Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Genesis 5:32, what man was five hundred years old and begot Shem, Ham, and Japheth?

Answer: Noah

Noah is the correct answer. He and his unnamed wife and their three sons -- Shem, Ham, and Japheth as well as their three wives -- survived a massive flood that engulfed the world by taking refuge in a specially built ark. In addition to providing safe accommodation for Noah and his family, the ark also housed two of every kind of animal and bird, according to Scripture.

Details about the flood appear in Genesis 6 and 7.
2. Who rushed to meet David with five hundred plus food items consisting of, among other things, two hundred loaves of bread, two hundred cakes of figs and one hundred clusters of raisins? (1 Samuel 25:18)

Answer: Abigail

Abigail assembled a massive package of food and presented it to David to prvent him from attacking her husband Nabal. 1 Samuel 25 states Nabal was extremely rude to ten of David's men with the end result being David was planning to attack Nabal.

Scripture states Abigail caught wind of David's plans and assembled a massive array of food to present to him as a peace offering.

1 Samuel 25:18, in the NKJV, states: "Then Abigail made haste and took two hundred loaves of bread, two skins of wine, five sheep already dressed, five seahs of roasted grain, one hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs, and loaded them on donkeys."

Scripture states that after Abigail presented her gifts to David, he had a change of heart and decided not to attack Nabal.

Later, Abigail would become David's wife when Nabal died. Scripture has nothing but nice things to say about Abigail, portraying her as beautiful, wise and gracious. It's a different matter for her first husband, however. Nabal is portrayed as being foolhardy and an obstinate man. In fact, his name means 'fool,' according to 1 Samuel 25:25.
3. A verse in the Old Testament tells of "five hundred men of the sons of Simeon" going to Mount Seir, having as their captains Pelatiah, Neariah, Rephaiah, and Uzziel, the sons of Ishi, and defeating the Amelekites in battle. In what book do you find the verse?

Answer: 1 Chronicles

The passage is found in 1 Chronicles 4:42. To put the verse in context, here's how 1 Chronicles 4:41-43 reads in the NKJV: "These recorded by name came in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah; and they attacked their tents and the Meunites who were found there, and utterly destroyed them, as it is to this day. So they dwelt in their place, because there was pasture for their flocks there. Now some of them, five hundred men of the sons of Simeon, went to Mount Seir, having as their captains Pelatiah, Neariah, Rephaiah, and Uzziel, the sons of Ishi. And they defeated the rest of the Amalekites who had escaped. They have dwelt there to this day."

Jewish traditional belief is Ezra wrote Chronicles. In the Hebrew Bible, 1 and 2 Chronicles are one book.
4. Old Testament Scripture tells of a man who was "greatest of all the people of the East" with his immense wealth including five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred female donkeys as well as "a very large household". Who was the man?

Answer: Job

Job, according to Scripture was incredibly wealthy. Job 1:1-3, in the NKJV, states: "There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God and shunned evil. And seven sons and three daughters were born to him. Also, his possessions were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and a very large household, so that this man was the greatest of all the people of the East."

The book of Job tells of a series of calamities happening to Job in which he loses his sons and daughters as well as all his wealth. On top of this, Job becomes severely ill, but he remains faithful to God.

There's a happy ending to the book as it tells of Job being extremely blessed by God in his latter years.

Job 42:12-16 states: "Now the LORD blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning; for he had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, one thousand yoke of oxen, and one thousand female donkeys. He also had seven sons and three daughters. And he called the name of the first Jemimah, the name of the second Keziah, and the name of the third Keren-Happuch. In all the land were found no women so beautiful as the daughters of Job; and their father gave them an inheritance among their brothers. After this Job lived one hundred and forty years, and saw his children and grandchildren for four generations. So Job died, old and full of days."
5. Esther 9:12 quotes a king making the following statement containing the number five hundred to Queen Esther: "The Jews have killed and destroyed five hundred men in Shushan the citadel, and the ten sons of Haman. Now what is your petition? It shall be granted to you. Or what is your further request? It shall be done." What was the name of the king who made the statement, as per the NKJV? (The NIV uses a different name.)

Answer: Ahasuerus

King Ahasuerus made the statement to Queen Esther after a diabolical plot was uncovered in which all the Jews in the vast domain he ruled were to be exterminated. (In the NIV, Ahasuerus is known as Xerxes.) The man behind the evil plot to kill the Jews was Haman who was thwarted by Esther and her cousin Mordecai.

In response to Ahasuerus' statement, Scripture tells of Esther requesting the right for the Jews to protect themselves and for the bodies of Haman's ten sons to be hanged from gallows.

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible have this to say about Esther's response: "The patterns of reprisal and revenge were so deeply ingrained in ancient Middle East culture that the survival of even one of these sons might mean trouble for the next generation of Jewish people. Esther renewed her initial request (Esther 8:11) for the Jews to have authority to protect themselves against attack. The king assented. He also ordered Haman's ten sons to be exposed on the gallows. The men were already dead. (Esther 9:10). Their bodies were displayed as a warning to anyone who planned evil toward the Jews."
6. The apostle Paul, in one of the thirteen books he is credited with writing, states Jesus, after His resurrection, was seen by more than "five hundred brethren at once." In what New Testament book does Paul make the statement?

Answer: 1 Corinthians

Paul's statement is found in 1 Corinthians 15:6. To put the verse in context, here's how 1 Corinthians 15:3-8 reads in the NKJV: "For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve. After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain to the present, but some have fallen asleep. After that He was seen by James, then by all the apostles. Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one born out of due time."

The fact the disciples and Paul, as well as a large number of others, saw Jesus after His resurrection convinced them the Gospel message, beyond any shadow of a doubt, was true. As a result, they risked their lives and endured tremendous hardship to convince others to believe in a resurrected Jesus Christ.
7. The following quote, containing the number five hundred, is from Luke 7:41 (NKJV): "There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty." Who made the statement?

Answer: Jesus

The quote contained in Luke 7:41 is by Jesus. The verse is from a passage in which Jesus declares forgiveness for a sinful woman. The woman had showed her profound love for Christ by washing His feet with her tears and then drying them with her hair. Some of the people looking on were aghast Jesus would even associate with the woman.

Here's how Luke 7:36-50 reads in the NKJV states:

"Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee's house, and sat down to eat. And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil. Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself, saying, 'This Man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner.'

"And Jesus answered and said to him, 'Simon, I have something to say to you.' So he said, 'Teacher, say it.'

"'There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more?'

"Simon answered and said, 'I suppose the one whom he forgave more.'

"And He said to him, 'You have rightly judged.' Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, 'Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in. You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil. Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.'

"Then He said to her, 'Your sins are forgiven.'

"And those who sat at the table with Him began to say to themselves, 'Who is this who even forgives sins?'

"Then He said to the woman, 'Your faith has saved you. Go in peace'."
8. Count the chapters and the five hundredth chapter in the Old Testament of the Protestant Bible is Psalm 14. The Psalms, of course, contains one hundred and fifty chapters. Out of the four names below, which one, going strictly by Scripture, DID NOT write any of the Psalms?

Answer: Ezekiel

Ezekiel is not credited with writing any of the Psalms. It's possible he did, as a number of the Psalms appear without the name of the author. However, going strictly by Scripture, Ezekiel is the only correct answer to the question.

David wrote the largest number of Psalms, including Psalm 14. The numbers vary, with different Websites giving a different total for David's contributions. However, the consensus appears to be that David wrote more than 70 Psalms at the very least. According to notes in the NKJV Study Bible, some of the other Palmists include Ethan, Heman and Asaph. Solomon is credited with writing two of the Psalms -- Numbers 72 and 127 -- and Moses with writing Number 90.

If anyone is interested, here are the number of chapters in the Old Testament of the Protestant Bible one goes through before one arrives at the 500th chapter:
Genesis -- 50
Exodus -- 40
Leviticus -- 27
Numbers -- 36
Deuteronomy -- 34
Joshua -- 24
Judges 21
Ruth -- 4
1 Samuel -- 30
2 Samuel -- 24
1 Kings -- 22
2 Kings -- 25
1 Chronicles -- 29
2 Chronicles -- 45
Ezra -- 10
Nehemiah -- 13
Esther -- 10
Job -- 42

The total above, comes to four hundred and eighty-six chapters. As a result, Psalm 14 is the five hundredth chapter in the Old Testament of the Protestant Bible.
9. Count the verses and the 500th one in the Old Testament of the Protestant Bible, is Genesis 20:2, which tells of a married man and his wife pretending to be brothers and sisters while they were living in Gerar. What is the name of the husband-wife team who pretended to be brother and sister?

Answer: Abraham and Sarah

The correct answer is Abraham and Sarah. It would be the second time they pulled off such a ruse.

Sarah, who was known as Sarai at the time, told people in Egypt, Abraham, who was known as Abram at the time, was her brother and not her husband. (See Genesis 12:11-20). The ruse took place while they were forced to move to Egypt due to a famine and she took such action to prevent Abraham from being killed.

According to Genesis 12:11, Sarah was extremely beautiful and as per the custom of the day, the Pharaoh would want to add her to his harem. Notes in the NIV Study Bible state "if Pharaoh were to add Sarai to his harem while knowing she was Abram's wife, he would have to kill Abram first."

Abraham and Sarah would pull off the same ruse in Genesis 20 to deceive Abimelech, king of Gerar, into thinking they were brother and sister. And once again, the deception was designed to save Abraham's life.

It's interesting to note Isaac and Rebekkah pulled off the same deception, pretending to be brother and sister, in Genesis 26:7. Again, such action was taken to prevent Isaac from being killed.

If anyone is interested, the first 19 chapters of Genesis contain 498 verses, as per the information below:
Genesis 1 -- 31 verses
Genesis 2 -- 25 verses
Genesis 3 -- 24 verses
Genesis 4 -- 26 verses
Genesis 5 -- 32 verses
Genesis 6 -- 22 verses
Genesis 7 -- 24 verses
Genesis 8 -- 22 verses
Genesis 9 -- 29 verses
Genesis 10 -- 32 verses
Genesis 11 -- 32 verses
Genesis 12 -- 20 verses
Genesis 13 -- 18 verses
Genesis 14 -- 24 verses
Genesis 15 -- 21 verses
Genesis 16 -- 16 verses
Genesis 17 -- 27 verses
Genesis 18 -- 33 verses
Genesis 19 -- 38 verses

Add on two more verses (Genesis 20:1 and 20:2) and you get the total of five hundred verses.
10. Count the verses and the 500th one in the New Testament is Matthew 15:11. The verse provides this quote from Jesus about defilement: "Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man." Who, according to Scripture, was offended by the statement?

Answer: The Pharisees

The Pharisees were offended by Jesus' comment. The quote by Jesus is contained in Matthew 15:1-20, a passage known as 'Defilement Coming from Within'. In other words, Jesus was saying the outward appearance of a man or woman is not a true measuring stick when it comes to determining if someone is living for God.

Here's how Matthew 15:10-20 explains things in the NKJV:

"When He had called the multitude to Himself, He said to them, 'Hear and understand: Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.'

"Then His disciples came and said to Him, 'Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?'

"But He answered and said, 'Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch.'

"Then Peter answered and said to Him, 'Explain this parable to us.'

"So Jesus said, 'Are you also still without understanding? Do you not yet understand that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and is eliminated? But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man'."

If anyone is interested, here are the number of verses in the first 15 chapters of Matthew to determine which verse is Number 500:
Matthew 1 -- 25
Matthew 2 -- 23
Matthew 3 -- 17
Matthew 4 -- 25
Matthew 5 -- 48
Matthew 6 -- 34
Matthew 7 -- 29
Matthew 8 -- 34
Matthew 9 -- 38
Matthew 10 -- 42
Matthew 11 -- 58
Matthew 12 -- 30
Matthew 13 -- 58
Matthew 14 -- 36

The total comes to 489 verses. Add on Matthew 15:1-11, and you end up at the 500th verse.
