Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the only daughter of Jacob, as per Genesis 30:21?

Answer: Dinah

Dinah is the correct answer. She was the daughter of Jacob and Leah. According to Genesis 34, Dinah was defiled by Shechem, prompting her brothers Simeon and Levi to go on a ruthless vigilante killing spree. There is no record in Scripture of Dinah ever marrying and having children.

Jacob was also the father of twelve boys. In addition to Leah, the mothers of Jacob's sons were Rachel, Bilhah and Zilpah.
2. According to Ruth 1:2, who was the son of Elimelech and Naomi and the husband of Orpah? (The NIV has a slightly different spelling that does not begin with the letters 'A', 'B', 'C' or 'D'.)

Answer: Chilion

Chilion was the son of Elimelech and Naomi and the husband of Orpah, according to Scripture. (In the NIV, Chilion's name appears as Kilion.) In addition to Chilion, Elimelech and Naomi were also the parents of Mahlon, who was married to Ruth.

According to Ruth 1:3-5, Elimelech, Chilion and Maholon died, leaving their wives as widows. No details are given about the cause of the deaths of the three men.

It must be pointed out that nowhere in Scripture does it specifically say Chilion was married to Orpah. However, Ruth 4:10 states Ruth was married to Mahlon, making it obvious who Chilion was married to.
3. What new name did the king of Babylon give Daniel the prophet? (Daniel 1:7)

Answer: Belteshazzar

According to Scripture, Belteshazzar was the name given to Daniel the prophet by Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon. Daniel's three friends also got new names: Hananiah was called Shadrach, Mishael was called Meshach and Azariah was called Abednego. See the first chapter of Daniel for details.
4. In Psalm 106:16 in the KJV and the NKJV, what man is described as a saint? (The NIV uses different wording.)

Answer: Aaron

I suspect this one may have stumped a number of quiz players as, at first blush, David would appear to be the obvious choice. However, in Psalm 106:16, in the KJV and the NKJV, Aaron, the brother of Moses, is called a saint. (The NIV uses different wording, saying Aaron "was consecrated to the LORD."). The verse is part of a passage telling of the Israelites in the wilderness during their exodus out of Egypt to Canaan, known as the Promised Land.

Moses and Aaron formed a dynamic duo and Scripture reports they were used by the LORD to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. After ten vicious plagues -- everything from the Nile River turning into blood to the deaths of the country's firstborn -- the brothers finally received the Pharaoh's permission to leave Egypt and to head to Canaan.
5. What member of the early church, according to 3 John 1:9, loved to have "preeminence" and would not receive John?

Answer: Diotrephes

In 3 John 1:9, Diotrephes is described as a man who loved to have "preeminence" at his church and refused to receive the writer of the epistle. The verse also states John had written a letter to the church attended by Diotrephes, but the letter received no action.

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible suggest Diotrephes was asserting control over the church and wanted nothing to do with John. It is not stated in the epistle where Diotrephes was based, but it is commonly believed he was somewhere in Asia Minor, now known as Turkey.

Tradition holds the writer of 3 John was John, one of the Twelve Disciples.
6. Out of the four names below, which one is credited with being the author of Psalm 50, as well as Psalms 73 to 83?

Answer: Asaph

Asaph, a Levite choir leader under David and Solomon, is the correct answer. (See 1 Chronicles 15:16-19, 16:1-7 and 2 Chronicles 5:6, 12.) In 2 Chronicles 29:30, Asaph is also described as a "seer". His name appears as the author of Psalm 50 as well as Psalms 73 to 83. In other words, Asaph is credited with writing twelve Psalms.
7. Out of the four names below, which one was converted to Christianity in Athens by Paul? (Acts 17:34)

Answer: Dionysius

According to Acts 17:34, Dionysius became a believer in a resurrected Jesus Christ when Paul gave a passionate message in Athens. Not much is known about Dionysius, as the one verse in which he appears simply states he was an Areopagite. The same verse tells of the conversion of a woman named Damaris and "others".

After preaching in Athens, Paul departed to Corinth, as per Acts 18:1.
8. Out of the four names below, which one was a son of Ham and was cursed by his grandfather Noah? (Genesis 10:6)

Answer: Canaan

Canaan, was the son of Ham and grandson of Noah. According to Genesis 9:20-25, Canaan ended up being cursed by Noah. Scripture states Noah issued the curse after Ham saw him drunk and naked in a tent and went and told other members of the family about Noah's condition. Scripture goes on to tell of Ham's two brothers, Shem and Japheth, taking a garment, and going backwards into their father's tent and covering his nakedness. Because their faces were turned away, they did not see their father's nakedness.

Genesis 9:24-25 tells of Noah awaking from his sleep, and knowing what Ham had done to him, announcing: "Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants he shall be to his brethren."

Canaan, of course, is also the name of the land in which the Israelites would eventually take up residency.
9. Out of the four names below, which one was a personal aide to Herod? (Acts 12:20)

Answer: Blastus

Acts 12:20 states Blastus was a personal aide to Herod. (In the NIV it states he was a "trusted personal servant of the king.") Scripture goes on to state Blastus was befriended by the people to Tyre and Sidon, and they were successful in having a personal audience with Herod. The meeting, however, would be Herod's downfall.

While Herod was speaking, people kept shouting "the voice of a god, not of a man!", according to Acts 12:22. Scripture goes on to tell of an angel "immediately" striking Herod because he did not give glory to God and then he was "eaten by worms and died."

This is the only mention of Blastus in Scripture.
10. Who was the husband of Priscilla, a dynamic member of the early church? (Romans 16:3)

Answer: Aquila

Aquila is the correct answer. According to Acts 18:2-3, Aquila was ordered to leave Italy by Claudius because he was Jewish. Scripture goes on to tell of Aquila and his wife Priscilla meeting up with the apostle Paul in Corinth. The trio had much in common. In addition to believing in a resurrected Jesus, Aquila, Priscilla and Paul were all tentmakers.

The married couple became key members in the early church, and in Romans 16:3 Paul writes they "risked their necks" for him, but does not provide details.
