Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the father of Laban and Rebecca as well as the nephew of Abraham? (Genesis 25:20)

Answer: Bethuel

According to Scripture, Bethuel was the nephew of Abraham and the father of Laban and Rebecca. He was the son of Nahor and Milcah, as per Genesis 24:24. Not much is known about Bethuel as he is largely mentioned in passing reference, although using the NKJV, his name appears nine times in the book of Genesis.

Rebecca would become the wife of Isaac while Laban's two daughters, Leah and Rachel, would become wives of Jacob.
2. Who was the third son of Jacob and the founder of one of the twelve tribes of Israel? (Genesis 35:23)

Answer: Levi

Levi was the third son of Jacob and Leah, as per Genesis 35:23, and was the founder of one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Leah was also the mother of five other boys -- Reuben, Simeon, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun. Levi is perhaps best known for going on a killing spree with his brother Simeon after Shechem defiled their sister Dinah, as per the 34th chapter of Genesis.
3. What Bible character has a name that translates as 'He is Laughing Now'? (Genesis 21:6)

Answer: Isaac

According to notes in the NKJV Study Bible, Isaac means 'He (God) is Laughing Now'. In Genesis 21:6, Sarah talks about the joy, and the laughter, of conceiving a child in her old age. (In the verse, she states, "God has made me laugh, and all who hear will laugh with me." (According to Genesis 17:17 she was ninety years old.)

"At one time Abraham had laughed at the improbability of having a son in his old age (Genesis 17:17)," study notes state. "Sarah had laughed too (see Genesis 18:12). But now with the birth of a child, laughter took on its happier meaning."

The study notes also make this observation about Genesis 21:6: "Among the many name jokes in the Bible, few are as wonderful as this one; the words for laugh in this verse are related to the name Isaac."
4. Bartholomew is one of the Twelve Disciples mentioned in Matthew, Mark and Luke. However, in John, he apparently has a different name. What is it?

Answer: Nathanael

Many theologians believe Bartholomew and Nathanael are the same person. When a list of the names of the disciples is given in Matthew, Mark and Luke, it contains the name Bartholomew, but not Nathanael (the name Bartholomew is also mentioned in Acts). However, in John there is mention of Nathanael, but no mention of Bartholomew.

The fact Bartholomew had a second name is not unusual as a number of New Testament characters are known by a second name. Some examples are Peter who was also known as Simon, Matthew also known as Levi and Paul also known as Saul.
5. What was the name of the Jewish woman who was married to Felix, as per Acts 24:24?

Answer: Drusilla

Drusilla was a Jewish woman who was married to Felix, the governor of Judea when the apostle Paul appeared before him.

Drusilla is mentioned only once in the Bible -- Acts 24:24 However, there is considerable information about her at various websites, including Wikipedia.

The website Christiananswers.net, for example, reports she was the third and youngest daughter of Herod Agrippa I. The website goes on to report Felix, the Roman procurator of Judea, induced her to leave her husband, Azizus, the king of Emesa, and become his wife. She and her son perished in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, A.D. 79."

According to the website Biblical-Baby-Names.com, Drusilla means 'watered by the dew.'
6. In Romans 16:15, Paul extends greetings to Philologus and Julia and another man. What's the man's name?

Answer: Nereus

Nereus is the correct answer. But as is the case with many of the people mentioned by Paul in Romans 16, little is known about Nereus as he is mentioned in passing reference. However, he did have a sister who was a believer in a resurrected Jesus Christ.

Romans 16:15, in the NKJV, states: "Greet Philologus and Julia, Nereus and his sister, and Olympas, and all the saints who are with them."
7. According to Genesis 25:24-25, who looked red and like a hairy garment when he was born?

Answer: Esau

According to Scripture, Esau looked red and like a hairy garment after his birth. Here's how Genesis 25:24-25 describes Esau's appearance: "So when her [Rebekah] days were fulfilled for her to give birth, indeed there were twins in her womb. And the first came out red. He was like a hairy garment all over; so they called his name Esau."

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state the name Esau sounds like the Hebrew word that means 'hairy'.
8. Who was the elderly man who, upon seeing the Baby Jesus, proclaimed his eyes had seen God's salvation? (Luke 3:25-35)

Answer: Simeon

Simeon is the correct answer. According to Luke 3:25-35, Simeon was just and devout and the Holy Spirit had revealed to him he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. When Simeon saw the Baby Jesus, he was convinced he had seen God's salvation. Scripture tells of Simeon taking Jesus into his arms and proclaiming the baby would "bring revelation to the Gentiles" and be the "glory" of God's people, Israel.
9. In Romans 16:21, Paul extends greetings on behalf of Timothy, Lucius and Jason as well as another worker in the early church. What was the man's name?

Answer: Sosipater

Sosipater, described by Paul as his "countryman", is the correct answer. In other words, Sosipater, like Paul, was a Jew. However, not much is known about Sosipater as he is mentioned in passing reference.

Some people believe he is the same man mentioned in Acts 20:4. In that verse, Luke, the writer of Acts, makes mention of a man called "Sopater of Berea".
10. Now take the first letter from each answer to come up with a nine-letter word for an infirmity ended on a number of occasions by Jesus?

Answer: blindness

According to Scripture, Jesus endless blindness for people on different occasions. Two prominent examples of blind people being able to see are Bartimaeus in Mark 10:46-52 and an unnamed man who was told to wash in the Pool of Siloam, as per John 9.

Scripture tells of Jesus healing people suffering from a number of conditions, everything from paralytics being made able to walk to the demonic possessed people being set free of their affliction. And there are also three different accounts of Jesus raising people from the dead. However, some of my favorite accounts involve those in which Jesus restored sight to the blind. It's incredible to think that for someone like Bartimaeus, the first sight he would see after his miraculous healing would be the face of Christ.
