Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What son of David attempted to peacefully replace him as king, but was thwarted by Bathsheba who intervened to make sure Solomon would become king? (1 Kings 1:5)

Answer: Adonijah

Adonijah is the correct answer. While David was advanced in years, Adonijah set himself up as king. Bathsheba, David's most famous wife and mother of Solomon, however, thwarted Adonijah's plans and Solomon became king, as per David's wishes all along. According to Scripture, Bathsheba was assisted by Nathan, a prophet of God, in her bid to make Solomon, her oldest son, king.

In 1 Kings 2:25, King Solomon instructs Benaiah to kill Adonijah, and so ends the story of a would-be king.
2. Who was a concubine of King Saul and later romantically linked to Abner by Ishbosheth? (2 Samuel 3:7)

Answer: Rizpah

Rizpah is the correct answer. After the death of Saul, Israel was engaged in a civil war with one group supporting Saul's son Ishbosheth as king and the other group supporting David. (In the NIV. Ishbosheth's name appears as Ish-Bosheth.) During the upheaval, Ishbosheth accused Abner of having sexual relations with Rizpah, a concubine of Saul. Abner, a commander of Saul's army, was incensed by the charge and joined forces with David.

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state the charge of sleeping with Rizpah was seen as extremely serious because having sex with a concubine of the king was tantamount to claiming the throne.
3. According to Genesis 14:1, the king of Elam was involved in capturing Lot and his family, What was the king's name? (Spelling is per the KJV and NKJV as the NIV has a slightly different spelling.)

Answer: Chedorlaomer

Chedorlaomer was king of Elam, as per Genesis 14:1. (In the NIV, his name appears as Kedorlaomer.) Chedorlaomer reigned in the days of Abraham and was allied with three other kings who were involved in hostilities with five other city kingdoms, according to Scripture.

Genesis 14:11-17 tells of Abraham, who was known as Abram at the time, assembling three hundred and eighteen servants and defeating Chedorlaomer, freeing Lot and his family. While the NKJV and the NIV states Abram defeated Chedorlaomer, the KJV states he was "slaughtered".
4. What was the name of the conniving woman who was responsible for having John the Baptist beheaded? (Matthew 14:6-12)

Answer: Herodias

Herodias was not only conniving, but extremely vindictive. When she left her first husband (Herod Phillip I) and married his half brother Herod Antipas, John the Baptist was disgusted and denounced the union, according to the 14th chapter of Matthew. As a result, Herod ordered the arrest of John the Baptist and from this point on, his fate was sealed as Herodias had him in her clutches.

Matthew 14:6-12 reports Herod hosted a lavish birthday party for himself and when Herodias' daughter danced at the reception, Herod was so pleased he told the girl he would give her whatever she asked for. Verse 9, in the NIV Bible, states: "Prompted by her mother, she said, 'Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist'."

Verse 11 goes on to tell of this macabre scene: "His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother."
5. Out of the four names below, which one means 'God With Us'? (Matthew 1:23)

Answer: Immanuel

Immanuel means 'God with us', according to Matthew 1:23. The passage claims Christ's birth fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah 7:14. According to Isaiah, Immanuel would be born of a virgin, with many Christians believing this is direct reference to the Virgin Mary giving birth to Jesus.

Isaiah 7:14, in the NKJV: states: "Therefore the LORD Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel."

Immanuel is also spelled as Emmanuel in some versions of the Bible. The name Immanuel can be found only in Isaiah in the Old Testament and Matthew in the New Testament.
6. What was the name of the man who converted the Ethiopian eunuch to Christianity? (Acts 8:26-40)

Answer: Philip

Philip was responsible for converting the Ethiopian eunuch, the first believer in Africa in a resurrected Jesus Christ. The conversion of the eunuch is found in Acts 8:26-40. Some trivia about the eunuch. Acts 8:27 describes him as an "important official" as he was in charge of the treasury for Candace, queen of the Ethiopians. Philip is referred to as Philip the evangelist in Acts 21:8.

When making reference to him, many people today call him Philip the evangelist to avoid any confusion with Philip, one of the original twelve disciples.
7. What was the name of the woman who ruthlessly taunted Hannah for being unable to bear children? (1 Samuel 1:4-7)

Answer: Peninnah

Peninnah and Hannah were both married to Elkanah and, according to Scripture, the two didn't get along. In fact, it seems Peninnah, who was the mother of children, took tremendous delight in taunting Hannah who was barren. 1 Samuel 1:6-7 tells of Peninnah continually provoking Hannah simply to irritate her. Peninnah's efforts were not in vain as Scripture states Hannah wept and lost her appetite for eating.

The chapter goes on to tell about Hannah fervently praying to the LORD and eventually giving birth to Samuel.
8. According to 2 Samuel 6:3-11, who was struck down for touching the Ark of God?

Answer: Uzzah

Scripture states David was overcome with grief, and anger, when Uzzah was struck dead by the LORD. Uzzah was struck dead when he reached out to steady the sacred Ark of God that was being pulled by oxen. Details about Uzzah's death can be found in 2 Samuel 6:5-10.

The passage states David opted not to move the ark of God to the City of David, putting it "aside" into the house of Obed-Edom. Scripture goes on to tell of the LORD blessing the house of Obed-Edom and David going back to get the Ark of God with "gladness".
9. Out of the four names below, which one was the oldest son of Noah? (Genesis 5:33)

Answer: Shem

According to Scripture, Shem was one of three sons of Noah and his unnamed wife. In addition to Shem, the two other sons were Ham and Japheth, with Shem being the oldest, as per Genesis 5:33.

Scripture states Noah and his wife and their three sons and their unnamed wives took refuge in a gigantic ark and were saved when floodwaters engulfed the world. Details about the flood can be found in Genesis 7 and 8.
10. Now take the first letter from each answer to come up with the nine-letter name of the man who is BELIEVED to be the son of Philemon.

Answer: Archippus

While there is no smoking gun, many theologians believe Archippus was the son of Philemon. In his letter to Philemon, Paul begins by writing "To Philemon, our beloved friend and fellow laborer, to the beloved Apphia, Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church in your house." This has led many people to conclude Apphia was Philemon's wife and Archippus was their son.

In his letter, Paul goes to bat for Onesimus, a slave who had run away from Philemon. After Onesimus ran away from Philemon, who lived in Colosse (which is in present day Turkey), Paul ended up meeting the slave in Rome, and converted him to Christianity. In his letter, Paul makes a passionate appeal to Onesimus' master to accept him back, not as a slave, but as an equal in Christ.
