Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where were the Israelites when they had their last encounter with Pharaoh?

Answer: Red Sea

After ten plagues sent by God, Pharoah finally consented to let the Israelites into the desert. A while later Pharoah changed his mind and decided to go get the Israelites and make them his slaves again. He set out for them with over 600 chariots. When they came upon the Israelites near the Red Sea, God told Moses to stretch his staff over the Red Sea.

When Moses did, the Red Sea split in two and the Israelites crossed on dry land. When they had crossed they saw the Egyptians following them so God told Moses to stretch his staff back over the Red Sea.

When he did the Red Sea came back together swallowing up the Egyptians (all but Pharoah) in the process. This can be found in Exodus 14.
2. In Exodus 19 the Israelites came to Mount Sinai. What's the name of the desert Mount Sinai was in?

Answer: The Desert of Sinai

Exodus 18 tells us that they came to the desert of Sinai three months after they left Egypt. They settled next to Mount Sinai and God descended on the mountain in a cloud. It was while they were there that they got the Ten Commandments. These ten commandments are listed in Exodus 20.
3. When the Israelites left Mount Sinai they went to a different desert but they made a couple stops on the way. Which one was the first one?

Answer: Taberah

When they left Mount Sinai they stopped. It was here that the Israelites complained that life was too hard for them. God was angered at this and he sent fire down to consume some of the Israelites. Then the Israelites asked Moses to pray for them so he did and the fire died down. They named this place Taberah which means burning. This can be found in Numbers 11:1-3.
4. What is the name of the desert the Israelites settled in after camping by Mount Sinai?

Answer: The Desert of Paran

Numbers 10:11 says that on the twentieth day on the second month of the second year after leaving Egypt the LORD ascended from Mount Sinai. He then led them to the desert of Paran.
5. From where did the Israelite spies first spy out the land of Canaan?

Answer: The Desert of Zin

They spies were sent out and they looked at the land from the Desert of Zin. All of the spies except for Caleb and Joshua brought back negative reports. Caleb back brought a positive report saying that they ought to go fight for it right then. Because of his faith, Caleb was one of only two of those spies allowed into the promised land. Joshua later replaced Moses as leader of the Israelites and he also entered into the promised land.

Joshua and Caleb were the only two men that left Egypt and later lived in the promised land. This can be found in Numbers 32:11-12. The spying out of the land can be found in Numbers 13.
6. After the Israelite spies brought back their report, in which desert did they settle in?

Answer: The Desert of Zin

The spies brought back their report and then, after a few other happenings, tore down camp and went on to settle in the Desert of Zin. It was while they were there that Moses struck the rock instead of speaking to it to draw water and so was forbidden to enter the promised land. This can be found in Numbers 20.
7. The Israelites settled next to Mount Hor. It was here that God told Moses to take a certain person up onto the mountain; that person died there. Who was that person?

Answer: Aaron

They settled next to Mount Hor and God told Moses to climb up the mountain and take Aaron and his son Eleazar. He did and God told him to take Aaron's priestly garments away from him and put them on his son Eleazar. He did and Aaron died while on the mountain. Eleazar succeeded him as high priest of Israel. This can be found in Numbers 20.
8. When Edom denied passage through their land, the Israelites decided to go around it. What body of water did they follow to get around it?

Answer: Red Sea

When they first settled in the Desert of Zin they asked multiple times to pass through Edom but the Edomite king said that if they tried, they would attack the Israelites. Because the Edomites wouldn't let them pass through, they settled by Mount Hor where Aaron died and Eleazar his son succeeded him as high priest.

Then, they left Mount Hor and passed around Edom by using the route to the Red Sea. While they were stopped on their way around Edom, the Israelites complained because they had no bread or water. God sent snakes into the camp and they bit some of the Israelites and some of those died.

Then God told Moses to set up a bronze snake so anyone who was bit could look at it and live. This can be found in Numbers 20-21.
9. After the Israelites went around Edom, they made a few stops before they settled in a valley in Moab. Then they asked the king of the Amorites to let them pass through his country. What was the name of that king?

Answer: Sihon

When they asked Sihon king of the Amorites if they could pass through, he denied passage and mustered up his army to attack them. They managed to defeat him and took his land as their own. After this the Israelites went up towards Bashan. But Og the king of Bashan went up to battle them.

But the LORD told them not to be afraid and they defeated the king and took his land as their own as well. This can be found in Numbers 21:21-35.
10. After this the Israelites came to the plains of Moab and settled near the Jordan River. What city was across the Jordan from them?

Answer: Jericho

They settled on the east side the Jordan River in the plains of Moab. Across the Jordan from them was the city of Jericho. It was while they were settled there that Balaam was told to go curse the Israelites. However, he stopped in his tracks when his donkey spoke to him. This can be found in Numbers 22.

Another thing that happened while they were settled there was that Moses climbed Mount Nebo and God let him see the promised land. Moses then died at the age of 120 years and God buried him on the mountain. He was replaced as leader of the Israelites by Joshua son of Nun. This can be found in Deuteronomy 34.
