Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the man who converted the Ethiopian eunuch to Christianity?

Answer: Philip

Philip was responsible for converting the Ethiopian eunuch, the first believer in Africa in a resurrected Jesus Christ. The conversion of the eunuch is found in Acts 8:26-40. Some trivia about the eunuch: Acts 8:27 in the NKJV describes him as an "important official" as he was in charge of the treasury for Candace, queen of the Ethiopians. Philip is referred to as Philip the evangelist in Acts 21:8.

When making reference to him, many people today call him Philip the evangelist to avoid any confusion with Philip, one of the original twelve disciples.
2. Who was the servant girl who went to answer the door after Peter's miraculous escape from prison and got so excited when she heard Peter's voice she ran to tell the other occupants he was at the door and left him knocking?

Answer: Rhoda

Rhoda is the correct answer. She will be always remembered as the highly excitable girl who let her mind wander from the task at hand. It's a good thing Peter was not being chased by would-be captors, as he would have been chopped liver having to stand at the door of the house trying to get in while Rhoda was busy telling everyone else the latest news.

The story in Acts 12:12-16 almost smacks of a scene from a Hollywood sitcom.
3. Matthew 1:23 (NKJV) quotes Old Testament Scripture (Isaiah 7:14) and states in part "the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son." The passage in Matthew goes on to state the child's name means "God with us." What's the child's name?

Answer: Immanuel

Immanuel is the correct answer. The passage in Matthew of course, refers to the birth of Jesus Christ.

Immanuel means 'God with us'. According to Isaiah 7:14, Immanuel would be born of a virgin, with many Christians believing this is direct reference to the Virgin Mary giving birth to Jesus. Immanuel is also spelled as Emmanuel in some versions of the Bible. The name Immanuel can be found only in Isaiah in the Old Testament and Matthew in the New Testament.
4. Who was the early church worker who was imprisoned with Paul at Philippi?

Answer: Silas

Silas served with Paul on missionary journeys. He is perhaps best known for being imprisoned in Philippi with Paul for preaching the Gospel. Their imprisonment is recorded in Acts 16:16-40. Scripture states after being stripped, beaten and severely flogged, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God shortly after midnight while being in jail with their feet in stocks!
5. According to Mark 15:21, from what community in northern Africa did the man come who was forced to carry the cross for Jesus to the crucifixion site?

Answer: Cyrene

Cyrene is the correct answer. According to Wikipedia, Cyrene was a community in northern Africa, near the present day village of Shahhat in Libya. According to Mark 15:21, Simon was the the father of Alexander and Rufus. Cyrene is also mentioned in Acts 2:10 with the second chapter telling of the arrival of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
6. When it comes to the disciple who betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver, what name belongs in the empty blank? Judas __________.

Answer: Iscariot

Judas Iscariot was the son of Simon Iscariot. John 13 tells of Jesus sharing the Last Supper with His disciples before the crucifixion and predicting one of the twelve would betray Him. The disciples all wondered who it would be. The question is answered in John 13:26: "Jesus answered, 'It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it.' And having dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon."
7. Acts 16:11-15 tells of a woman, whom many theologians believe to have been wealthy, becoming a follower of Jesus Christ. What was her name?

Answer: Lydia

Lydia was a dealer in purple cloth and she was converted to Christianity in Philippi, making her the first believer in Europe in a resurrected Jesus Christ. Many theologians believe Lydia was wealthy because Scripture states she was a seller of purple cloth. Purple was a coveted color in Biblical times and was extremely expensive, worn by royalty and the elite.
8. According to Scripture, Timothy, a young worker in the early church, had a mother and a grandmother who both had a "genuine faith". The mother's name was Eunice, as per 2 Timothy 1:5. What was the grandmother's name?

Answer: Lois

The grandmother's name was Lois, but little is known about her as she is mentioned in passing reference. 2 Timothy 1:5, in the NKJV Bible, tells Timothy: "when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also." Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, is credited with writing 1 and 2 Timothy and the recipient of both books was a young worker in the early church.
9. What is the last word in both the King James Version and the New International Version in the New Testament?

Answer: Amen

The final verse appears in Revelation 22:21, a book John wrote while in exile on the island of Patmos. The verse in the NKJV states: "The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen."
10. Now take the first letter of the nine answers to come up with the name of a woman who was a moving force in the early church.

Answer: Priscilla

Priscilla, along with her husband Aquila, played a key role in helping spread the Gospel in the early days of the church. In Romans 16:4, Paul states Priscilla and Aquila "risked their own necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles." However, no details are given as to what exactly Priscilla and Aquila did to risk their lives for Paul.

It's also interesting to note Paul places Priscilla's name before Aquila's in most of his letters, and this at a time when women were seen as grossly inferior and not even included in census figures of the day. As a result, many theologians believe Priscilla was extremely dynamic and a moving force in the early church.
