Revisiting The Book of Exodus Trivia Quiz

This is my first attempt at a Bible related quiz. There are already several excellent quizzes devoted to the Book of Exodus, but I hope this one will be a welcome addition! All scripture referenced is from the King James Version.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these events is NOT depicted in the Book of Exodus?

Answer: Daniel in the lion's den

The story of Moses, from beginning to end, is one of the most compelling in all of the Bible. The name "Exodus" comes from the ancient Greek word "exodos" which means "going out". In modern times it is often used as a term for leaving, as in "There was a mass exodus from the building when the fire alarm sounded".

The story of Daniel in the lion's den can be found in the Book of Daniel, Chapter 6.
2. Numerically speaking, where does Exodus fall in the Old Testament?

Answer: second book

Genesis is the first book of the Old Testament, followed by Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. The first five books of the Bible are sometimes referred to as the Pentateuch. The Jewish religion refers to them as the Torah.
3. What sea was parted to allow the Israelites to escape Egypt?

Answer: The Red Sea

After suffering ten plagues inflicted by God, Pharoah agreed to let the Israelites go free, then instructed his soldiers to give chase, thereby reneging on his promise. Exodus Chapter 14, verses 21-31 describes how God parted the Red Sea to allow the Israelites to cross it, then returned it to its original state, causing Pharoah's army to drown.
4. According to the scripture, what food did God provide to the starving Israelites after their escape into the desert?

Answer: manna

Although manna is thought to have been an edible grain, the term "manna" is often used symbolically to represent any kind of tangible blessing from God. Some Biblical scholars believe the term "manna" is derived from the Aramaic phrase "man hu", meaning "What is it?". Exodus 16 verses 15-16 seems to define manna as being used to either replace or make bread, according to Moses.
5. What is the specific name of the land God promised to the Israelites?

Answer: Canaan

In Exodus 6:4 God promised the land of Canaan to the Israelites at Mount Sinai as a reward for their faithfulness and their acceptance of the Covenant. They were instructed to build a tabernacle and to obey His laws, given to them through the Ten Commandments and the Covenant.
6. How many chapters are in the book of Exodus?

Answer: 40

Many Biblical scholars believe the Book of Exodus to be a two part narrative with chapters 1-19 devoted to the birth of Moses, his growth into adulthood and the plight of the Israelites while in captivity. Chapters 20-40 depict the crossing of the Red Sea by the Israelites led by Moses, the drowning of Pharoah's army, and the subsequent covenant of the Israelites with God.
7. How did God first reveal himself to Moses?

Answer: As a burning bush

Exodus chapter 3 verses 2 and 3 describe how God spoke to Moses through the burning bush. He instructed Moses to confront Pharaoh and gain the release of the Israelites, warning the ruler of the plagues that would descend upon him should he refuse to release the slaves. Moses was reluctant to carry out God's instructions, pleading that he lacked the eloquence to speak confidently to the Pharaoh.

After rebuking Moses for questioning Him, God agreed to allow Moses' brother to accompany him.
8. Who was Moses' wife?

Answer: Zipporah

Zipporah is identified in Exodus 2:21. She was one of seven daughters of Reuel, the priest of Midian. In appreciation of Moses' help in giving his daughters and their flock water he "gave" Moses his daughter Zipporah.
9. In order to set him free, Moses' birth mother placed him in a small ark and sent him floating down the river. What was her name?

Answer: Jochebed

Per Exodus 6:20, Moses' birth mother was Jochebed. She constructed the ark out of bulrushes, hiding Moses from Pharaoh's army to protect him from Pharaoh's edict that ordered all Hebrew children to be killed to reduce the population. Pharaoh's daughter found the child and raised him as her own.
10. Who was Moses' brother?

Answer: Aaron

Aaron was Moses' brother. Their sister was Miriam. Their parents were Jochebed and Amram. Seth was the third son of Adam and Eve. David was a major Biblical figure who first appeared in the first Book of Samuel.
