Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Complete the missing word in the following verse from Romans 6:23 in the KJV, NKJV and the NIV: "For the _________ of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Answer: Wages

The missing word from Romans 6:23 in the KJV, NKJV and NIV is 'wages'. The verse is a classic among many Christians. Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, is credited with writing thirteen books in the New Testament and in the order the books appear, Romans is the first.
2. Out of the four names below, which one is the second woman named in Scripture after Eve? (Genesis 4:19)

Answer: Adah

With the exception of Eve, Adah is the first female mentioned by name in the Old Testament. Her name appears in Genesis 4:19, just before the name of another woman, Zillah. The two women were both married to Lamech and Adah was the mother of Jabal, described in Scripture as "the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock."

There is another woman in the Bible with the name Adah. According to Scripture, the other Adah was the daughter of Elon and the wife of Esau.
3. One of David's wives was Abigail, a woman who was originally married to a man who is described as "harsh and evil" in the NKJV Bible. What was the man's name, as per 1 Samuel 25:3?

Answer: Nabal

According to 1 Samuel 25:3, Abigail was originally married to Nabal, a man described as "harsh and evil" in the NKJV and "surly and mean" in the NIV. What's more, Abigail in 1 Samuel 25:25, states Nabal was a "scoundrel" and in the NIV his name meant "fool". He might have been a highly unpopular person, but he certainly had his comeuppance. After being rude and obnoxious with David's men, Nabal was struck dead by the LORD, as per 1 Samuel 25:38. Shortly after Nabal's death, Abigail became David's wife. The same chapter states David also married Ahinoam of Jezreel.
4. Mark 7:31-37 tells of Jesus miraculously healing a deaf man with a speech impediment. According to Scripture, Jesus put His fingers in the man's ears and spat and touched his tongue; after He said "be opened", the man was healed. In what community/area did the miracle take place?

Answer: Decapolis

Decapolis is the correct answer. The name means 'ten cities' in Greek and according to the website Christiananswers.net the district was east and southeast of the Sea of Galilee, and was largely inhabited by Greeks.

According to Scripture, Jesus entered Decapolis after visiting the region of Tyre and Sidon.

For the account of Jesus healing the unnamed deaf man with a speech impediment, see Mark 7:32-35.
5. What woman in the Old Testament was originally called Hadassah?

Answer: Esther

Esther's original name was Hadassah and she was raised by her cousin Mordecai, as per Esther 2:7. The verse states Esther's parents died, but no details are given as to the cause of their deaths. Hadassah was her Hebrew name, but after she became part of the harem of the king of Persia, she became known as Esther.

Esther, of course, would go on to become queen and play a pivotal role in derailing a diabolical scheme by Haman to exterminate the Jewish population in the vast area ruled by the man who is known as King Ahasuerus in the NKJV and King Xerxes in the NIV.
6. Out of the four women's names below from the book of Genesis, which one is best known for conniving?

Answer: Rebekah

Rebekah was the queen when it came to women in Genesis who were connivers. After all, it was largely due to her efforts that Jacob fraudulently obtained the blessing from Isaac, beating out Esau. Scripture states Jacob was a favorite of Rebekah while Esau was a favorite of Isaac.

Jacob disguised himself as Esau with the help of Rebekah to pull off the ruse on Isaac who was elderly and frail and his eyes "were so dim that he could not see." The ruse is recounted in Genesis 27:1-40.

Scripture reports Isaac requested Esau to hunt game for him and make some "savory food" and when he returned he would bless his son. Rebekkah overheard the conversation and swung into action.

Genesis 27:15-17 tells of Rebekah having Jacob dress in Esau's clothes and put skins of the kids of the goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck. Then she gave Jacob some savory food and bread, which she had prepared, to serve to Jacob.

Jacob in turn went to his father and impersonated Esau. He was so effective at his impersonation he was able to deceive Isaac and receive Esau's blessing. (The goat skins also created the impression he was a hairy man like his brother Esau.)

Later, Jacob would flee for his life as Esau was going to kill him, as per Genesis 27:41-46.

Once again, Rebekah interceded and foiled Esau's plans by telling Jacob to flee to her brother's house in Haran in Padan Aram, also known as Mesopotamia. It was there that Jacob married Leah and Rachel, the daughters of Laban.
7. According to Genesis 15:2, Abraham had a servant who came from Damascus. What was the servant's name?

Answer: Eliezer

Eliezer came from Damascus, as per Genesis 15:2. However, little is
known about him as he is mentioned in passing reference. Many theologians believe Eliezer was the unnamed senior servant who found a wife for Isaac. In Genesis 24, the unnamed servant is requested by Abraham to go to the land of his relatives to get a wife for his son. The servant's expedition ended with the selection of Rebekah as Isaac's wife.
8. What was the name of the city Paul went to when he was to go on trial before Caesar?

Answer: Rome

Rome, of course, is the correct answer. The 27th and 28th chapters of Acts tell of Paul's eventful trip to Rome. The trip was marked with a shipwreck off the coast of Malta. There is no report in Scripture about how Paul fared when he appeared before Caesar. It is believed his appearance before the Roman strongman had not taken place when Luke wrote the book of Acts.
9. According to Ruth 4:21, who was the father of Boaz, the husband of Ruth?

Answer: Salmon

Salmon was the father of Boaz who ended up marrying Ruth when she was a widow. Not much is known about Salmon, apart from the fact his father was Nahshon, as per Ruth 4:20-21. However, his name is part of the genealogy of Christ, appearing in Matthew 1:4-5 and Luke 3:32.

According to notes in the NKJV Study Bible, Salmon is also known as Salmah in Hebrew.
10. Now take the first letter of each answer to come up with a nine-letter word that describes the Israelites during a forty-year period.

Answer: Wanderers

The Israelites were wanderers for forty years as they made their way from Egypt to Canaan, known as the Promised Land. Scripture tells of them being led out of Egypt by Moses who was assisted by his brother and sister Aaron and Miriam.

The exploits of the Israelites as they wandered in the wilderness are documented in Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.
