Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Peter was definitely the most dynamic of the disciples, with his name appearing in the New Testament 96 times. (Only Jesus' name is mentioned more often.) It's as if Peter was the shop foreman of the disciples and many of the others were workers behind the scenes. How many times does his brother Andrew's name appear in the New Testament?

Answer: 14

Although Andrew's name is mentioned only 14 times, he did play a significant role when Scripture is carefully studied. And church history indicates he was a tireless and fearless evangelist after the resurrection of Christ.
2. In Matthew 4:18, we are told the occupation of Andrew. What was it?

Answer: Fisherman

Similar to his brother Peter, Andrew was a fisherman, as documented in Matthew 4:18. In verse 19, Jesus tells Peter and Andrew to follow him, and that he would make them fishers of men.
3. John 1:44 tells us the name of the town Andrew came from. What is its name?

Answer: Bethsaida

In addition to coming from Bethsaida, Andrew was a Jew with a Greek name. The only other disciple to have a Greek name was Philip, who also came from Bethsaida.
4. Prior to becoming a disciple for Jesus, Andrew served as a disciple for a man who is known by some Christians as the 'last of the Old Testament prophets'. (John 1:40) Can you name him?

Answer: John the Baptist

Details about John the Baptist appear in Matthew 3:1-17, Luke 3:1-20, and John 1:19-34. He preached a message of repentance and told the people he had been sent to prepare the way for the long-promised Messiah. He had harsh words for the church leaders of the day (the Sadducees and the Pharisees), calling them "a brood of vipers." John also baptized Jesus in the Jordan River.
5. John 1:41-42 reports about Andrew meeting with Jesus. It also reports that the "first thing" Andrew did after the meeting was tell someone he had met the Messiah. Who was the person Andrew told right away?

Answer: Peter

Andrew simply couldn't contain his excitement. He had to tell his brother Peter as soon as possible. If Andrew were taking part in such a meeting in today's world, he would be on his cell phone right away, telling Peter the news.
6. Mark 13:3-4 tells of Jesus sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple with Andrew and three other disciples, when He told of the destruction of the temple and other buildings. When asked about the date the destruction will take place, Jesus responded by giving a lengthy statement about the signs of the end of the age. Who were the three other disciples?

Answer: Peter, James and John

On this occasion, Andrew was part of the inner circle. However, he was not present during the Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1), or when Jesus healed Jairus' daughter (Luke 8:51), or when Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane prior to his arrest and crucifixion (Matthew 26:37). In all these events, Peter, James and John were in attendance.
7. In John 6:5-9, we read that Andrew led a little boy with five fish and two loaves of bread to Christ to feed the large crowd. How many men were fed?

Answer: 5,000

Scripture reports there were 5,000 men fed, but it was the custom of the day not to include women and children in such reports. As a result, theologians estimate that 15,000 people were fed with the tiny bit of food from the little boy who was led to Christ by Andrew. In other words, Andrew played an important role in this Bible story, which is a favourite of millions of people today.
8. In John 12:20-22, we read that Andrew, along with Philip, introduced some Gentiles to Jesus. What nationality were these Gentiles?

Answer: Greeks

Incidentally, the Greek delegation went to Philip first to arrange a meeting with Jesus. As stated in a previous clue, Philip is a Greek name and some theologians believe he may have been able to speak the language. Nevertheless, Philip saw that the best way to handle things is to get help from Andrew, perhaps because he knew Andrew was warm and friendly and would do his part to make the Greeks feel at home. One wag suggests that, as a result of Andrew leading the Greeks to Jesus, he earned himself a reputation as the first foreign missionary.
9. Acts 1:12-26 tells about Andrew being in the upper room with the other disciples as well as a number of women, Mary the mother of Jesus and the brothers of Christ, stating they were praying constantly. This Scripture also tells of the selection of a man to replace Judas Iscariot, who had committed suicide. Whom did they pick?

Answer: Matthias

Matthias was picked as the replacement for Judas, but there is no other documentation in the Bible about his actions. The suicide of Judas is reported in Matthew 27:5.
10. How does legend say Andrew died?

Answer: Crucified on an X-shaped cross

Legend has it that Andrew was crucified on an X-shaped cross, where he suffered unimaginable pain for 48 hours. He is the patron saint of Scotland and the Scottish flag features a white X (the cross of Andrew) on a blue background. The Cross of St. Andrew is also part of the Union Jack of the United Kingdom.
