the God. Genesis 16:16, however, reports Abraham had previously become a father at age 86 when Ishmael was born. Ishmael's mother was Hagar, an Egyptian slave of Sarah.
4. Joshua 24:32 tells of Joseph's bones, which the Israelites had brought up from Egypt, being buried in a tract of land Jacob bought for 100 pieces of silver. Where was the tract of land? (Hint: It's the same name as the man who defiled Dinah.)

Answer: Shechem

Shechem is the correct answer. The burial of Joseph's bones is the fulfillment of both his wish and his prophecy that are found in Genesis 50:24-25. The verses in the NIV Bible state: "Then Joseph said to his brothers, 'I am about to die. But God will surely come to your aid and take you up out of this land to the land he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.' And Joseph made the Israelites swear an oath and said, 'God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up from this place'." According to Genesis 50:26, Joseph was 110 years old when he died. And his body was embalmed and he was placed in a coffin in Egypt, Scripture states.
5. 1 Kings 7:2 tells of an Israelite king building the Palace of the Forest of Lebanon which was 100 cubits long, 50 cubits wide and 30 cubits high, with four rows of cedar columns supporting trimmed cedar beams. What's the name of the king who built the palace?

Answer: Solomon

Solomon is the correct answer. According to Scripture, it took 13 years to build the palace. The seventh chapter of 1 Kings is devoted to a long list of details about the construction of the palace. Time and again, Scripture states only top-rate building materials were used. To put things in perspective, the measurements of the palace would be about 150 feet long, 75 feet wide and 45 feet high or about 45 meters long, 23 meters wide and 14 meters high.

It would have been an awe-inspiring building in its time.

A number of other structures were built which were part of the palace complex.
6. 1 Kings 18:4 tells of a man taking 100 of the LORD'S prophets and hiding them in two caves as Jezebel, wife of King Ahab, was attempting to kill them. What's the name of the man who hid the prophets?

Answer: Obadiah

Obadiah hid the prophets in two different caves with some theologians believing he did this because if one group was discovered, the other group would be safe. According to 1 Kings 18:4, Obadiah not only hid the prophets, but he also provided them with food and water. Ironically, Obadiah was the palace administrator for King Ahab, as per 1 Kings 18:3.
7. According to 1 Samuel 18:25, King Saul offered David his daughter's hand in marriage if he could kill 100 Philistines and provide their foreskins as proof of his accomplishment. What was the name of the Saul's daughter?

Answer: Michal

The name of Saul's daughter was Michal. David not only delivered on the challenge, but he also provided Saul with the foreskins of 100 additional Philistines. Saul's offer, however, had nothing to do with romance between Michal and David. 1 Samuel 18:25 states Saul's plan was to have David fall by the hands of the Philistines.

In other words, Saul didn't want him as a son-in-law. He wanted him dead.
8. 1 Samuel 25:18 tells of a future wife of David offering him 100 cakes of raisins as well as a large quantity of other foodstuffs as his band of warriors was approaching. What was the woman's name? (Hint: She was married at the time to Nabal, a man described as surly and mean in Scripture.)

Answer: Abigail

Abigail was intelligent and beautiful, as per 1 Samuel 25:3. According to Scripture, David sent men to extend greetings to Nabal but they were greeted with insults. So David opted to attack Nabal and his men with the goal of leaving not one of them alive, according to 1 Samuel 25:22. With David's warriors approaching, Abigail acted quickly and greeted them with a large quantity of food as a gesture of peace. David accepted the offer and abandoned his plans for attack. 1 Samuel 25:38 states about ten days later the LORD struck Nabal and he died.

The chapter ends with Abigail becoming David's wife.
9. Psalm 119 is the only chapter in the Old Testament and the New Testament with more than 100 verses.

Answer: True

True. Psalm 119 is the only chapter in the Bible with more than 100 verses. In fact, it has 176 verses. No other chapter comes close to having so many verses. The next chapter with the most verses is Numbers 7 with 89. Luke 1 has 80 verses and Matthew 26 has 75 while Nehemiah has 73. Four other chapters have more than 70 verses.

They are Psalm 78:72, Mark 14:72, Luke 22:71 and John 6:71. (A tip of the hat to teammate Rimrunner for providing this information.)
10. Psalm 100 is one of the more popular of the Psalms with its words performed to modern music in various churches. Complete the missing words from verses 4 and 5 from Psalm 100, as per the NIV Bible: "Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through ___ __________."

Answer: all generations

The correct answer is 'all generations.' Psalm 100 is literally a song of praise for the LORD'S faithfulness to His people. The psalm follows Psalm 93-99 which are known as royal psalms.

Here is Psalm 100 in its entirety, as per the NKJV Bible:
"Make a joyful shout to the LORD, all you lands!
Serve the LORD with gladness;
Come before His presence with singing.
Know that the LORD, He is God;
It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves;
We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.
Enter into His gates with thanksgiving,
And into His courts with praise.
Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.
For the LORD is good;
His mercy is everlasting,
And His truth endures to all generations."
11. In which book in the Old Testament would you find this verse that contains the number 100 and offers some sage advice? "A man may have a hundred children and live many years; yet no matter how long he lives, if he cannot enjoy his prosperity and does not receive proper burial, I say that a stillborn child is better off than he."

Answer: Ecclesiastes

The answer is Ecclesiastes, which might come as a surprise to some. This gem is from the third verse of the sixth chapter. The writer of Ecclesiastes is unknown, but many theologians suspect the writer is Solomon, who also wrote Proverbs and Song of Songs.

In a nutshell, the main message in Ecclesiastes is the pursuit of wealth, power and fame is worthless and the only thing that matters is to be obedient to God.
12. Complete the missing word from Ecclesiastes 8:12, as per the NIV Bible: "Although a wicked person who commits a hundred crimes may live a long time, I know that it will go better with those who _______ God, who are reverent before him."

Answer: fear

The correct word is 'fear'. In a nutshell, Ecclesiastes 8:10-17 is about death coming to all. In the end, the writer is saying those who live in fear of God will succeed, although sometimes it might appear the wicked are the successful ones. The first mention of the fear of God in the NIV Bible is Genesis 20:11.

It is a term that appears time and again in the Old Testament and the New Testament. Even the dying thief on the cross uses the term 'fear God' in Luke 23:40 while admonishing the other thief for not believing in Jesus.
13. What's the hundredth verse in the New Testament?

Answer: Matthew 5:10

The correct answer is Matthew 5:10. The first chapter of Matthew has 25 verses while the second chapter has 23 verses, the third chapter has 17 and the fourth chapter 25, giving a total of 90 verses. Ten verses into the fifth chapter, you find the hundredth verse. And it's a classic line from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount.

The passage in the NIV Bible states: "Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 5:9, the verse immediately before the 100th verse in the New Testament, is another classic.

It states: "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God."
14. What's the hundredth chapter in the New Testament?

Answer: Acts 11

The correct answer is Acts 11. In other words, you don't come across the hundredth chapter in the New Testament until you're well into the fifth book. Matthew has 28 chapters while Mark has 16, Luke 24 and John 21 for a total of 89 chapters. Eleven chapters later, you hit the 100th chapter at Acts 11.

The chapter tells of Peter defending God's grace for the Gentiles and of Barnabas and Saul at Antioch. Saul, of course, would later become known as Paul and serve as the main apostle to the Gentiles.
15. The following passage contains the number 100 and is from Luke 15:4 in the NIV Bible: "Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn't he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?" Who made the statement?

Answer: Jesus

Jesus made the statement in the parable that has become known as the Parable of the Lost Sheep. The parable is followed by the Parable of the Lost Coin and the Parable of the Lost Son, or the Prodigal Son. My favorite Scripture verse is contained in the Parable of the Lost Sheep. Luke 15:7, in the NIV Bible, quotes Jesus as saying: "I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent."
16. According to the sixth chapter of Mark, when Jesus performed a particular miracle, the people were seated on the grass in groups of a hundred and fifties. What was the miracle he performed?

Answer: The feeding of 5,000

Scripture states the people were seated in groups of a hundred and fifties when Jesus fed the 5,000 with five loaves of bread and two fish. Actually, the miracle should be called the feeding of the 15,000 rather than 5,000. As was the custom of the day, women and children were not included in the 5,000 figure and many theologians suspect as many as 15,000 people were actually fed by Jesus with the pittance of food.
17. The following quote by Jesus contains the number 100 and is from Matthew 19:29 in the NIV Bible: "And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life." Who was Christ speaking to at the time?

Answer: The original 12 Disciples

Yes, Jesus was speaking to the 12 Disciples when the statement was made. In other words, Christ was telling them that great would be their reward in heaven for following him. Similar Scripture appears in Mark 10:28-30 and Luke 18:28-30. According to Matthew 19:28, the 12 Disciples will sit on 12 thrones judging the 12 tribes of Israel.
18. The following quote by Jesus contains the number 100 and is from Mark 4:8 in the NIV Bible: "Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times." What parable was Christ telling when the statement was made?

Answer: Parable of the Sower

The statement comes from the Parable of the Sower. The parable also appears in Matthew 13:1-23 and in Luke 8: 4-15. The Parable of the Sower is about how people react to God's Word. Mark 4:14-20, quoting Jesus, offers this definition of the parable: "The farmer sows the word.

Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy.

But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful.

Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop-some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown."
19. The following passage contains the number 100 and quotes Jesus, as per Matthew 18:28 in the NIV Bible: "But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins. He grabbed him and began to choke him. 'Pay back what you owe me!' he demanded." What was the topic Jesus was speaking about when these words were used?

Answer: Forgiveness

The topic Jesus was speaking about in the parable is forgiveness. Scripture states he used the parable while answering a question from Peter. Matthew 18:21-22, in the NIV Bible, states: "Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, 'Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?' Jesus answered, 'I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.'" The parable follows in verses 23 to 35.
20. What book in the New Testament tells of a plague of hail in which the world is lashed by hailstones weighing about 100 pounds, according to the NIV?

Answer: Revelation

Yes, Revelation is the correct answer. Revelation 16:21, in the NIV Bible states: "From the sky huge hailstones, each weighing about a hundred pounds, fell on people. And they cursed God on account of the plague of hail, because the plague was so terrible." The sixteenth chapter is devoted to seven plagues striking the earth.

The plague of the hailstones is the final one stated in the chapter.
